Title: Forsaken

Nothing compared to our good Cal, but hey, might be good for making your eyes bleed. <_<

Demios Primus: 193M41 Standard 122
They were considered by many even in their own outfit to be scum, the worst of the worst. Not that any of them would contradict the statement. They were founded from the dregs of their regiment, the criminals that all regiments have. By all rights they should have been in a penal legion, and if not for their Generals orders, they’d already be in one.

Taking a drag from his hand rolled lho stick, Hara contemplated all of this, and much more. As he held the toxic smoke in his lungs, he wondered about the data slate that he had been given a few days ago. Exhaling the bluish smoke he wondered again about the events of the past few days.

The general had called him to a private dinner in one of Hyrus Secondus’ best rated restaurant, automatically raising as many red flags as his brain could manage. The General had been in full dress fatigues, the lush deep black satin coat and pants with the dark blue piping of the colours of the Akiran force stationed around the Hyrus system. The polished silver of his buttons glared bright even in the dimmed lighting of the restaurant.

“Come, have a seat. We have much to discuss.” the General had told him, not getting up. “Try the grox tenderloin, I’ve been told it’s the best in the sector.”

The tone he used there should have been enough to send Hara running screaming all the way into the Eye of Terror itself to get away from the General. But he’d stayed, for some reason, though he’d never been known for his respect towards his superior officers before, a fact that the General knew well.

“Thank you General, it isn’t every day that one of us Forsaken gets a dinner invitation to one of the best restaurants on the planet.” He said as a lovely redhead with flowing curls came over and offered him and the General a menu.
His gaze lingered for a little too long watching her leave, and the General cleared his throat to bring Hara’s attention back to him. “I received a very interesting message about your today.”

“Oh?” Hara inquired, slowly turning his head back to the General, cocking his eyebrow and peering mercilessly into the General’s bright green eyes. “And what did they get caught doing this time?” He inquired as he casually pulled a lho stick from his pack in his beast pocket, lighting it in a smooth motion.

It was all the General could do to stifle a laugh at this comment. He was well aware of Hara and his team’s record of infractions and crimes. The Emperor’s Forsaken had been his idea. He liked having a force of expendable criminal soldiers under his command and not in some penal legion. They were the very best and brightest of the bottom of the bucket. They had already proven their worth after successfully completing many missions that would have proven disastrous for a full scale military sortie.

“Absolutely nothing. You know that I don’t even read those things anymore, I just delete them. Actually, it seems that your teams fame have become a little more wide spread than we knew” The general said as he produced a data slate seemingly out of thin air. “This is for you and your team, you have new orders.”

Ahhh, Hara thought, it’s a business dinner. “Well, at least I get a dinner this time. Last time we were just dragged out of our beds and marched off into another hell-hole.” He said, his grey eyes gazing like daggers at the General. “I believe at your personal orders, correct?”

At this the General couldn’t help but laugh. “Now you know that your only alive and still breathing that toxic filth of yours because of my own good graces.” He said with a smile. “But now it seems that you’ve been,” be paused, furrowing his brow, thinking of a delicate way of putting his news, “commandeered from my services.” He finished, pushing the data slate across the table to Hara.

Hara looked from the slate back to the General. “So that’s the reason you sent for me? Is this to be a going away dinner before my team and I are taken off to Persyium?” He winced slightly at speaking the name of the closest hellish penal world. Ice crept into his voice as he said “After everything that we’ve done for you, all the hell we’ve been through, you’re breaking off our agreement? Well, I guess I should have expected this kind of gratitude from you Leam.”

Just then the waitress returned to take their orders, but this time Hara’s eyes remained as if glued there, to the Generals. Their icy nature had little affect on the General. After the waitress left, the General responded. “Now after our long and productive relationship you know that there’s nothing I’d do to get rid of you, you’re just too bloody useful. Maybe you should take a look at the data slate.” He said with a smirk.

Hara turned his icy gaze to the slate. The more he read the more the ice in his gaze turned to disbelief. When he’d read enough to understand what was going on, he turned back to the General. “You can’t be serious.” was all he could manage.

