Title: bootlegs, knockoffs, clones, etc.

Collector - October 26, 2008 04:44 PM (GMT)
I was in C&C Games yesterday and they had a lot of those fake SNES controllers, so I'm wondering how often anybody else sees fake, knockoff, clone, bootleg, etc. stuff.

What fake SNES controllers? These:

They're pretty common on eBay, where they're claimed to be "official". I've been seeing them at flea markets occasionally too. See the box in person and it's obvious that it's printed in a much lower quality than a real one. Yesterday I took the opportunity to open the box and take a look, and the controllers themselves are even more obviously fake, with the circle around the buttons being completely the wrong color:

I've run into a range of NES clones: Ones shaped like N64 controllers - the Super Joy and Power Joy, one shaped like a laptop, some shaped like a PSone, and basic little ones. They always take 60-pin Famicom carts instead of the 72-pin NES ones. C&C Games also carries the recently popular things like the FC Twin and Retro-Duo that play both NES and SNES, or NES and Genesis. I'd like to have those, but not when they cost several times what I generally pay for both consoles combined.

I've never come across any actual NES pirate carts, but I've seen a few Famicom multicarts. They've always been ones made by the same people as the clones. I've never seen one just meant to stand on its own, except one I got on eBay a long time ago.

Then I've seen a couple of Game Boy multicarts. I'm regretting not snatching up that one from a week ago. Both were really surprising to see, but come to think of it, they ought to be more common than they are, since the Game Boy is region free.

I just see a lot of Yobo stuff and a couple Famiclones. Not the super ghetto/legally questionable N64 controller type ones, just the Generation NEX style ones that cost about $50.

I really came close to getting a (S)NES hybrid.

But I chickened out.

I'd really love to get my hands on the "24-bit" FC/Mega Drive combo with a 6 button joystick mounted onto the console. I'm sure it'd fall apart in seconds, but it's so unique.

Got a photo of this?

Sweet.

I was in Family Dollar a couple of days ago and saw what seemed like some typical crummy pnp controller. I figured it would be a bunch of lackluster generic games, but I took a look at the screens on the back. My first clue that I might be interested was a screen that was clearly a graphically altered Mappy. Looking around a bit more, I spotted graphic hacks of Mario Bros., Donkey Kong 3, a few other familiar NES games and even one of the Contras. There were 50 games in all, and I get to be surprised because an info sticker covered about 15 of the screens.

I was only there to buy a can of shaving cream, so I didn't have enough money on me, but I'll have to pick it up next time I'm in town.

So I got that 50 game plug'n play. So here's all the exciting details.

The name is, I guess, 50 Games Plug'N Play. It's made by Manley and has the item # 42203. It's an NOAC, but has no cart port.

It looks and feels really cheap. Well, because it is. I could probably crush it in my hands easily. If you stepped on it, it would have no chance. Typical of a Famiclone, the A & B buttons are swapped. Fortunately, there aren't any games included where that really matters. The dpad, surprisingly, seems to work really well.

It's also really light. I'm serious when I say that the 4 AAA batteries I have in it weigh more. It's kind of amazing, you can see all the empty space inside, an NES and the necessary parts of the controller take up barely any more space than a real NES controller.

The games all have altered graphics and music. A few of the graphic changes are interesting, but they mostly range from slightly worse to terrible. The music is all either replaced with generic crap, or similar to the original but altered. "Let's take a bunch of great Nintendo games and make them look and sound terrible. We'll make millions!"

01. Fighter
"Shoot the enemies."
Super C with a weapon select and shitty graphics.

02. Racing Car
"Drive fast and win the race."
Race America with the strange American-style portraits replaced with anime ones, but the names and descriptions are kept so pictures of women end up with male names, and vice-versa. Now be featuring Engrish.

03. Space War
"Shoot the aircraft and other flying objects."
Vertical shmup with purchasable bombs. I'm not familiar with it.

04. Street War
"Attack the enemies."
Mighty Final Fight with modified sprites that actually aren't bad, and strangely recolored backgrounds. Also features some fun Engrish.

05. Air Tiger
"Shoot the aircraft."
1942 but slightly shittier-looking.

06. Monster
"Shoot the objects that coming towards you."
Son Son, but you play as somebody in a snow suit.

07. Inclement Trip
"Drive and shoot the enemies."
Some sort of vertical driving shooter. Not familiar with it.

08. Magic Block
"Eliminate the blocks. The blocks will be eliminated if there are three blocks of the same color in the vertical, horizontal or diagonal position."
Some version of Columns, with the "Troika" music from Tengen Tetris.

09. Pocky
"Go forward and shoot the enemies."
Some kind of platform shooter. Not familiar with it.

10. 100 Meter Dash
"Finish the 100 meter dash in the shortest time."
Track & Field 100 Meter Dash event.

11. Panzer Fly Car
"Finish the race before the fuel is used up."
Road Fighter with different graphics.

12. Tennis
"Play tennis."
Nintendo's Tennis.

13. Winter Cup
"Play ice hockey."
Ice Hockey, relatively unchanged.

14. Bumping R-16
"Drive through the small and large maze and get the bonus icons."
Yeah, I dunno. It has rooms that work like Venture, if anybody remembers that game. In-game, it says "Bumingr R-16".

