Title: Here we go

The LHC is set to fire in a little over 1 day.
http://www.lhcountdown.com/For those who don't know what the LHC is, it is the 'Large Hadron Collider', a super collider / Partical Accelerator that has been made in Switzerland.
Basically it is a long tunnel that is designed to take atoms/particles and smash them together at such speeds micro black holes will be made.
The main concerns with this is that it will create a black hole which will rapidly grow and suck in the Earth, ending everything

Really the risk of a Micro Black Hole forming is well micro and if one does form the possibility of it lasting longer than micro seconds is even smaller than one forming. Although it would be kickass if a Black hole and a White hole formed which would lead people trying to find matter x (Matter that could stabilize a black and white hole which would create a worm hole). A guy can dream can't he?

I personally think the risks outweigh the benifits. What if they fuck up, and we all get sucked in? Bye bye earth. Can't recover from a black hole.

In my honest opinion meh we wouldn't even know we where dead until after we where dead its not like the whole black hole thing is going to hurt. Also they are not trying to form black holes they are trying to recreate the Big Bang on a small scale micro black holes would just be a side effect. Also they may try to find the "god particle" the particle that makes up everything and can't be broken down. Any micro black holes that would be made would probably only last a hundredth of a second which is not enough time to gain any mass or suck anything in people who are worried about the LHC killing us all are usually uninformed and paranoid. I consider the whole Black Hole killing us all up there with a nuke lighting the atmosphere on fire >.>

I have to agree with Masko.
It's entirely safe what they're doing in Switzerland or the Swiss government wouldn't be allowing the funding and operation of the project. It's just in science we are taught that black holes are deadly mishaps in space that suck everything in and theoretically destroy it just as it passes beyond the event horizon. Alright, and so when scientists say they have a Machine that could quite possible produce "Micro black holes" people freak out and go nuts thinking that the machine is going to destroy the world. When in fact these Micro black holes have been appearing and disappearing continuously since the dawn of time in the universe. The only difference between the black holes in nature and the ones these scientists are trying to create is the fact that the artificial ones are created when the scientists want them to and live a millionth of a millisecond longer than those in nature. Allowing scientists to literally... and safely observe black holes.
The reason there is no worry is that these black holes ALWAYS collapse on themselves within a short time (within a millisecond or so), and so producing them in the lab will have no negative effects. They really can't screw up, as physics won't allow them to. We don't have the energy available to produce a full-scale black hole, and these mini ones collapse under their own weight in no time. There's no way we can screw up. People are just expressing paranoia.
The benefits;
- Learning more about how Space and Time work
- Possible Space Travel benefits
- New Technology
- Possible source of energy down the road
I personally think the benefits outweigh the nearly non-existent possibilities of the risks.
Mankind and technology will never go anywhere unless we step out of our safe houses and actually take a leap or two. This one is a small puddle to jump over. Even if we fall into the puddle it won't even soak our shoes.

I would much rather be paranoid as fuck than dead as fuck.

Good news Travi. Thanks to paranoid people it has been delayed until November.

Oh for the love of thats completely retarded if paranoid people had asked me to delay it i would of delayed it to December 31 2012 just to fuck with there heads. Also i feel like spouting cool black hole non sense (Takes out his hijacking monkey wrench)
Number one Did you know? That in a black whole there is a area ( the exact name escapes me) that the gravitational force is so strong that light is in orbit around the black hole effectively letting you see the back of your own head.
Number Two did you know? That if we where to launch a space ship to a black holes event horizon (Point of no return) and back that the observer in the inside of the ship would see everything as normal the journey lasting only a couple of days or however long it would last, but to a outside observer the ship would slow down until it seemed to stand still and would have to leave because it would take years for the ship to come back out due to gravitational time distortion. Effectively making a time travel device.
Number 3 (i used a number because i wanted to yaaaaaaaay) did you know? That Black Hole singularitys are similar to Time Lord science (Massive Nerd Props if you get that)

LOL.

No one got the Timelord joke? I'm disappointed