After a moment of thoughtful silence the General said “I’m afraid that there’s nothing I can do. You saw the authorization. You’re the property of the God-Emperors Inquisition now.” The general finished just as the redhead brought them their grox tenderloin with mushrooms.

She looked at Hara and said “Are you alright? You look a little ill darlin’.”

“I’ll be fine.” Was all Hara could think to say, adding a courtesy “Thank you.”

She winked at him and then was gone, leaving the two men at the table alone.

The rest of the evening had been pleasant enough, even though they avoided the subject at hand to a point where it was almost painful for them. Finishing the night with a wonderful desert of gargant berry flan with a remarkable cream sauce, the two parted with little more than a good-bye.

Three days had passed since then but it was all still very troubling to him. The Inquisition? The very thought of it still sent an icy shiver running down his spine. What could they possibly want with a ragtag bunch of misfits, even one as productive as his? He still hadn’t found the right way or moment to confront his team with the news.

“Is everything ok?” drifted a voice out of the darkness.

Hara took another drag from his lho stick and turned to face the intruder to his thoughtful solitude. “I’m fine Root.” He said to the stunning beauty that moved silent enough that even his alert ears hadn’t detected her approach. “Just lost in a little thought, s’all.”

She reached up a patted him on the shoulder. “You know that you should leave the thinking up to those that are better able to deal with the stress of it than you” she said with a smirk. Even he wasn’t able to hold back a smile at that. She always had a remarkable way of making him feel better, even though to an outsider listening to their usual conversations would have thought they hated one another by the way they talked to each other. “Anything I can help with?”

“Well…” he began, deciding there wasn’t much of a better time than now to break the news to her. “We’ve got new orders, we leave in three weeks.” He said in his normal businesslike tone that he got when disbursing orders.

She could tell that he was holding something back, so asked “What’s wrong with that? We get new orders almost every week. What’s the mission this time? Assassination? Seek and destroy? I’ve never seen you look like this over a set of orders, what’s really going on?” Even in the dim light he could see the concern wash over her electric blue eyes.

He leaned down and kissed her forehead gently. “It’s an escort mission. We have to protect our charge through his mission. We’re going along as a sort of…” he paused, unsure of how to phrase it, “hired muscle.”

“Oh?” She said, still peering into his eyes. “And what, exactly, is this charges name?”

He steeled himself for the recoil of the information he was about to give her, sure that it would have a similar effect on her that it had on him. “His name is Logan Grey. Inquisitor Logan Grey.”

She just stood there for a moment before drawing a lho stick from the breast pocket of her webbing. He brought his own lighter out and lit it for her. She took a deep inhale and stood for another few seconds before responding. “Oh,” She said, blowing a ring of bluish smoke into the night, “Well this could get interesting.”

He exhaled a smoky sigh of relief. That had gone better than he had expected. He had thought that even as stoic and hard as she usually appeared, that she’d break down into a fit of hysterics.

“Have you told any of the others yet?” she asked, instantly aware of why he’d been distant these past few days.

“No. I don’t know how to break it to them.” He said a little sadly.

She merely nodded. He wasn’t normally one who had trouble breaking anything to their little close-knit family, but then again, this wasn’t their normal little type of deadly mission. They’d all heard the tales of the Inquisition. They all knew what was going to happen. There was no doubt that any of them would manage to live through the end of this tale.

“Well, you’ll tell them tomorrow, after the hell that you’ve put yourself through these past few days, I know just what will make you feel better.” She said with a wink as she grasped his hand and led him off towards her chambers.

“Always remember that your not alone, I’ll always be here” she had whispered right before she fell asleep in his arms. He couldn’t help but wonder for how long. He didn’t think that the service of the Inquisition left for a long life span. He looked down at her sleeping form, her hair, dark as the midnight sky, lay over her forehead. He brushed it aside and kissed her on the forehead again before allowing himself to drift off into a fitful slumber, the first he’d managed in the past three days. Tomorrows going to be a hell of a day, he thought as everything went black.
