Title: The "Get-Back" list!
OzzyFan - February 7, 2007 12:04 AM (GMT)
If anyone read Myksmom's post under the "Prejudice" topic, I have to ask: how many of you have your own personal "Get Back" list? I must say, if any teacher ever made a derogatory comment to me about my lack of a formal education, any future request by that person goes immediately to the bottom of a long, deep pile! I can ALWAYS find something to do besides what they want/need. I would never sabotage their plans or do anything to hurt them or the kids, but it might take me 3-4 weeks, at least, to get around to raising a table in their room, or fixng a pencil sharpener, or installing a power strip, or getting them an extra desk for their new student..............

Hey oz when I saw the word prejudice I knew it wasn't the right word. Prejudice is associated with hate. I think we're talking about arrogant ignorance. Theres always a few bad apples that spoil the whole bunch, but I don't think that someones personal problem deserves that much attention. Negative attention is still attention. Its not easy to ignore and if it was being a christian would be a snap. Being an retired cop I was exposed to everything thats negitive. I was called names from people who didn't know me, I was damned if I did or if I didn't and people hated me because of bad experiences or past down parental views. Yet I had to be just and objective and I was held accountable for everything once i walked into the station. Thats why I like being a custodian. Wipe it off, flush it and walk away. You a great person and you do a great job. Take care Oz.
P.S. get a dog. My family was o.k. the dogs were manic depressants.

I remember one teacher with attitude, but she mellowed - eventually. What I did was always do the tasks she asked, when she asked, and with a smile...I even put a mint candy on her chair each night after cleaning.
It became less of an uncomfortable time going into her room and as time went by she actually became a human (or humane  ). I am sure this won't always work and I did not do it to train her, but as a "hold-it-in-semi-humor" way to survive being around a meanie without becoming negative myself. And the mint? It WAS a dig...but thankfully one she didn't perceive. Still makesme smileto remember the mints.

Whats worse a teacher that talks down or the custodian who complains about it all the time to his fellow workers when their on break or eating dinner.

Good one Spongebon! And I don't necessarily think "prejudice" is the wrong term, as it means to pre-judge somone based on what they look like (or do for a living!) I really haven't had to deal with much
"attitude", as teachers all realize that someday they will need me! I have heard over and over from young, newly-graduated teachers that their college professors stress "Be nice and make friends with your secretaries and custodians". We can really make their work day run smoothly if they let us.
