So yet another installment of the Ciphas Cain series has hit the shelfs and been read by yours truely. Like all the other books in the series, the Hero (or not) of the Imperium is back and facing Tyraninds, a Rogue Inquisitor, and a Rogue Techpriest. And all with the help of his phlagmatic aid Jurgen, and the lovely Inquisitor Vail.
So, anyone other than me read this yet?
I can definately recomend forking over the dinero on this and all the others.
Heya Eagle,
My first introduction to Caiphas' saga was"Caves of Ice" and I loved the fact that there was room for this sort of Flashmanesque character in the 40th millenium. I am a fan of most of the 40k novels, or at least will give 'em a go (Last Chancers series stunk tho' IMHO)
I have every one of the Cain books, the omnibus "Hero of the imperium", "Death or Glory" (My personal fave, Sandy Mitchell writes Orks very well.) and the latest? "Duty calls" I liked "Duty Calls" but feel that the tyranids are a hard enemy to write about as they are portrayed as a rather anonymous wave of chitin and teeth, with a rather obvious method of attack i.e. charge the meat things. Sandy Mitchell has done 'nids before and well, but this time they seemed a bit passe. Perhaps due to the emphasis on the rogue Techpriest, by far the most intriquing bit of the novel, as it linked to events in the valley of the Daemons in "Death or Glory"
Still I have a soft spot for Cain and Jurgen and Amberely and will happily devour the next installment. I would like to read of some different enemies, like Dark/Bright Eldar, or more on the Chaos marines, anyway that seems likely as Cain was brought out of retirement for the 13th Black Crusade.
These books are great for a change of pace from the unrelenting grimness of the majority of the rest of the works set in the 40k future.
