Details of Disappearance

Shanta's adoptive mother, Susan M. Johnson, says she and Shanta visited Briarcliffe Mall in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on July 19, 1992. Susan told authorities that Shanta disappeared near the toy department of the K-Mart store inside the shopping center at approximately 3:30 p.m.
The K-Mart surveillance tapes showed Susan entering the store alone, which is inconsistent with her version of events. However, Susan has not been charged or publicly named as a suspect in her daughter's disappearance. Shanta's biological mother was in prison on a drug charge in 1992; she was interviewed by police but had no useful information. The child's case remains unsolved.

Susan and Shanta resided in Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1992.

Disappearance of girl in 1992 still unresolved

It's been 10 years since Shanta Marie Johnson was reported missing from a Kmart department store near North Myrtle Beach.

Today she would be 13 years old, but the trail in her search is cold, police said.

"Once they get cold it's really difficult to do anything with the case," said Lt. Sam Pennica with the Columbus County (N.C.) Sheriff's Department.

Columbus County officials took over the investigation into Shanta's disappearance after Horry County officials ran out of leads.

The truth about Shanta's disappearance could remain a mystery forever unless someone comes forward with information about being involved or knows who was, Pennica said.

On July 19, 1992, Shanta's adoptive mother, Susan Johnson, told police the girl walked away from her inside the now-defunct Kmart in what is now Colonial Mall. Johnson and her adopted daughter, formerly Shanta Reid, were visiting from Cumberland County, N.C.

A review of store surveillance tapes showed that Johnson entered the store alone, investigators said.

No charges were ever filed in Shanta's disappearance, Pennica said. However, officials continue to offer a reward in the case.

If Shanta Marie Johnson is still alive, she would have turned 22 this year. On July 19, 1992 she was just three-years-old. That was the last day that Shanta was ever seen. According to reports she and her adoptive mother went to the Briarcliffe Mall (now Myrtle Beach Mall) and were in K-Mart when Shanta disappeared near the toy section. Police reviewed the surveillance tapes and Shanta was not seen on the surveillance footage. Shanta's adoptive mother is on the videos, and she is seen entering K-Mart alone. Shanta tested positive for cocaine at birth and she was identified as a special needs child. Her biological mother was in prison at the time for drug charges. Her biological family was having a family reunion in Myrtle Beach at the time of her disappearence but they were all ruled out as suspects. Three years after Shanta went missing her adoptive mother was charged with child abuse. A nurse at Duke University Medical Center filed a police report stating that she believed that Shanta was being abused because of fearful behavior and injuries consistent with abuse. Shanta's babysitter reported Shanta having severe burns on her buttocks. Shanta told her babysitter that her adoptive mother was burning her with hot grease. Police believed that her adoptive mother was the prime suspect in a homicide. But to date her case remains open and unsolved.
