Well the latest issue of WD has GW's latest money grabbing scheme, apocalypse.
Its full of plenty of new box sets of many figures or tanks ranging in price up to the $800 mark. And im sure their target ordience has a few hundred dollars just floating around to spend on them.
i mean ive always wanted to be able to spend a huge amount of cash in one hit and then have about 100 unpainted models sitting on my desk waiting for me to paint them. Cause i have so much free time to paint.
then after spending weeks painting up everything, organising a game, only to watch as whatever big shell my opponent uses wipes out 30 models in one hit.
Now i know some people out there already have 4000pt + armies, so they can probably get started straight away.
So no im not all that impressed with apocalypse at all. its just another GW excuse to try and sell lots & lots of expensive stuff.
seeing how making games on a small scale dosen't make as much money ( i had a full chaos warmaster army for under $100) and we all know what happend to that gaming system (younger players will probably saying "warmaster never heard of it")
Will be good if a few players band together with the same army and go halves or thirds in a box set.
would like to here what other people think
( more ranting to come later)
I agree with some of what you said, and disagree with other parts. Apocalypse is just another money making scheme, and you need to spend nearly $150 AUS just for items such as the Rule Book and Superheavy dice and new templates. That's a lot of money and you don't even have an army to play with!
Secondly, with no structure to making lists without the FO chart, people can come up with unbalanced and rediculous lists like a Necron player not taking any Necrons! wtf?
Finally I hate the fact that certain armies are completely screwed over, like the Necrons. Apart from the Pylon and Monolith, the Necrons don't really have much that'll stand a chance in Apocalypse being a mostly troop orientated army. And GW didn't even release a Pylon, so players still have to go through Forge World.
All that said, I still liked the concept behind Apocalypse, and some of the new rules are kinda cool. I wouldn't mind constructing my own Reaver Titan or Super Heavy Eldar battle tanks to have a few games. I like the idea of complete chaos as a line of Imperialguard battle tanks try to stop some advancing titans, or large army of Terminators in Land Raiders bearing down to destroy a Necron Pylon.
It was cool concept, but poorly executed by GW. Players may as well just play Epic 40K.
Finally, as expensive as they are the large army boxes do give some players looking to start a new army additional options other than the Battle Force. Plus they can get units for slightly cheaper than they'd be individually. Eldar Spirit Host anyone?
Cal
yes some of the box sets are cheap and viable enough for people to get or go halves in, but not all.
but i will definately be getting the new necron lord with resurrection orb though.
but back in the herohammer days Iused to regually play 6-8000pt games, and they use to take a good full weekend to play.. so i doubt that apocalpyse will see any action at my games club. and while big games like this can be fun, you just seem to forget to much stuff and by the end you just cant be bothered.
This may account for my apathy reguarding "big" games of apocalypse, ive already done it and now prefer smaller. games.
ive talked to all players at the club and the only ones interested are all the under 13 crowd. which at that age is understandable, so we'll just have to wait and see how it pans out.
but for some ,like myself, i just have to many projects going to even consider buying more
and it took me ages to construct and paint 1 monolith i couldn't begin to imagine what id be like if i had to do 2 at once
(edit) yeah thats another reason im not to interested my necrons get screwed with it
well how greedy is games workshop getting now
they are already releasing ANOTHER apocalypse rule book to co-inside with the 40k rule book release.
