Title: Favourite Craftworld?
Description: and why?
Calaith - March 9, 2006 06:45 AM (GMT)
Seeing as we need our members count to go up, I thought I'd break the ice on this forum with an obvious question.
What is your favourit Craftworld and why? Is it the tactics and the way it plays? The background story of the Craftworld? Or is it the general look of the army?
My favourit would have to be the Craftworld of Beil-Tan, mostly for its tactics, but also for its fluff and colour scheme. I first started the Craftworld when I saw it in White Dwarf issue 237, which was actually my brothers magazine at the time. I immediately fell in love with the background of the court of a yong king, Avatar of Khaine, and the Aspect warriors. Also being the first craftworld i saw I was ignorant to the fact that there were more untill it was sort of too late, but I never regret my decision.
I also love the way it handles on the battle field, and playing with that force solely for 3 years you tend to learn a thing or two about how to use it. My particularly favourit unit would be the Banshees, but I also like Reapers (who doesn't against SM?) and Scorpions. I also love the transport tanks, and the mobility they gave my force was fantastic as I was always the one who got to pick the fight. I almost fell over when I found out they were bringing out a Wave Serpent model that you didn't have to order over the Internet.....it still isn't painted...
I also chose Beil-Tan because I hated painting/playing with guardians. So repetative and so many to paint, and they had to get so close to be of any affect only to be charged and wiped out the next turn. <_<
Anywho, enough of my animated speech on the Beil-Tan, whats your favourit Craftworld and why?
Death Jester 929 - March 10, 2006 04:31 AM (GMT)
well, i had a small run a couple years back with eldar. when i was really young. Then i was out of 40k for a couple years, and i just got back into tau about 3 years ago. But back when i was like... what 9? there was a craftworld in "design" that never made it through because the rules were too drasticly changing the gameplay. They were called the Pyte'Ray craftworld. They were insanly fun and they could greatly inflict extreme damage or be extremely damaged based on who got the first turn of the battle.
They were a sort of Eldar quick action craftworld. The entire army could come in deep strike if the mission allowed it and they had a very confusing version of orbital bombardment. you can see why they were labeled as drastically changing the eldar gameplay. They just felt like an entirly different army. They also had Tiger aspect warriors, which had to be converted but i just used some squarpion models cus they looked similar. and i painted them orange and black.
Anyway, they were in the "making" for about a year then kinda phased out. so i stopped playing and got back in with the Tau. But they were my favorite. because the game commensed so fast with them.
Calaith - March 10, 2006 05:18 AM (GMT)
Thats really interesting, thanks for sharing that. I wonder how many other Craftworlds didn't make it through the design process...
Cal
krazyboris - March 10, 2006 07:24 AM (GMT)
well, id imagine that there are quite a few that didnt make it. Besides, you can pretty much create your own craftworld, as it is only limited by your imagination (and of course wether people will allow your house rules ;) ) and creating the background can be a really fun process!
Brak'hir - March 24, 2006 05:45 AM (GMT)
Even though i dont play eldar, ulthwe have always been my favourite........
Death jester..... Thats pretty cool, im gonna see if i can find anything else about these Pyte'Ray guys.......

Alaitoc all the way :ph43r: love the effectiveness, fluff, and feel for the craftworld and will be restarting my alaitoc force when the new codex comes out provided a similar army is still available
Those Pyte'Ray sound fascinating though, may have to hunt for some stuff on other craftworlds in general
Calaith - March 26, 2006 07:10 AM (GMT)
Hi Ciartan, welcome to the site. I find the fluff behind the Alaitoc very interesting as well, and love the ideas of the wanderers who travel that galaxy and witnessed pretty much all there is to witness. I personaly don't think I could field them though...rangers aren't as efficient as Reapers in my experience.
As to researching stuff on other Craftworlds, please feel free to post links to house rules Craftworlds and stuff like that that you might find on the net. Not all are going to be balanced, but it would still be interesting to discuss them and see how they fair in battle.
Cheers, Calaith

Can I say the one I don't like?
All of the above... ... ...
*Sigh...*
Being an 'everything but Eldar' player... ... ...
Meaphet Ran - April 3, 2006 02:21 AM (GMT)
id have to say alaitoc, i just love the disruption table
Chivi'queleste - April 23, 2006 10:32 PM (GMT)
What I like least, is the number of inducted civilians (Guardians) and 'undead' constructs that seem to make the majority of Eldar armies. Shouldn't these be reserved more for specific scenarios?
