Title: Will,School and Games
CoffeeFreak4Life - May 5, 2005 07:10 PM (GMT)
There was a topic on the sims 2 site about how sims should have inteligence and one of the things proposed was that they lose it when they play games . Well me being a sensible man knew you dont and you actualy gain it from some so I said my piece . Today I got to thinking about games that do and all of Will Wrights came in my head making me wonder if it was intentional. and I'm starting to think it is . 2 good examples of course being Sim City and Spore one dealing with city and budget management and the other with evolution . Then you have The Sims which deals with numerus aspects of socal interaction and working hard to get better at your job and on top of that you have architectual design. Now of course not many would think about these things but im thinking that Will did and thats a reason he made them the way he did. What is your opinion?
P.S I wasent exactly sure where this fit so sorry if its in the wrong place.

This forum seems suitable, Coffee, don't worry. :D
Anyways:
Yeah, you DO bring up a good point. Many of Will Wright's game offer fun, addiction, and actual LEARNING. Sure, games like Half-Life 2 are VERY popular and feature more realistic graphics and such, but no games outside of the Maxis realm really delves into the intelligence factor of games. All of them have a goal you "must" accomplish (while still be open-eneded) and giving you a fun side to it.

Yeah I agree with both of you. You don't see Will going out there making a useless "shoot-em up" game where you learn nothing from. Sim City really taught things about budget well....and this evolution thing (while not a good thing with very strict religious parents) will probably end up teaching alot about evolution.

Yep -- I would leave the dinosaurs alone. They think we are crunchy and taste good with ketchup. Thanks for the laugh.

You know, I recently read an article about video games and it suggested that video games could actually be good for you! And I'd have to agree that the Sim line of games as well as other Maxis works are one of the most intelligent of the gaming industry but this article stated that the use of hand and eye coordination could be good for people and that other aspects of otherwise shoot-em-up games such as implementing a strategy can also be good for you as well. It was interesting to read.
A Discovery Magazine, I think.

Spore may teach a bit about evolution, but evolution in spore uses a totaly different mechanism than real world evolution. In spore, the user modifies the creature any way they want, even if it is not beneficial to the creature. In the real world, DNA is mutated, and the mutations that allow the creature to reproduce more easily/or that allow it to survive to reproductive age, are passed along to the next generation. Natural Selection.