15. Javelin Throw
"Throw the javelin as far as possible."
Track & Field Javelin Throw event.

16. Risker
"Drive and finish the race."
Exitebike mode A, but with a car, and more exciting music.

17. Van-1
"Shoot the enemies. They attack you in the air and also from the ground."
TwinBee, but ugly.

18. Dragon
"Get the ball and the dragon will become longer and longer."
Snake or Nibbles or whatever, but with dragon graphics.

19. Hot Speed
"Finish the race within the time limit."
Some driving game.

20. Xterk-2
"Shoot the flying objects."
A view-from-behind space shooter.

21. Long Jump
"Jump for the longest distance."
Track & Field Long Jump event.

22. Diamond
"Catch the ball and get higher scores."
It's some kind of Breakout/Arkanoid clone. It looks a lot like Arkanoid, same layout, same level design (so far), but it plays differently. The ball tends to start eating through bricks pretty easily, and hitting the diamond on screen finishes the level.

23. Skeet Shooting
"Shoot the skeet."
Track & Field Skeet Shooting event.

24. 110-M Hurdles
"Finish the 110-m hurdles in the shortest time."
Track & Field 110-Meter Hurdles event.

25. Archery
"Play archery."
Track & Field Archery event.

26. Hassle
"Shoot the enemies."
Front Line where you and the enemies are foxes or something.

27. Ladangel
"A game with different adventures."
Challenger with cutesy sprites and poor color choices.

28. Destroy1
"Destroy all the icons."
Wrecking Crew with different graphics. Kind of looks like they were going for a bankrobbing theme.

29. Goodhand
"Go forward and avoid crashing with the objects."
City Connection where your car is a motorcycle and the enemies are alien creatures. It would be nice, but it no longer shows which parts of the ground you've covered. D'oh.

30. Combata
"Kill the enemies."
Ninja-kun - Majou no Bouken but you play as a little horned guy and the enemies are lions or something.

31. Billiard
"Shoot the balls into the holes."
Lunar Ball, I think.

32. Toto
"Shoot the objects."
Astro Robo SaSa, but you play as the guy from Milon's Secret Castle, and the balloons holding E-things are rockets holding fish. And there's UFO things.

33. UFO Race
"Complete the within the time limit."
F-1 Race but the cars are UFOs and the background is black with an attempt to resemble space.

34. Earth Guard
"Shoot the enemies."
Horizontal shmup, sort of like Sqoon or Stinger.

35. Golgotha
"Place the bomb to kill the enemies."
Bomberman but you play as the guy from Lode Runner, and it seems to be in a graveyard, and the enemies are tree stumps.

36. Hoodle
"Get score with the pinball."
Nintendo's Pinball but with weird stuff.

37. Aether
"Kill the enemies."
A single-screen space shooter. I forget the name. Now with smiley faces and parachutes.

38. Sky-Invader
"Shoot the aircraft."
Sky Destroyer with a pink sky and an ugly plane.

39. Penguin
"Eat all the food and then go to the penguin who needs help to save it."
Nuts & Milk with penguins.

40. Rouge Brothers
"Freeze the enemies and kick them out."
Mario Bros. without hair, mustache or overalls. The shellcreepers are familiar, like some anime cat, I think. And you can stand on the pipes at the bottom of the screen. Odd.

41. Smart Acel
"Collect the alphabets. A bonus word will be shown on TV. You will get bonus if you spell the word correctly."
Super Arabian, but ugly.

42. Surface Fire
"Shoot the enemies."
Millipede, but with tanks and UFOs and stuff.

43. TNT
"Place a bomb a kill the enemies."
Bomberman but you play as a kid with sunglasses, and your bombs are fancy electronic ones.

44. Aether Kavass
"Shoot the enemies."
Macross with different enemies, such as helicopters... in space.

45. Triple Jump
"Jump for the longest distance."
Track & Field Triple Jump event.

46. Brush Roll 2
"Paint all the floor surface."
Brush Roller with worse graphics.

47. Conte Enegy
"Get all the blue balls."
Lode Runner where the enemies look like Mike from Monsters Inc.

48. Bandits
"Shoot the monster."
Donkey Kong 3, but DK is some scary-ass alien motherfucker, and the bugs are stealing your bags of money.

49. Bounce
"Get all the bonus icons."
Mappy with people.

50. Bitha
"Shoot the parachute so that the enemies will drop and die."
Pooyan with enemies that kind of look like Mario from the front, but horrible monsters from the side.

23. Skeet Shooting
"Shoot the skeet."

:eyebrow:

Also, "Inclement Trip" is probably the best video game name ever. It should assuredly win some sort of award.

Damn, Scumdogg made BOTH jokes I wanted to make...

So I got this Yobo light gun for the NES. It looks like a Zapper, only much cheaper. The box says it comes in gray and orange, but I've also seen one online that's aqua. Mine's the orange. The orange part is really bright and the gray part is kind of dark.

The worst thing about it is the plug. I had a hell of a time just trying to get the damn thing plugged in. Then more fun getting it out again. I hope I didn't damage my NES. Aside from that, it feels really cheap, like it's going to break the next time I use it.

I didn't have any game handy that relied heavily on accuracy, but it actually seems to work pretty well. The trigger doesn't snap back like a real zapper, so it allows for faster firing in the few games where that's useful.

Oh, and some Engrish on the box:
- Work with standard CRT monitor
- Come with 8ft Extension Cable
- Come in Gray or Neon Orange Cable

Scumdogg's joystick is pretty fake, it looked a lot bigger in the photos he showed me.