What I like most, is the theme of elite warriors, devoted to their specific discipline, striking where least expected/most feared with a speed that can't be bettered. Mechanized Biel-tan for me.
Reaper - April 27, 2006 05:50 AM (GMT)
i like the Alaitoc craftworld the best, mostly because of it's list, i just love the extra 2 troops choices and ranger disruption. Although fluffwise i probably prefer Ulthwe or Biel-Tan, they are much more exciting than Alaitoc is
Inquisitor Liechtenstein - April 28, 2006 05:55 AM (GMT)
I seem to have forgotten to comment about a month ago when I happened to vote in this pole... <_<
Anyway, I prefer Ulthwe for Two distinct reasons. Firstly, the Seer Counsil, my favourite unit. This is more than enough for almost anything that can be thrown at it, and it looks sooo cool. Secondly, since collecting Ulthwe, I've developed an immense like for Guardians, even if they're not Black ones.
Meaphet Ran - April 28, 2006 11:51 AM (GMT)
mmm seer councils possibly a bigger target than a monolith
Inquisitor Liechtenstein - April 28, 2006 12:20 PM (GMT)
The beauty of this is that the Seer Council are able to absorb massive amounts of firepower, so if they are targeted, then the rest of you army gets to where it needs to be more intact than it would have previously.
Reaper - April 28, 2006 12:46 PM (GMT)
i've never used a seer council before but i can only imagine their power, but i love guardians too, they're so under-rated but i've had mine kill terminator squads :D
Inquisitor Liechtenstein - April 28, 2006 12:58 PM (GMT)
Mine havn't done quite that well, but whenever I vs Eldar, I ALWAYS do my best to avoid getting a full blast from a large squad of Defenders.
Reaper - April 28, 2006 01:55 PM (GMT)
yeah i love a full blast, most squads can't stand up to 32 shots of shuriken death :D
Calaith - April 28, 2006 11:40 PM (GMT)
Well, after alot of practice playing against Inquisitor Lictenstein's Ulthwe', I have learn't not to target the seer council too early.
Besides, its alot funner getting a few shots into his guardians and watching the est of the squad flee of the board. The only annoying thing is that the Seercouncil just boosts all the squads around them, and has an bad habit of mind waring evything important they come into range of. (Which is quite far considering augment.)
Inquisitor Liechtenstein - April 29, 2006 12:40 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I'm really unlcky when it comes to taking my moral checks (hence, my embolden warlock is always the secondlast one to die if I can help it {generally the Enhance one survives longer}).
Reaper - April 29, 2006 10:46 AM (GMT)
i personally think my dice are cursed, i don't just role low, i just role badly, low on most things high on leadership tests and such, i am currently on a 3 game streak of failing all of asurmen's armour saves, i mean i can't even make 3+ saves :(
Meaphet Ran - April 29, 2006 01:37 PM (GMT)
i fight for the dice god (for those who dont know the ctan are the dice gods) so i roll extremely well, my 3 favourite moments playing 40k having a single tomb spider cut through 20 marines without loosing a wound (he also went through almost 50 guardsmen a game later) rolling 8WBB rolls and passing them all, and in a 10000 pt aside game having 4 wraith hold of around 40+ marines without loss for 3 turns (6 rounds of combat) and then they all died the very next turn
Commissar-Craig - April 30, 2006 01:36 AM (GMT)
Iyanden because there story line is awsome, that & Wraith models look cool.
Reaper - April 30, 2006 04:49 AM (GMT)
yeah iyanden are pretty cool, i would be tempted to collect an army from them if i had a swimming pool of money, smoked money and used money for clothing, yes i believe that's how much they cost
Chivi'queleste - April 30, 2006 08:52 PM (GMT)
I'm thinking that an Iyanden force would drive me to learn casting and sculpting on my own.
Calaith - May 10, 2006 07:21 AM (GMT)
lol. I actually believe that a Saim-Hann army list would probably cost more though....given you could buy the Battle force and get a nice core (Falcon, three Jetbikes, a Vyper.) But if you planned to play with mostly bikes you could only really buy them one at a time as well. Given, you have the option of buying Vypers instead, but their not cheap.
Cheers, Cal
Reaper - May 10, 2006 12:19 PM (GMT)
yes, but wouldn't a saim-hann list be more expensive pointswise? (don't have my codex handy), therefore causing you to buy less models?
Chivi'queleste - May 10, 2006 02:45 PM (GMT)
Yeah, the Saim Hann army would be quite a bit smaller. But they look incredibly cool.
