Title: **Help please**
Love4Lops - April 14, 2007 02:36 PM (GMT)
Hi everyone,
Just a little bit ago my dad and I found a (wild) baby-young (not very small, but definitely not an adult) rabbit in our backyard. It barely moves. It's heart rate feels steady and normal, but it's skin is loose and I can feel its ribs if I press gently (FYI ~ I did wear latex gloves while checking it, so everyone knows!), so I'm wondering if it is a matter of starvation. It keeps its eyes almost closed except for when it is handled, and then it starts to move a bit, but it can't hop or walk really. Its keeping itself in a curled up position, but has moved its neck to the proper position so I know it does not have wry neck. There is no apparent nasal or eye discharge or wounds from a predator, so I'm thinking it is probably malnourished/underfed so that is why it's so weak.
There are no close animal rehabs, and we can't get through to the vets, although I doubt they would see it anyway as its mainly a dog/cat office. I would try to buy some kitten milk replacement and give it this, but I don't want it to drown if it gets caught in its lungs.
Any info would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!
EDIT: X-that, I don't think it's underfed anymore - well, at least my dad doesn't. It's showing a little movement now, if I set it down it tumbles on its side and can barely situate itself properly, and when it does get situated it always holds its neck to the side, so I'm wondering if maybe it is developing wry neck? I just don't know...again, any tips/help would be great. :)

I think it's too late to save the little guy and if he was still saveable there would still be a small chance of him surviving anyway.. sorry to sound negative :(

Wish I could help you.. But the Little bunny I had was filled with Maggots. It was being Eaten alive..seriously. So we just overdosed it with Aspirins to kill it.
Maybe look up wry neck and the symptoms. See if that's that.

Thanks for the replies Rabbitrae and Cinn :)
The good news is we found out that a vet office I shadowed at one time has an Ohio Wildlife Center-thing conjoined with it, so we brought the bunny there. The lady said it was probably a spinal injury or something, and another animal may have gotten to him and they would look for puncture wounds. When I left, they were warming him up because he was cold. I'm so glad that I have a wildlife center so close though! If the bunny has any chance of survival, a rehabilitator is of course its best bet.
So thanks again, and everyone please keep baby bunny in your thoughts/prayers! :happybun:

Sounds like something hurt it. I hope they can find out.
Sadly they do have a lot of those problems. Cloverbunny was a miracle I think.
Something someone recently told me (FOR FUTURE HEALTH ISSUES) is that you can take the cecals if you have any in the pans/trays that anyone doesn't eat, put them in a baggie and save them - if you have any babies that aren't thriving or find a baby that needs help - they can eat them. That's what our rehab people do.
WOOOPSIE - THAT WAS ME< BO > I didn't see that I was on Lex's name

This year we didn't have that many wild rabbits around. I might see an odd one here and there, but that would be about it. It was a harsh winter, and there have been coyotes around. We just got use to so many rabbits last year, that it seems like there isn't any this year.
Pebbles never leaves cecals for me. :P
