Title: salt application on sidewalks
Description: Is there a right way to do it.

I have a problem with maintainance at our City Hall. The problem is that they are piling on the salt up to the doorway. All Im doing is mopping desk chair floor protector mats to remove the salt stains and vacuuming up the salt off the carpets every day. I was going to suggest to them that they give me a 20 ft buffer from the doors and let the pedestrians carry it through the 20 ft instead of directly salting up to the building. I even started watching when they salt and after they throw the salt down and leave I sweep the salt to the sides of the sidewalk. I have been looking for professional guidelines on the web but yet haven't found anything except roads. Does anyone know of anywhere I might find professional instructions on what to do and what not to do when salting sidewalks. The woodfloors are getting preserved but the carpets are getting destroyed. Any help or suggests would be appreciated

We don't allow salt at entrances. We use icemelter. (Avalanche) Leave the salt in the parking lot.

 winter is the worst for floors. Salt is dragged in along with sand and it gets every where. I have alot of walk off mats and change them when they are wet. We have a daytime custodian that spreads the salt thick (maintenance never salts here) I go out at night and sweep it off in front of the doors. I vaccum EVERY NIGHT but after I pick up the wet rugs. I would love to here an easier solution.

While trying to find a solution I did learn that in Europe they pre salt rather than post salt. The reasoning behind salting prior to a storm prevents the snow from sticking to the walk service or roads. This would prevent slipping and salt being such an acessible walk on nusiance.

That is exactly what I told my supervisor we should do.But do you think he listens to me? I really can't afford to move to Europe right now you know over worked ,under paid and over looked. :hearviolins:
