***Sorry guys. This should have been under "battle reports." Can one of the mods/admins please move the thread? Thanks.***
Well, I participated in the first round of the Apocalypse Campaign this weekend at my local crack-supplier's store. I had never played anything with Apoc rules before, so this was a new experience for me (not that I've been playing 40k that long. :P )
The first installment was entitled "If It's Green, We Can Kill It."
The scenario basically had a table (any size) with "Orky" reinforced buildings. Since I missed out on the start of the "big" game, I ended up playing a single opponent with a 2000 point list.
He used a Witch Hunter/Space Marine force, and I played my Eldar.
WH won first turn. He deployed some infantry in a building and a Land Raider Crusader in the middle of the board. He then infiltrated some assassins.
I deployed a 5 Fire Prism Sunstorm squad, 3 Walkers, 1 Wraithlord, 9 Wraithguard with Spiritseer, Fire Dragons with Fuegan, and the Avatar.
First, he pretty much fired everything he had on the table at my Wraithguard and managed to knock 2 out.
I whiffed on my FP mondo-blast against his Crusader. I did manage to get a couple of hits on the tank to immobilize it though with my other units.
His Assassins were able to thin-out my Fire Dragons a bit, but I killed them off in CC when the Avatar joined the party. The Dragons and Avatar wrecked his Crusader next (after my FP shot whiffed again.)
The Wraithguard was trying to take out the infantry hanging out in the reinforced building, but they were struggling to gain any traction. I lost a couple more and was down to 6 + the Spiritseer.
With the Tank sitting there in a pool of molten metal, my FPs changed their focus and went after the building with the troops (since it was the only thing left to shoot at.) They scored a strength D hit and obliterated that thing. It was looking pretty bleak for the WH at that point with the only thing left on the board being his Techmarine that bailed-out of the Crusader.
He Finlay made his reserve roll and his Thunderhawk Bad-year blimp came in. He (wisely) threw everything he had at the Sunstorm Squadron taking out two of them and the prism cannon of another. It offloaded another squad of troops (giving me something else to shoot at) and taunted me a bit.
My Wraithlord got a bright lance hit on the gunship, but it only shook him. My two remaining prism cannons couldn't get the hit on the last turn.
In the end, he had his 1000-point Thunderhawk left and I had 3 Prisms, 2 Walkers, Wraithlord, a couple Wrathguard... So in the end, the result was a draw. <_<
Next time, I'll be sure I have a bit better grasp of the Apoc rules and play a bit smarter. The gunship was the difference-maker for him.
yeah im not to keen on the apocalypis game myself but as long as your having fun
its typical though isn't it. just when you think you have your opponent on the ropes the reserves come on and screw everything up.
Yeah, kind of...
I guess it was a double-edged sword.
He was a little miffed that his Thunderhawk didn't get into the fight until turn 4, but it probably saved his butt that way. If it had come in earlier, I would have had more chances to shoot it down.
As it was, he got one volley off and killed two of my five Prisms, but I still had Walkers with EMLs and a Wraithlord with Bright Lance blasting away at him. The Wraithlord got a glance on turn 5 and stunned him so he was pretty much ineffective the rest of the game, but he still got his points for it... so that was half the value of his whole army.
It was my first experience with Apoc, and it was interesting... even fun, but I do think there was a definite "This is muffed up" feel to the whole thing.
Oh well, I'm sure I'll play the other games in the campaign just for the heck of it.
