Title: Waiting in line for spore

guru42 - February 16, 2007 03:59 AM (GMT)
Today was my first day waiting in line for spore. I set up my tent in front of the local Best Buy, and after talking with the managers for 15 minutes, they agreed to let me stay there. I convinced them that I was good marketing for their store and the game. I promised to keep my tent clean, and the area around it clean too. It's kinda cold here, so I needed a very think sleeping bag and lots of warm clothes. I of course also needed my laptop so I could play the game when it comes out. I'm able to post these daily musings from the spore line with the Starbucks wifi from next door.

About the day: The day was pretty calm. It snowed a bit, and I helped the guy's shovel out in front of the store. The sun decided to peek out around noon. While i was at starbucks for lunch, some guys from the geek squad came in and we had a nice little chat about HD-DVD vs. BLU RAY. They weren't sure which would win the race, but had their money on HD-DVD. They went into a whole list of reasons why but it was too technical for me to catch what they were saying. The store wasn't too busy today, so not too much noise outside my tent. I was able to read a few chapters of Artemis Fowl before typing up this post.
That's about it for today! The tent is starting to get cold so i want to get warm in my sleeping bag. See you all tomorow!

Mr Cheese - February 17, 2007 03:56 AM (GMT)
I must say, I don't really see the point of living in a tent next to a store until Spore comes out. Unless of course you don't have a house. But if you have no house then you probably won't have a computer, or the funds to buy Spore. Please elaborate, guru42

guru42 - February 17, 2007 04:25 AM (GMT)
Today was my second day waiting in line for Spore. I guess you could say im dedicated. I set my iPod to go off at 6 in the morning so i could watch the store open. It wasn't quite as exciting as i had expected. The lights came on, the employees walked in. I didn't know what to do for the morning, so I sat outsite my tent and browsed spore sites. I actually made a couple dollars from people who walked by. I don't know what kind of homeless people these people are used to seeing, but I've never seen a homeless person toting around a dell XPS. I shouldn't be complaining though, those dollars are going into my spore fund so i can buy the game when it comes out.

There seems to be some confusion, so let me explain why I'm doing this. I've recently graduated from high school, and I was taking a year off to work before going to college. I didn't need the money or anything. My grandmother has had my whole college situation settled since I was born, at least when it came to paying for it. I just wanted the experience of working instead of going to school all the time. My employer was very lenient, and I explained to him that I wanted to take some time off to do some camping, and see how long I could wait for the game to come out. That might seem like a stupid reason to leave, but the job also sucked, so this is actually a welcome change. I always liked camping when I was a kid.

Maybe that wasn't a satisfactory explaination, but I think in time my whole story will come out.

Back to my day. After lunch I made a sign to put on my tent welcoming people to join me in the line. The sign is made on canvas with old oil paint that was lying around in the back of the Best Buy that they were looking to get rid of. The sign reads "I am waiting in line for Spore, you can wait with me if you want." Boring, I know, but it's what the sign says. I've had a few short chats with random people, and I seem to have gotten at least one person interested in the game. After talking with a 14 year old for about 10 minutes, he said he would look at the game online when he got home. I gave him the address of this forum as a place he could visit. Who know's if he'll show up here or not.

Well, that's all for today. I need to go to starbucks to recharge my laptop and iPod, so I'll see you all tomorow!

SporeFox - February 17, 2007 02:26 PM (GMT)
m00t! still, the earliest you should start waiting is one month before the release...and that's still deticated..

Day Three waiting in line for Spore.

Today I woke up with a slight headache. I figured that it was because I was dehydrated, so I went over to the starbucks for some juice. The juice seemed to help for a bit, but as the day wore on the headache got worse. I was laying in my tent most of the morning contemplating giving up on waiting in line for spore. I was in alot of pain, and I was thinking that it might not be worth it. About noon, I got out of the tent and went to the starbucks again. One of the people there offered me some asprin, and that seemed to help. I took one and went back to my tent to lay down. I fell asleep, and the next thing I knew I was being woken up by someone shaking my tent. I got out and a man immediately started yelling at me about how my tent was blocking the way for his RV. I looked, and he had the largest RV I had ever seen. We argued about it for over 15 minutes, until the manager of Best Buy came out. He said that he had seen us arguing and would take over from there. My headache was back stronger than ever, so I went to lie down again. I fell asleep and woke up around 6. I don't know why I woke up, but I just happened to look out my tent, and the man with the RV was still parked in the parking lot, quite far from my tent. It looked like he was intending to stay for quite awhile, as all of his stuff had been rearranged. I could see lights coming from what I assumed was a large TV in the RV. I chuckled to myself about how strange some people can be, then realised that I was camping in front of a store for months so I could be the first person in my town to own a video game. With that thought in mind, I end this day, the third day waiting in line for Spore.

