Oroville Teen Missing 36 Years, News10 Report, 12/14/07

Michael Duane Burnett 14 years old in 1971

He was last seen leaving his house on his way to school 36 years ago. Michael Burnett's family and investigators still want to know what became of the 14-year-old.

Burnett disappeared on March 17, 1971 from Oroville. It's a missing person case that Butte County Sheriff's Detective Dan Angel says he'd like to solve more than any other.

"It doesn't make any sense," said Angel. "He came from a good family. He had no reason to run away."

Michael, who was also called Mike, left his house on Claremont Drive to walk to school. He apparently never arrived. Angel says there were no problems in his home life that would have caused him to run away. It is believed, however, he was attacked by boys from another school a few days before his disappearance.

"His disappearance devastated my mother," said Burnett's older sister Kathleen Greenman. Greenman was married and living in her own home when Michael went missing. "Unfortunately police just didn't take cases like this very seriously back then," she said. "They originally thought he ran away."

Greenman said her mother searched and searched for Michael, but died never knowing what happened to him. "I wish she and my dad would have had some closure," she said.

Greenman is hoping the renewed interest in the case will give her, and her three sisters some answers. "The hardest part is not knowing," she said. "It's really hard if you lose someone and they die but you know, but if they're just missing for (36) years you don't know, it's hard."

At the time Burnett went missing, he was 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighed 160 pounds. He had black hair and brown eyes. There was a small scar by his right eye and a scar on the left side of his chest from lung surgery as a young child.

Angel says the sheriff's Missing Person Unit has exhausted all resources trying to find Burnett and three friends who may be able to shed some light on his disappearance. The detective would like to locate Burnett's long-ago friends Carl Laney, Ricky Brown and Mitch Brown. The latter two may not be related. With the common last names and without dates of birth, Angel says inquiries for information about the friends turn up huge databases that have been difficult to narrow.

Burnett, who was born on May 21, 1956, would be 51 years old if he is alive today.

Greenman said she appreciates the detective's passion on this case. "Even if Michael is dead we'd like to know so we can have some kind of memorial."

Anyone with information about Burnett or his friends is asked to call the Angel at (530) 538-7933.

OROVILLE -- The Butte County Sheriff's Office is looking into the disappearance 36 years ago of Michael Duane Burnett, then of Oroville.

Burnett was 14 when he went missing in 1971 without an obvious reason, and the Sheriff's Office is looking for new clues to his disappearance.

"We're just trying to shake the tree and see if anyone out there knows anything at all about him," said detective Dan Angel.

The Sheriff's Missing Person Unit is asking the public to help provide information about Burnett and circumstances related to his disappearance.

They are also trying to locate three of his friends and schoolmates who might have information about his disappearance: Carl Laney, Ricky Brown and Mitch Brown.

Born May 21, 1956, Burnett was 14 at the time he disappeared and would be 51 years old now.

On the morning of March 17, 1971, he left his house on Claremont Drive in Oroville to walk to school. He was not seen or heard from since. According to a release from the Sheriff's Office, he had no problems at home that would prompt him to run away.

"The case just doesn't make sense," Angel said.

However, Burnett appeared to have been assaulted by boys from another school a few days prior to his disappearance.

At the time of Burnett's disappearance, he was 5-foot-9, 160 pounds and had black hair and brown eyes. He had a small scar near his right eye and had part of his left lung removed as a small child. He would have had a scar on the left side of his chest.

Burnett was left handed.

Angel said there is very little information about Burnett's disappearance in 1971. He said missing persons cases are never closed; they remain open until solved.

Burnett was 14 when he went missing in 1971, without an obvious reason, and the Butte County Sheriff's Office is looking for new clues to his disappearance.

The investigation has noted that Ricky Brown and Mitch Brown might not have been related.

Born May 21, 1956, Burnett was 14 at the time he disappeared and would be 51 years old now. On the morning of March 17, 1971, he left his house on Claremont Drive in Oroville to walk to school. had a small scar near his right eye and had part of his left lung removed as a small child. He would have had a scar on the left side of his chest. Burnett was also left handed.
Angel heads the missing person department at the Sheriff's Office. He said they have very little information about Burnett's disappearance from 1971.

Also they did not have the advantages of computers and data bases in 1971, so the missing person's unit has put information about Burnett into the system.

Angel said missing persons cases are never closed, they remain open until solved. The missing persons unit wants to try to get new information on the case or to get some closure.

Call Detective Dan Angel at (530)-538-7933 if you have any information about the 1971 disappearance of Michael Duane Burnett or his friends.
