Title: Warm Weather
Jenn - May 11, 2005 08:44 AM (GMT)
It's been really nice these last few days and it's also been rather hot in Wrigley's room. I've been using a fan in his room to help keep him cool, but I was wondering if anyone has anymore suggestions? I've heard of filling bottles with water and freezing them, which I plan to do when it gets hotter. I'm just worried because Wrigley's room happens to be one of the rooms that gets coldest in the winter and hottest in the summer...even with the air conditioner on.
Okay, that's all...I feel like I post too much. LOL

I've used the frozen water bottles, but be sure to wrap them in an old t-shirt or towel (they tend not to like laying on the wet plastic). On hot days, my bunnies will be flopped on top of them.
Also, laying a damp, cold towel over the top of his cage will help to keep inside the cage cool.

If your rabbit is known to chew on things and eat towels/t-shirts, then never wrap a water bottle in one or cover the cage with one. Towels are dangerous because they can cause blockages with ingested. I just put the frozen water bottle in without anything on it and my boys don't seem to care, they lay all over it.

Thanks Emily and MBB. :D
Wrigley is a big chewer so I don't think I would be able to wrap the water bottles, but because his cage is so tall I could probably put a cold towel over his cage. I don't think there is any way he would be able to reach it. ;)

Good point, MBB. My buns are not chewers, and with Rex's thin fur, the bottle is too cold (not to mention the condensation makes his fur wet and it tends to come off  )
Jenn, the wet towel thing does work really well, in conjunction with a fan. And in addition to the water bottles, you could also add some squares of ceramic tile for him to lay on :)

My boys are both chewers, expecially Spice, so I'm cautious about this things lol.
The ceramic tile is probably a good idea! As long as it's in the shade it should stay cool. Not only that, it's heavy so they can't toss it and it's easy to clean.

Yes, I got the idea from Pet Bunny (to give credit where credit is due) B)

This is a great thread! I'm going to put it up as a sticky!
I love the wet towel idea, but again, be sure you know your bunny well before doing it. If you cannot do that I would put some icewater or a large block of ice in a pan in front of a fan (make sure the fan cannot tip into the water of course) and that might help cool the room as well.

When it gets so hot that the water can't keep even the slightest bit cool, I put the small ice chip pieces from the tray into their water. This doesn't actually make the water ice cold (my boys will not drink ice cold water) but it does keep it cool so they drink a little more (a least mine do, LOL).

Aww.. thanks Emily.

Lucky we have air conditioning, but we also have portable air purifers that we can put near by.
Clean air and a breeze....

If your bunny seems to be really hot (heavy breathing or streched out) you can spray their ears or wet them with a damp towel. :)

i used big Ice Blocks for Missey.. she loved those on hot days she'd lay right next to it or put her front paws on it.. after the big ice blocks started to become a lot of money we would cut the top off of milk jugs and freeze the waterthat way and then cut the outside of the jug and put the block in her cage.. it'd last all day!
ILoveNepo - May 14, 2005 11:04 PM (GMT)
Didn't the ice cubes get stuck to her fur? lol I give Nepo frozen water bottles and he scratches and bites and licks them lol. And he also flops on them! :P

I was just wondering what the weather has been like where you all live? How have your bunnies been dealing with it?
Wrigley is an indoor bunny, but it still gets rather hot in his room even with the air conditioner on. I also have a fan in his room that has a timer. I've noticed that the hotter it is if he runs around a lot that his nose tends to get wet. Is that normal? It usually dries off once he has calmed down.
It's been in the mid 90's these last few days!