Mr Cheese - February 18, 2007 10:51 AM (GMT)
This is by far the most interesting thread here. A day by day journal of a guy waiting outside a video game store for months. It's like some sort of reality tv show. Keep up the good work, man!

No offense, but i've always thought that people who "camp outside stores" for anything, cinemas, games etc. Are sad. Sure, you want the game. But so do i, you don't see me hanging around a store before a RELEASE DATE IS ANNOUNCED.

First off, people generally wait about a week, if not a few days before. Secondly, they actually know the item is going to be released within the time they're there, not six months down the line. And finally, i'd have to agree that this is an interesting thread, despite my skeptism that your actually doing it.

SporeFox - February 18, 2007 04:51 PM (GMT)
eet eez a bit stange, but he's doing it for other reasons, you know, he's also being a deciple of Spore... :P

Day Four:

Today was a long day. I won't be able to go into much detail because I want to get some sleep, but I wouldn't be lying if I said that the day was exciting. It was warm today, and the snow that is still on the ground had a long day of melting. Some people were even out in shorts and t-shirts, though I wasn't hardy enough to brave the outdoors in such attire. If my writing seems different, it is because I found a copy of Gulliver's Travels, and spent a good portion of the morning in my tent reading it. The story is interesting, but the language is hard to understand as it was written so long ago.

About noon, there was a large commotion in the parking lot, that I could hear from within my tent. I peeked out and there was a large hot air balloon sitting in the parking lot, half deflated. It looked like it had made an emergency landing, and was in danger of fully deflating, covering many cars with its size. People were scrambling to save their cars, and the fire department and police had been called out to keep order. The whole scene was amazing. Everyone rushing around, half knowing what to do, half doing whatever popped into their minds. I'm sure that this was the first time a hot air balloon had landed in the Best Buy parking lot, so many of the store's employees would come out occasionally to check up on the action.

The man with the RV that I mentioned yesterday had set up his sun tarp, and was reclining in a lawn chair with a beer in hand watching the action. He seemed oddly contemplative when compared to his behavior yesterday, and I guessed that by the looks of things, he was indeed going to be spending at least a couple of days camped out in the parking lot. I walked over to him, and struck up a small conversation about what was going on. He was much more pleasant to talk with today, and we eventually got to talking about what each other were doing in the parking lot. He was surprised to learn that I was waiting so long for a game to come out. He joked that the only thing he would wait 6 months for was a guarantee that he would find a purpose in life. He said that he had been traveling around in his RV from state to state for the past 5 years looking for something to do. At every stop, he would stay for a few weeks and see the sights of the town he was in. He had a small camcorder and was only too happy to show me some of the things he had seen in his travels so far. They were quite extensive, showing everything from his arrival in the new places, to what he did, to his departures. I noticed that his departures were always somewhat somber, usually with someone telling him that he was not wanted. There was something about the videos that he showed me that made me like and even respect the man. We ended up spending most of the afternoon, and even into the evening together. He treated me to supper in his RV, and it turned out that he was a good cook. We had ramen noodles, fried together with an amazing variety of vegetables, and if you think ramen noodles can get old, then I suggest you talk to this man, as he will give you plenty of ideas on how to make the same old same old a new dish. At the end of the evening, I realized that I still did not know the man's name. I inquired about it, and he said "Rick". "Well Rick, it was a pleasure spending the day with you." "Likewise," he replied, "maybe we can get to know each other some more tomorrow." I said that that sounded like a great idea, and with that headed back to my tent.

I must have taken a light nap, because I woke up and it was dark out. I peeked out my tent door and the hot air balloon was gone. There was still some debris on the pavement, and a few workers were going around with flashlights cleaning up. It wasn't immediately apparent to me, but after a minute or two I also noticed that the RV was gone. I scanned the entire parking lot for it, but it was nowhere in sight. I wondered if Rick had been kicked out once again, and wondered if I would ever see him again.