Kyng - November 24, 2006 01:44 AM (GMT)
Saim-Hann it is what I think eldar are meant to be and that is fast, fast, fast, fast. Get in and out before your enemy knows what hit them.
Hardrainfalling - December 10, 2006 01:44 PM (GMT)
Iyanden , i have always loved the fluff and the idea of ghost walker army , silent killers and lost souls dragged backed inoto the world of the living to fight for their race.
luckily we got a fantastic new wraithlord fig and yriel shame no new wraithguard which must be the oldest figure in serivce as a potental troop choice and the most expanesive unit ££ at a staggering £80 for a unit plus warlock
Prince Oryalis - July 11, 2007 04:55 PM (GMT)
Mine is beil tann because i like the idea that they are a mainly warrior craftworld B) :ph43r: B)
darthken - September 21, 2007 02:35 PM (GMT)
Well as ive just started elder after ruthlessly taking slaves across the galaxy with my dark elder.
Im going to pick the craftworld that took my eye from the start Ulthwe'.
Im looking forward to actually being able to use psykers
InquisitorMatticus - October 24, 2007 03:16 AM (GMT)
Saim-hann would have to be my favorite. Jetbikes are awesome!! Also i just like the color scheme.
Farseer Eldas - November 7, 2007 06:36 AM (GMT)
my favourite (apart from my own) is Altansar, the craftworld that the fluff of mine is based off.
Spacefrisian - November 7, 2007 03:55 PM (GMT)
I go for ulthwe not only the fluff but also its characters. (and the Strike force they once had before gw did something terrible)
DarthIbis - January 15, 2008 02:12 PM (GMT)
I picked Alaitoc, but my choice is based purely on superficial reasons of liking the color scheme (as a contrast on the shelf to my Dark Angles green) and that I like to field Pathfinders as my troop units.
I had not yet developed the 40k addiction when the 3e Craftworld Codex was in use (but I do have a copy for the fluff and pictures.)
I do like Biel-Tan for their warriors and Iyanden because of the Wraithguard.
mellchia - March 7, 2008 06:40 PM (GMT)
I have always had Iyanden at the heart. Especially when you could buy the old board game, Defense of Iyanden (or something like that)...
All the CW are good. Each is limiting in some form or way that creates a unique diversity on the table-top games.
If I had one at the bottom, it would be Ulthwe. I had a disdain for Eldrad when I first started playing, 12 years ago.
DarthIbis - March 7, 2008 07:25 PM (GMT)
If I could find the models (and not break the bank) I would totally field a Wraithguard (as troop) army with Wraithlord support.
<---- The Prince can lead the way.
mellchia - March 7, 2008 08:41 PM (GMT)
That too... the fluff for Yriel was amazing. In 2nd ed, I had an Iyanden list using Eldar Pirates, Guardians, and Wraithguard and Dreadnoughts.
Amazing. Now they use an Autarch...
Ogma Cermait - August 9, 2008 02:33 PM (GMT)
To cut a very long story short, I came to 40k because my son fell so in love with Dawn of War that he has become obsessed with raising a Chaos Space Marine army.
I came to Eldar because, after initially opting to become one, said pride of my eye has forsaken them. I have long hankered after them - especially Harlis - so after flirting with the notions of Orkies & CSMs (Alpha Legion specifically), I started playing Eldar in that game and found myself simply loving the whole Eldar theme.
I came to Altansar because I was meant to. We fiddle around quite a bit with the paint option on that game, and one that I drew up featured rich red body armour, black helmets, and bone weaponry (that last bit being the only difference between GW's Altansar and where I will be going with my visual themes). When I played that scheme in DoW, it looked simply amazing on screen, so I plan to now use it on my Altansarian hosts.
Ironically, I bought a Maugan Ra mini way back when it was first released, so it looks like I shall be finally able to actually paint it up and use it in an appropriate context.
Just as Sain-Hann is perceived by the other Craftworlds as being somewhat barbarous because it was the first to abandon the old Elven worlds, so I see Altasar as being looked on in a similar manner due to their being the last, and therefore carrying strong suspicions of being tainted.
As I am doing the army of a 'barbarous' Craftworld, who wear red and black, I voted SH here.
(And yes, that is the short version.)
Calaith - August 11, 2008 12:46 AM (GMT)
Probably should have included an 'Other' option when making this post.
Interesting to note somebody being brought into the game by their son, not the more common vice versa :)
Cheer,
Cal
