I have worked at two different schools and have seen two different ways of cleaning urinals. One way is take the toilet bowl wand and use it to scrub the inside part of urinal. The other way,is spray disinfectant on the urinal and wipe clean with dry cloth.I have been a custodian for about three years and no supervisor has told me proper way of cleaning urinals. What is your method?
toiletguy Since were not allowed to use any disinfecting spray in state buildings we use toilet bowl cleaner and a good brush.Squeeze a good amount in the urinal and under the rim, brush good and let sit for a few minutes.Brush and Flush and it's nice and clean.I like to wipe it down with a paper towel after for anything I missed and outside too. Some people prefer a rag but I like to be able to throw the germs away. But ot each there own.
When I started at the rest area where I work the urinals stunk so bad I'd gag every time I cleaned them. To cleam them I first spray the whole outside with Virex 256. Then I spray Virex on the inside and under the rim where the urinal screen is.
I discovered that alot of the smell was coming from the rim on each side of the urinal on the inside and up at the top where the water comes out. Not only do I spray virex in these areas but I also scrub them with the johnny mop after I apply my bowl cleaner. After cleaningg the inside I wipe down the outside. I then spray End Bac II on the inside and outside and also spray all the way around the rim. Urinals being what they are the smell isn't completely gone but I can clean them now without gagging.
Another couple things that should be done on a daily basis is to use a liquid drain maintainer to help cut down on the uric acid build up in the pipes and pour one to two gallons of hot water down each urinal everyday. This will help flush any uric acid crystal and hair out of the pipes.
Like most of us I perform the task as trained by janitors in the school district. Their procedure is to half fill a sturdy bucket with disinfect and use a bunny tail toilet mop. Avoid splashing on your clothing or skin. The first think you do is hit the flusher button, and then if theres a flat top on the urinal clean that. Then with a saturated mop run the top and side creases. Then saturate the mop and starting at the top do the back of the urinal in a side to side motion from top to bottom. Also with a saturated mop hit both sides and the foot circle. Remember it takes approx. 10 minutes for the disinfect to kill what it can so wait until your done with the restroom before flushing. Remember that only when your there is that urinal going to be clean. By flushing it your washing the disinfectant down into the drain so only flush it once so the disinfectant coats the drain. Also remember that most disinfectants do not work on a dirty surface and the surface has to be clean before application.
Always wear gloves for your protection against bacterial contamination through hand cracks and sores and chemical absorbsion through your skin pores.
Make sure that the restroom door is open to improve air flow because with restricted air flow your breathing in the vapors. Read product MSD to check for Carcinogens and associated health problems. Remember when using a sprayer your increasing the amount of aerosol and breathing in more chemicals. Quat has been known to cause Asmtha attacks. I used to have an officer that I called my canary. Everytime I started spraying with quat he would start coughing in his office. He was getting it through the central air. I quite using quat.
The most important thing is restrict the use of bowl cleaners. They contain acids that can be damaging to you lungs when breathing the vapors. Some of the vapors can damage your eyes from exposure to the acids. You say it doesn't bother you when you clean them. Remember that you are breathing them in everyday and lung damage is sometimes not reversable. Remember you don't get paid to be a lab rat. Read label warnings; a lab rat put them their for your health and to protect you. Take care and God bless.
Thanks for all of your reply's, they have been very interesting and informative
