Title: Music

SporeFan09 - April 25, 2006 01:50 AM (GMT)
While whaching the 1hr movie I noticed cultural music in the "city-dweller" stage of the game. What I want to know is whether or not that music was created from the game, or just added to the CD to be played during certain events?

Mr Cheese - April 25, 2006 05:04 AM (GMT)
I hope they don't just brush over the music, a game this great should have a soundtrack to match. Interactive music would be great. It would be cool if there was just one theme for each stage, but the instruments and mood change depending on what's happening. Like in the cultural stage, the music suits the kind of culture you've made, and what your city looks like. To answer your question, I don't think it's likely that you can customise your culture's "theme music", but it is possible that they will have music to suit how your culture acts.

SporeFox - April 25, 2006 10:35 AM (GMT)
0_0 i think both of u are right. it's a really good idea to have music go with the game, whilst u might ger bored of it, so it's also a good idea to have a few different soundtracks to switch from...

SporeFan09 - April 25, 2006 10:34 PM (GMT)
I forgot about interactive music, that would be really nice. Actually it will. If you remember the "mating" part of the one hour movie with Will Wright, the music swiched to (if I remember right) Berry White music. :D

Mr Cheese - April 27, 2006 11:36 PM (GMT)
Music can get a bit more interactive than that. If you've ever played Banjo-Kazooie or Monkey Island, you'll know what I mean. It's like one big symphony and when you do different things, different instruments come in and play their rendition of the theme that's running. I hope they do that (but it's unlikely, not many games do this, even though it was done 12 years ago).

dorkfire - April 28, 2006 10:10 PM (GMT)
yea i think it will be like alot of action games, the music changes depending on wats going on, like fast paced music for fighting, and the romantic music for the mating, and wat not.

Strabo - May 10, 2006 11:16 PM (GMT)
okay. . .

that was REALLY WEIRD, SporeFox. I no longer doubt that anyone can be wierder than you. Even though I am pretty darn weird in my own special way.

SporeFan09 - May 13, 2006 01:47 AM (GMT)
Why do you need your own music for mating.....I WON'T ASK. Ignore the post, please.

Maxis has never been one to skim over music. So no worries.

As for this topic - I would ask that you would PLEASE stay ON-topic. It's not that the topics are SORT of staying on topic, but some of the posts have questionable things in the spam area. Don't mean to be a spoilsport, but I'd rather not have the forum look nonsense-ical.

andrew.glesener - May 13, 2006 05:42 AM (GMT)
Remeber in gdc 05 vid where he comparing his civ to the other tech race and he said it would be like more industrial sounding...

Sorry to bump but HUGE NEWS!

The music, like everything else, is going to be generated PROCEDURALLY. Brian Eno is doing the score for it. Read more here:

Keys - January 26, 2007 11:34 PM (GMT)
Hm, thats a really interesting bit of News... Thanks Cheese!

Mr Cheese - January 28, 2007 01:39 AM (GMT)
I'm wondering whether it's going to be completely random or have some sort of structure. Like if it will be told at certain points to have a set out beat or tempo, or note configuration rules, like jazz. Or the more simple, but equally important matter of whether music that makes itself will sound good.

Strabo - January 28, 2007 06:56 AM (GMT)
They REALLY have procedural on the brain for Spore.

Mr Cheese - January 28, 2007 11:36 AM (GMT)
LOL, yeah I guess Will Wright's trying to make a point

Jonat - January 28, 2007 09:27 PM (GMT)
I hate jazz.... XD

Strabo - January 28, 2007 09:34 PM (GMT)
They REALLY have a big time "feature creep" at the dev camp.

They just keep on announcing more and more stuff about it.

Spore is probably gonna release with Duke Nukem: Forever if this keeps up.

You mean the first video released about Spore? It was a speech Will Wright gave a few years back about procedural gaming, then proceeded to play the game from cell all the way to space.

Dragonspore - February 4, 2007 03:33 PM (GMT)
saw the vid version of this on youtube.

Keys - February 5, 2007 01:35 AM (GMT)
Very old now, too! Alot of what was displayed in that video is now out of date... though still interesting!

Dragonspore - February 5, 2007 12:05 PM (GMT)
SPOREFOX IS BACK!!!

Keys - February 7, 2007 05:35 AM (GMT)
Lol, yes he is. Thank you Dragonspore. ;)

hmm..i have no clue!..i just like the numa numa song!

Mr Cheese - February 12, 2007 11:54 AM (GMT)
LOL, man that song came out of nowhere. Some guy with a weight problem pretented to sing it into his webcam then a few days later it has well and truly taken over the internet.

Back on task; now that we know the music is created procedurally, it probably means we won't be able to add our own music due to the system.

Keys - February 12, 2007 08:45 PM (GMT)
The song was getting popular in eastern Europe up until you get into the Asias. Then with the New Jersey ( i think it was) Kid singing it on the webcam and editing it. It became extremely viral. The kid got on Good Morning America, several local news casts, and even in the paper! Amazing. The kid's 15 seconds of fame.

Mr Cheese - February 18, 2007 10:54 AM (GMT)
Does anyone want to add any thoughs on music that makes itself? It sounds like it could be either really simple or really complicated. If the coding includes rules like chords and rhythm, I'll be really impressed.

SporeFox - February 18, 2007 12:07 PM (GMT)
http://garybrolsma.net/ 'tis the new numa!

me: likes all music, exept for modern country, rap, and some pop(i just don't like britany spears and those lip-syncing idiots)...and i only like some classical...but everything else is really good

Spore-addict - February 19, 2007 01:39 PM (GMT)

Spore-addict - February 19, 2007 11:49 PM (GMT)
Its a game made for the amiga 500 which had some cool music. Old computergame that had alien music. Like the music. Its really gives you chills down your spine.

Mr Cheese - February 20, 2007 02:02 AM (GMT)
Yeah, music from games is really underrated. Has anyone here played Curse of Monkey Island? That game had great music. If we could add our own music to Spore, I'd use it.

(soundtracks.mixnmojo.com) Third one down.

Mr Cheese - February 20, 2007 02:28 AM (GMT)
Hey Spore-addict, did you know your game had a soundtrack CD released? Couldn't find you actual music but here ya go.
