They're contests held across the boards. Some of them are deckbuilding contests, some are guess the art, some are other random stuff.

I submitted a deck for kedi's casual contest.
I tried my hand at the lightning round of the cropped art contest (and got a whopping 1 right) but lost. My knowledge of obscure pirate cards is next to none.
