Title: Funding for the site
Description: How DO you do it?
Keys - May 16, 2006 05:14 AM (GMT)
I'm curious to know Ace, Since you seem to be the prime guy around here and whatnot. How do you keep this place up and running?
The reason why i ask is ive got about 40.00 USD stashed away in my paypal.. its been sitting there collecting dust for god knows how long and if you're open to donations to help the site id love for it to go here rather than on some ebay crap i don't need.
Jonat - May 16, 2006 04:44 PM (GMT)
Invisionfree is a free board, unless of course he's got some sort of subscirption. :P
Ace - May 16, 2006 09:58 PM (GMT)
No need to worry about donating (at least anytime soon!), Keys. InvisionPro Boards has a "child company" called InvisionFree that gives forever-free forums (as long as we keep the ads at the top!).
So it's a nice deal - the forum can become as big as it needs to without a single penny spent. Not that I wouldn't be open to eventually having a real URL if we got about 1000 members. :P

Keys - May 17, 2006 05:13 AM (GMT)
lol oh i know the basic forums themselves are free. Which is awesome and all that! But i mean improvements.. upgrades, limit extentions and all that jumbo have to cost something don't they? :P
at any rate, if you guys do need something of a push out of a hole. Drop me a PM and im on it! :)

No need to worry. Everything is free. All I have to have are ads - they're the ones right below our icon and occasionally at the bottom of posts. Not that intrusive.
Almost everything is free, though - unlimited posts and forums, plenty of uploading space, bandwidth, members, etc. It's all wonderfully free. It's quite a deal. And the forums look much nicer than the ones made on
ProBoards.

Can you pay to remove the ads? On Forumer I can... but it's by page view and includes guests when using phpbb, so it'd cost more than it'd be worth...
Eeeek! Not Proboards! I hate them with a passion. The first Pink Imoen was there, yes what a terrible and dark past I have...
Keys - May 20, 2006 06:54 PM (GMT)
Well dang, with EVERYTHING free at the expense of a few docile ads id say you REALLY came out ahead Ace.. nice!
Ace - May 21, 2006 01:47 AM (GMT)
Nearly everything free. Not EVERYTHING...but dang near close. :D
macmarge - May 24, 2006 02:30 AM (GMT)
Yea, Invisionfree rocks. My site, PhantomSims, is hosted by Invisionfree for the forums. It's also hosted by tripod for the downloads section. Tripod is another good free web hosting site.
Ace - May 24, 2006 10:24 PM (GMT)
Tripod's not bad, though I'm not too fond of the small amount of size you're given. I did use it until some...er...technical issues came up... <_<
Strabo - May 24, 2006 10:49 PM (GMT)
It you use FireFox (like me), there are extensions that you can get for free. I have one called AdBlock. I right-click an advert and select AdBlock Ad. It is so satisfying to see the advertisers money go to waste. In fact, I've blocked over 3,267 ads. Those are ads that I never have to look at again.
FireFox rocks!
Ace - May 28, 2006 05:13 AM (GMT)
Sometimes the ads are fun to look at though. LOL. :P
Keys - May 29, 2006 04:41 AM (GMT)
lol i will havta agree.. on a rare occasion the ads can be quite entertaining.. sometimes even down right strange and unique.
sevirit - May 29, 2006 04:44 AM (GMT)
Yep thats true one time I got this fun game about por........ NO MORE WILL BE SAID
Ace - May 30, 2006 03:56 AM (GMT)
^That look suspicously like you were about to type "porn" in. :P
Keys - June 1, 2006 03:59 AM (GMT)
no no.. he was simply talking about portfolios for a local college...
Ace - June 1, 2006 11:17 PM (GMT)
Since there are SO MANY games that have college portfolios. :P

I could create a redirect from my website such as www.digitalrebels.org.uk/spore or something if you want something more memorable
Ace - July 8, 2006 05:49 AM (GMT)
^Sounds interesting. Though I'd have to think this one through. I don't have much of a problem with remembering the URL or anything...and I just have it bookmarked anyways, but yeah...
Jakeman27 - July 10, 2006 06:19 PM (GMT)
you can't have www.digitalrebels.org.uk/spore now because i used it for my personal website but you can use any other you can think of
Immy - July 11, 2006 06:13 AM (GMT)
I think that
http://s10.invisionfree.com/spore is about the same length as that... I see nothing wrong with the url...
Strabo - July 21, 2006 12:57 AM (GMT)
Only problem is is that it would be almost impossible to remember the URL if I had to reinstall Windows without backing up my favorites.
Edit: How much work do you do on the site? It looks great, must've taken you awhile to get it to this current modis operandi. (I just said a funny phrase without knowing what it means. hehe.) If I used the wrong word, I meant the. . . darn can't think of a way to say it. . . the state of the site, I suppose.
Cool site Immy. First time i've clicked on the sig pic there. :)
Ace - July 21, 2006 05:31 PM (GMT)
If you're asking about me rather than PI, it took me probably six to ten hours to get the site where it was during the open. That DID include registering the forum, adding tags, finding a skin, creating a banner, getting buttons recolored (not my doing...Rein did that part), and advertising. But by now I think it's a bit higher - I've done plenty of time in the Admin CP touching up things that I think need altering.
It's just all part of the job.
