Day of Mourning :canada:

Every year on April 28th, the national Day of Mourning is observed to commemorate those killed or hurt by workplace injuries or disease.

Last year, 101 people died in Ontario because of traumatic workplace injuries; and more died due to occupational disease. On April 28, we remember them, as well as the thousands of others injured. For them, life will never be the same.

April 28th is a day to join together in our commitment to eliminate all workplace injuries and fatalities. After all, they can all be prevented — there really are no accidents.

Mark the Day
Workplace parties and trade unions traditionally mark the Day with vigils, services, or candle-lighting ceremonies; unveiling monuments; flying flags at half-mast; or, wearing ribbons and black armbands. A moment of silence is also often observed at 11:00 am.

The date was chosen in 1984, when the Canadian Labour Congress proclaimed the Day to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the day the first Ontario Worker’s Compensation Act’s was approved by the government. The Day of Mourning was enshrined in national legislation by an Act of Parliament on February 1, 1991.
