Title: My Vet
Description: aaargh!!!
bunnee mom - January 16, 2007 10:43 PM (GMT)
I think my vet has lost her mind or something.
As some of you may know I've just had a tough time with Ellie, but I think we dodged the bullet this time and she seems to be fine. I took her back to Vet #1 (the one that misdiagnosed her) just to make sure her ears were still OK. It's only been a week since we had her at the Emergency Animal Hospital.
When Vet #1 was reading thru the report sent to her by the Hospital she shook her head and said rabbits very rarely have ear problems and when they start rolling around on the floor and tipping their head to one side it's generally a sign of a BRAIN PROBLEM!!!! I didn't even say anything....how ridiculous!! Then she proceeded to tell me that we should consider having blood work done on Ellie ($110) to find out what's really going on.
The only thing I am concerned about right now is that Ellie has gone from weighing 6.2# to 4.3#. That's a 20% weight loss...and that is not good. Granted, she has not been feeling well. I"m going to watch her closely the next couple weeks and see if she puts the weight back on. The vet said I could give her unlimited pellets and hay.

When rabbits head tilts too the side then they begin too roll its called headtilt,or wry neck,It may be caused by an inner ear infection or a parasite, information about this may be found on Barbi Browns Rabbitry website.bluebird

WHAT IS WRY NECK?
It is an immune disorder caused by a tremendously opportunistic protozoa (microsporidia) that resides primarily in the kidneys in many (if not all rabbits) and when the immune system is compromised the parasite replicates ( by injecting spores through a polar filament into the host cells) and begins to migrate from the kidney through the blood stream to any organ in the body but most commonly the brain where it develops cysts on the brain. Another common dpoesitory is the eye which results in a chronic weepy eye. I believe that the location of the cysts on the brain causes a variety of symptoms and the severity thereof.

This was 'quoted' directly from
Barbi Brown's website. So Wry Neck can/will affect the brain.

I would be a bit concerned with her comment that "RARELY" they get this. That's one of the most common things that happens..... Back injury is probably the worst..... I'm just guessing.
Bo might go to the vet today. He's holding an ear down a lot. I'm watching him for a bit and I'll phone them when they open.

Bluebird and DA....just to clarify, the comment I made about my vet was because she implied that Ellie had something more serious than just an ear infection, and I should consider another round of expensive tests to find out. When I searched on the internet, it's very common for rabbits to have an ear problem and get misdiagnosed!! I know that wry neck is alot more serious, but I don't think she has that at all.
Bo...I hope Bo is ok and just has an itchy ear :)
Ellie seems to be fine now and she is not tilting her head at all *keeping fingers crossed*.

Actually wry neck is called torticollis, which literally means "twisted neck."
It is a SYMPTOM of an illness, infection, injurry or disease, or parasite not an actual illness in it's self.
I think THis is where People get confused. so it can be caused by any number of things, just certain people tend to think it is only caused by what maybe they have seen most, even though it can be a symptom of many things.
Some people and vets are just narrow minded and think it can only be caused by one thing and one thing only, because maybe that is the most common, the only think they personally have seen, or maybe the only thing they have read about.
take it from a mum who has had a bun live through it, got it when he was 4 going on 5 now he's nearly 8. there are far to many people who don't know squat about it.
Paws crossed it's the ears, as that sure is possible, and that they fully clear up.
