Title: Advice Needed..
Description: Necrons, or Eldar?
Calaith - December 13, 2006 05:45 AM (GMT)
Hi guys,
I have my birthday tommorrow (yay!), but aren't getting anything because my parents are buying me a video camera to shoot my own films, and a MP3 player of some sort. This means I have to buy all my own Warhammer myself, which isn't a problem because I got a lot of money off friends and family.
But I have a dilema! I have a little over one hundred to spend (which is a lot to me, ok?) which gives me the following choices. A) Two boxes of Dire Avengers to get my Eldar army going, or a box of Dire Avengers and a box of Rangers. B) 6 Immortals (to make a squad of eight with my two current Immortals) and a Heavy destroyer, or two heavy Destroyers an only 3 Immortals to make a squad of 6. C) A box set of Dire Avengers or Rangers, and either 3 Immortals or a Heavy Destroyer or two.
There are my choices. Now for the main dilema. I can't get both, I don't have enough funds and I need money going into the new year. If I go with the Dire Avengers, I will have the troops choices I require for my Eldar army, which origionally was built up purely of aspects. If I don't go with the Immortals however, my Necron army will still have very little life in it, consisting of warriors, two lords and few half attempted units here and there. The army can't go over 1250 at the moment.
So should I go with the Avengers and have the troops choices required, though my current oponents don't mind me still using aspects for the time being? Or should I go with the Immortals, knowing that though small, my Necron army is at least legally usable? Or should I go half and hlaf, and get myself enough Immortals to get a squad, and get one box set of Dire Avengers (meaning two troops choices of 5)
The other thing is I'm the kind of painter who is really inconsistent. I may one month start painting like crazy, and paint entire squads in a couple of weeks. (like when I painted my first Necrons like a mad man) If I go with a whole bunch of Dire Avengers at once, I may not paint them all for some time.

I recon you should get a box of Avengers and Rangers to make your Eldar legal. Then I'd use any left over funds to assist your Necrons. For the necrons, unless you can get enough Immortals for a decent unit, you probably should go for heavy destroyers, that way you will be getting models that arn't going to be nigh redundant until you get further money.

I agree get the eldar that gives you 2 legal armies
more fun and varity
also rangers are great figures and very different to paint than dire avengers so thats good i get a bit bored painting masses of the same figure
(my wraithguard are slowly driving me insane despite a few banenr carriers)

Being a Necron player, and knowing how important Morty's are to a strong list I would get ...."enough Immortals to get a squad, and get one box set of Dire Avengers (meaning two troops choices of 5)"

Two things.
Within the Dire Avenger box there are ten legs and 12 torsos. Unlike the guardians, the legs are one piece except for the butt of the model which is connected to one of the Dire Avenger towel clothe thingies. It you use two pairs of guardian legs it is possible to make two squads of six, each with a tooled up exarch.
Despite that, I wouldn't recommend two squads to Avengers that small for Cal. In games 750 points or smaller, maybe, but in anything larger they would both get singled out and killed very quickly, and their own effectiveness on the enemy is impared. I think Cal needs to have two decent troop choices because otherwise he's going to find that his Eldar will over two troops point sinks, and his necrons will have a minimum strength squad which in larger games isn't going to be that effective (yes, I understand that Immortals are kick-arse, but a squad of five in larger games won't be that great).
Also, I'm saying this from an unbiased standpoint. No matter how much I dread facing a full unt of those Immortals with my Guard, it isn't affecting my advice.

well I've still decided to get the Immortals and a box of Avengers. For the reason that I can make those two troop choices, and who's to say I can't keep them together and fire at the same target?
The reasons are I desperately want to expand my Necrons as well as my Eldar, 6 Immortals or 2 Heavy Destroyers (my two choices) are not minimum squad sized, and the fact that they are both T5 and have WBB more than makes up for their lack of numbers.

Cool. The beauty of the Dire avenger box is you get two of every exarch weapon. So you can equip both squads with the same exarch weaponry, or a mixture.

go with the Immortals. hvy destroyers are not worth it. I won't get off topic and go into why, but as you are still building your Necron army, the Immortals are a better choice for the size army you have now.

strange i always found immortals to be over priced in both senses and too slow and costly while hv destroyers being fast and nasty make superb tank killers and termie killers , a lot of armies i know will sit back and blast your necrons on the way in with longer range guns or most dangerously pie plate throwers for this hv destroyers work great

Avengers and Immortals so you can get them on the table quicker.

Well I'm back, as is obvious.
I went with a box of Avengers and 6 Immortals. As is evident my wallet took a bruising. :P But it was all christmas and birthday money, so I was able to spend it on the hobby guilt free.
I've assembled 7 Avengers thus far, 5 normal and 2 Exarch's. One has the two shuriken catapults and looks like he's armed to the teeth. The other is lunging forward with the spear.
I've only assembled one Immortal, but the others aren't far behind.
Thanks for the advice guys. I think I went with the right decision.
