Also llisted on Doe Network...2528dfal....List her as lost, injured, missing. Wonder what the story is on this case. Usually what they say if suspect parent has taken child. Doesn't say non family abduction... The number is high which means it was recently put in...Seems like maybe family members have come forward saying they haven't seen her in all these years??

Victim's daughter is missing

Charlotte, N.C. (AP) - The FBI says that the three-year-old daughter of a woman found dead on a mountainside still is missing.

The two, Mrs. Janet Gail Carter, 24, of Hueytown, Ala., the former Janet Calhoun of Winston-Salem, N.C., and her daughter Christina had been reported missing in September.

Mrs. Carter's body was found Oct. 7 on Clingman's Dome in the Smoky Mountains National Park, but it was not identified until last Monday. The state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill did so through dental charts.

The state FBI office in Charlotte said she and Lindsay Carter of Hueytown were divorced about two months ago. It quoted him as saying his daughter is not with relatives, and he fears she also is dead.

Where Is Christina Carter?

GATLINBURG (UPI) -
Where is three-year-old Christina Lynn Carter?

That's the question that disturbs the Federal Bureau of Investigation today in their efforts to solve the murder of the child's mother, Janet Gail Carter
whose nude body was found Oct. 7. in a duffel bag thrown at the side of Clingman's Dome Road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Was the child murdered also? Or had the mother left the blue-eyed lively little blonde with someone for safekeeping?

"The last time we can place both the mother and and daughter together was Sept. 17 in Hueytown, Ala.," said Wallace F. Estill, special agent in charge of the Knoxville FBI office.

At 24, Janet Gail Carter was beset with problems. Her marriage had failed. Her estranged husband was trying to gain custody of their daughter. She saw no way out but to run and hide. And she hid her movements so well that the FBI faced unusual problems Tuesday in trying to find her killer and her missing child.

She had been working in the Birmingham area for an insurance company until shortly before her disappearance. A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., she went into hiding Sept. 17, taking her daughter with her in order to avoid losing the child in the custody battle.

"We haven't been able to find out where she went, and that's our major
problem right now," Estill said Tuesday.

The FBI is looking for someone who might have seen the woman and child
together after Sept. 17.

The case is complicated by the fact that it was almost a month before Janet Carter was identified by North Carolina authorities, through dental charts and x-rays. And that was a month during which little Christina Carter was out of the picture entirely so far as the investigation was concerned.

Since the woman was identified, there has been an intensive search of the area in the great Smoky Mountains National Park where the body was found. But it's rugged country, heavily forested and tangled with thick underbrush.

"We believe the woman was alive and in the park during the early morning
hours of Oct. 7," Estill said. But sometime during those early hours of that Sunday morning she was murdered.

"We're hoping she left the child in the custody of someone," Estill said. "We have exhausted all our sources. Our main consideration at this point is to find the little girl. All our efforts have failed. We are asking anyone who can help."

Woman's body identified

Knoxville (UPI) - The nude body of a young woman, found in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Oct. 7, was identified Monday as that of Janet Gail Carter, 24, of Hueytown, Ala.

Wallace Estill, special agent in charge of the FBI office here, said the identification was made by North Carolina's chief medical officer on the basis of dental charts and X-rays.

The agent reported that the woman had been missing since September. He said he did not know the names of any relatives.

He said the victim is the former Janet Calhoun, who was born in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Mrs. Carter's body was found in a duffel bag beside Clingman's Dome on the North Carolina-Tennessee border.

Hueytown woman's body discovered

Charlotte, N.C. (AP) - A woman's body found on Clingman's Dome in the Smoky Mountains National Park has been identified as a Winston-Salem native who had lived recently in Hueytown, Ala.

Edward J. Krupinsky, special agent in charge of the Charlotte FBI office, said Monday the chief medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill had identified the woman as Janet Gail Carter, 24.

Medical examiners said the woman apparently had been suffocated. The body was found Oct. 7 off a road near the top of the peak.

The FBI said the woman, born Janet Calhoun in Winston-Salem, had married in Hueytown in 1970. She had lived there recently and had been reported missing the latter part of September, the FBI said.

The FBI, which entered the investigation because the body was found on federal property, said identification was established by dental charts and X-rays.

From RootsWeb:

Janet, along with her daughter Christina, were abducted during the spring of 1973 just before Chris" third birthday. Janet's body was found in a tow-sack on the side of the road in the Smokey Mountains in TN on October 7, 1973. She had packed her bags and left her husband and was never seen alive again. Her boy friend, who was a policeman in Hueytown, Al, was suspected to be involved, but nothing was ever proven. There was also speculation that she was "going home" to her mother in NC and was abducted in the way. Chris" body could have been dumped in a differen palce, although there was also speclation she may have been sold on the black market for adoption or child prostitution. As of this writing { on Dec, 199 } the mystery is still unsolved. Neither the daughter or her body have been found.