Day five:

It was snowing hard when I woke up, and I zipped down the window of my tent to find that i was snowed in. I guess a plow had come and covered up my door. I'm surprised that the tent held up so well. It was also slightly warmer in the tent. I think the snow was a good insulator, though it was still very cold after the night. I'm glad I brought so many warm clothes and blankets. After thinking about the situation I was in, I was at a loss for what to do, so I fired up the laptop and looked for new news on Spore.
I found some info on 2 new stages that I hadn't heard of before. The first was the molecule stage, which I read was based on Tetris. I immediately fired up a flash version of Tetris, and practiced for a good hour. I'm going to own this molecule stage! The second was terraform stage, which was between civilization and space. Seemed kinda pointless to me, but I suppose you gotta learn to terraform somewhere. I was able to dig out my tent just enough to wiggle out and go find something to eat. I eventually settled on a biscuit and a bottle of orange juice. I think my diet has gone to hell during these five days.

Still no sign of Rick. I wonder if he'll come back.

and guru, you know i posted the molecule phase in news, right?

guru42 - February 21, 2007 03:41 AM (GMT)
Day 6:

Today, I was feeling particularly inventive, so after I woke up and ate breakfast, I went out to the parking lot to act out scenes from Spore. To act out the molecule phase, I would sneak up behind the doors of the store, and when they opened, would rush in and out and in and out. This went on for a good ten minutes before I was asked to stop by an employee. For the Tide Pool phase, I found a puddle in the parking lot and went and stood in it. I would wave my hands in different directions, and occasionally make gestures, or even run up behind people as they navigated the parking lot. I got lots of funny looks for that one. For the creature phase, I acted like I had only one arm, and tried to look like I was walking on it, but that didn't work. Next, I did the crab walk, but my hands got dirty, and I almost got hit by a car. I hopped around on one foot until I got tired. By this time I felt like I had degraded my brain fully, so I went back to the tent. I resolved to finish acting out all the stages of Spore eventually. I read an interesting article about the life and times of Shawn Carter. After lunch I found a skateboard in the parking lot and tried to do some tricks with it. I would get going really fast and then jump off into the snow banks on the side of the parking lot. They weren't as soft as I had assumed, so that ended quickly. I spent the rest of the afternoon showing off my skateboarding skills to anyone who would watch. I had supper, and am going to bed early because I am going to need a lot of energy for the city phase tomorrow.

Still no sign of Rick.

After reading that last entry, i have to go back to my original assumption of either:

A ) This person is sad beyond all recogition, and far more dedicated to a game than i am.

B ) This is obviously fake and he's just writting pretend dairies once a day.

guru42 - February 23, 2007 04:30 AM (GMT)
day eight:

After spending the entire day yesterday sleeping, I was re-energized and ready to do some acting. I awoke bright and early, just as the store was opening and began to plan out my day. Before lunch was city, after lunch was civ, and I might even continue it into tomorrow. To start out my city, I built a large tower with the snow, maybe a foot high, and six inches wide. This I placed in a parking space well away from the entrance of the store. This parking space was going to be my city. But alas, a car came along and ran over the magnificent tower before the rest of the city could be built. I was forced back into the tribal stage once again.

Remembering that I had never acted out the tribal phase in the first place, I figured that this was a sign from the Spore Gods that I needed to do things in order, and that cheating would not be allowed in the game.

I built a much smaller structure out of snow and called it my hut. I went around picking up stones and pebbles and sticks and whatever else i could find on the ground and brought it over to the small snow hut. I used my fingers to represent the creatures I had created, and had them sit in a circle in a sort of tribal council. One by one all of the fingers were voted out of the tribe. Some of the fingers did not like this, so they stayed with the tribe. Now before you read too much into this, I did not cut off any of my fingers. I may be crazy for standing out in front of a store for months or years on end, but I like my fingers a lot, and will need them for playing Spore when it does finally come out.

And with the thought of fingers lingering in you're mind, I end today's journal entry

Hee hee, these diary entries are getting weirder and weirder. I'm still not going to rule out the idea that he is really doing this. If you made a summary of your day, you would obviously try to make it interesting.

Did he actually cut off his fingers and therefore cannot write anything else? Or maybe he just can't be bothered writing any more.
