Title: What's the most...
Collector - June 6, 2007 06:26 PM (GMT)
This talk of $200 games got me thinking.
What's the most you've spent on a (console or handheld) game? Arcade machine? Console? Handheld? New? Used?
What do you have that's worth the most now?
The most I've ever spent on a single game was Final Fantasy 3/6 for SNES. It was $70, and the game tended to be hard to find, so I wasn't able to get it for the $60 that SNES games usually were.
I think the most I paid for a used game was FF1+2 for Famicom, at about $60 + shipping. I regret it now, because I think it's cheaper for a complete one (mine's missing some kind of book) at Play-Asia.
Most for a console was $300 for a PS2.
Most for a handheld was $160 for my special edition WSC + FF1.
The only single item I can think of that's worth a lot now is my complete Vectrex, but I don't know what that's worth these days, since there don't seem to be any boxed ones on eBay right now.
Scumdogg - June 6, 2007 06:43 PM (GMT)
I remember several SNES games hitting that $70 mark myself, especially some of the RPGs.
The most i've ever paid for a game was probably the standard $60 retail for Crackdown on the 360. Hmm, it's really weird that with 850 or so games, the one i spent the most on was Crackdown.... Gears of War collector's edition would've won out at $70, but i didn't pay for it.
I only have 2 classic games i've ever spent any significant money on, and that was a $20 copy of Final Fantasy III, and $25 for Paper Mario. The vast majority of my classic collection falls into the $5 and under category. I feel this makes it all the more impressive. :)
The most i've ever spent on a console was $400 for the 360, although we did purchase that with a gigantic stack of Target gift cards from the wedding. The most cash i've ever dropped on a console was $300 on a PS2 when GTA III was released.
My most expensive portable was whatever i paid for our DSes at the time i got them. I don't remember exactly what they were going for at the time, but i bought two. :)
I don't really know what any of my stuff is worth, specifically, as i'm never on Ebay and i almost never pay close to actual value for anything. I guess if i were to sell off games individually, i'd probably get the most for my non-GH copy of Symphony of the Night, or Castlevania Chronicles. But neither of those is exactly mind-blowingly expensive.
strizzuth - June 6, 2007 08:50 PM (GMT)
Probably FFIIIus or Chrono Trigger, which I seem to remember paying something like $60-$70 for a piece.
My PS2 and DS Lite both cost $120 each, and that's the most I've spent on hardware. Unless my Dreamcast cost more, but I don't remember what I paid for that. Generally speaking, I can't stand the thought of spending $100 or more on a game system, which severely limits what I'm willing to buy. My original plan was to buy the DS Lite when it hit $80, but a friend kept badgering me to get one so I caved. I haven't regretted the purchase one bit.

The most expensive console for me was the FF Crystal Chronicles Gamecube - A little over $1000
The most expensive handheld is probably my FF3 DS, or maybe my Japanese Cellphones - $350 average for those things.
My most expensive game, I'm not allowed to mention, as per the agreement. Let's just say that is was REALLY expensive, its probably the only one in existence and Square/Nintendo would be pissed if they knew I had it. A screenshot of the game is on my site, which I dumped and have never (and will never) share the ROM with anyone for my own protection. I don't even keep the ROM on my computer for fear of someone gaining access to it. Collector would LOVE to get his hands on this game. I wish I could say more. In fact, if Collector thinks back to one of our first conversations, before I had WarMECH's Domain, or was it right after I first launched my site?!?!?, he was given a HUGE hint as to what I have. GOD DAMN IT, I WISH I COULD BRAG ABOUT OWNING THIS GAME!!!
strizzuth - June 7, 2007 01:26 AM (GMT)
So you can't tell us what it is... Can you tell us what it cost?

I completely forgot about that. *jealous*
Scumdogg - June 7, 2007 04:43 AM (GMT)
I wish i knew what the hell was going on. I can keep secrets. :(
strizzuth - June 7, 2007 05:21 AM (GMT)
Me too. Like that time when I killed Jon-Benet Ramsey. I TOTALLY never told anyone about that! I could keep this a secret too!
Marcelo X - June 7, 2007 02:32 PM (GMT)
>>>I completely forgot about that. *jealous*
So you remember now?
>>>Like that time when I killed Jon-Benet Ramsey.
Why can't the bloodlust of gay people be controlled. WHY??? You should be like straight guys, calm and peaceful.
>>>Can you tell us what it cost?
Part of the agreement was to not mention that either... I can say this, it was more expensive then the first used car I purchased in San Diego.
Collector - June 7, 2007 08:34 PM (GMT)
I remember, and it makes me sad that I'll never get to play it.
All the forced secrecy - did you buy it from an employee of Nintendo or something?
strizzuth - June 7, 2007 10:29 PM (GMT)
Hey, the bitch bad it coming.
ie - June 8, 2007 05:28 AM (GMT)
This conversation has just become too weird for me.
Marcelo X - June 8, 2007 06:38 AM (GMT)
>>>did you buy it from an employee of Nintendo or something?
You could say something like that. He is still employed at the place (could be Nintendo, Square or a certain magazine.) I'm still in contact with the guy, I promised to not screw him over and I can't go back on it. Still, would be nice to share it though.
Scumdogg - June 8, 2007 06:50 AM (GMT)
*cough*pm*cough*

Carry this over to Member's Only, where Marcelo could post the item for a few days and then delete it without us quoting it, so everyone could see it, and then magically transport it back to this section.
It will work, I assure you.

Scumdogg - June 8, 2007 04:44 PM (GMT)
Okay, let's all stop prodding Marcelo and his Forbidden Game of Mystery.
ie - June 8, 2007 05:17 PM (GMT)
(Hey Marcelo, I'll give you a zillion dollars if you let me know what game it was before you let Scumdogg know. ;) )
So, most expensive game, eh?
I know we got most of the SNES RPGs and N64 RPG (Paper Mario at least) when they came out, so that was about full price. I think, actually, Paper Mario was the most expensive; I'll just say $60.
Consoles? We got them new, and by new I mean NEW, so since I'm not really comfortable talking about purchases not made by me, I'll just leave it at that.
Brightblade - June 16, 2007 02:55 AM (GMT)
I usually get the most expensive stuff as Christmas or Birthday gifts... at least I used to, when I first met my wife. :)
One year, I got Steel Battalion for Christmas. Another I got a gamecube. The first year we were together, she bought me a Dreamcast for my birthday... less than a month from launch. Of course, I had to marry her... how could I not?
So... technically, I don't pay crazy money for things... other people pay crazy money for my things. :)
I bought a Playstation when they were still $349... with my own monies. Hmmm... I paid retail for FF3(US) for SNES... which I think was like $70. I bought my 360 so I could play Dead Rising... so that game cost me $450ish... if you count it, cuz I'm still playing the 360... and NOT Dead Rising.

I was originally going to say the WSC version of FF3, then I saw Nintendo in your post so that wouldn't make much sense. The English translation of FF2 wouldn't make much sense either, since that ROM has already been released, so I'm going to guess the
early FF1 translation.
Now, to get on topic, I paid about $150 for my enamel navy DS Lite when they were first announced, then they raised the price to $200 once they were out because of limited supply, which I still think was worth it since the DS Lite is so much better than the original DS. My PS2 was probably more expensive though, I don't remember how much they were going for when I got it anymore.

what's the super secret vidya gaem
Marcelo X - January 30, 2009 05:27 PM (GMT)
lol, continued from 1.5 years ago :)
Honestly dude, it's not that big a deal to most, it's just really unexpected. I don't want to be a dick, but I really cant say. I have an agreement that I can't break.
Different game but same subject, I almost got my hands on the unreleased PC version of Final Fantasy V, but the guy was convinced that I'd release it online and tell people that he gave it to me. Damn I wish he would have trusted me...I wouldn't have burned him, but at least information on it would have been made available, like screenshots and differences, that's the most I would have done.
Collector - January 30, 2009 07:39 PM (GMT)
The unreleased PC version of 5 exists in a playable state? Now I am cry.
Is there really that much chance of them getting into legal trouble if these things made it onto the internet? Lots of unreleased games have shown up and I've never heard of anybody getting in trouble over it.
I know you can't break your agreement and wouldn't ask you to, but it would be cool if your source changed his mind eventually.
The Black Mage - January 30, 2009 08:46 PM (GMT)
Sonic prototypes get dumped every week, and I haven't heard a single problem with it, except when Sonic Advance 3 was leaked early, and even then, the employee didn't get fired.
Marcelo X - February 1, 2009 06:37 AM (GMT)
You're preaching to the choir, but he didn't feel that way and neither did the other guy.
I was offered a chance to play the FF5 PC one in person, but I couldn't afford the travel, especially just to play a game.
