Title: Prayers for Ellie please
Description: she's very sick

bunnee mom - January 3, 2007 01:35 AM (GMT)
I just got back from the vet. They are keeping her overnight and maybe tomorrow night because there is a large mass in her stomach.

As far as I could tell, she hadn't eaten anything for 2 days and it didn't look like she was really going to the bathroom. The vet was glad I brought her in right away. Her vital signs are good so she's hoping Ellie will be able to pass whatever is in her stomach. I'm guessing it's probably carpeting from when she was digging in the basement last week.

Please send Ellie good thoughts for the next few days. I'll get an update on her condition after 10:30 tomorrow.

Update:

Still not eating or drinking on her own. They force fed her greens, applesauce and baby food (no wonder she's not eating on her own! <_< )

She's peeing and there were a few tiny little poops in her litter box. They gave her a shot of Reglan which is suppose to make the stomach contract to try and force out whatever is in there.

I stopped by to see her after work and she looks and acts completely normal. She's not lethargic at all. They are going to keep her overnight again tonight and see if things improve tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for the prayers and good thoughts. I hope she will pass this thing in her stomach. Oh, and the other thing the vet told me is not to let her dig in phone books or newspapers anymore...paper is just as bad as carpeting for bunnies and can get compacted in their stomachs.

Bo B Bunny - January 4, 2007 07:40 AM (GMT)
I wondered about that for a long time. I will let mine have a phone book but they never showed much interest. Now, I'll not let them at all.

We let them have cardboard, but only boxes and that's under our supervision - they nibble, but not enough to hurt them.

Clover mostly does the 500 when she's out - Bo does too, but he plays with stuff as well. She plays with her toys in the middle of the night in her cage. <_<

I'm anxious to hear how Ellie does overnight. It sounds pretty good so far! :happybun:

bluebird - January 4, 2007 01:26 PM (GMT)
I hope your bunny passes whatever is stuck in there.bluebird

Poor Ellie  Praying!

bunnee mom - January 4, 2007 10:09 PM (GMT)
Ellie is home! :spice:

The vet said she was much more improved this morning. She was finally eating on her own. Said Ellie really loves applesauce, which surprised me because I could never get her to eat a piece of apple. I bought her a fresh bag of Oxbow hay and I'm going to start limiting her pellets to just at night when I put her to bed. Hopefully she'll eat more hay and veggies now.

I have to give her Laxatone once a day for a couple weeks...then just once a week for maintenance. She seemed very happy to be back in her own surroundings and immediately jumped up on the chair to reclaim her rightful throne in the family room. :P

Thanks so much for all your prayers. :)

So nice to hear Ellie is recovering and doing better. :spice:
If she likes soft foods like applesauce, you should try pumpkin for fiber. You could try 1 or 2 tsp of low fat plain yogurt twice a day. I gave that to Pebbles to help settle her stomach when I was treating her with antibiotics last week. Pebbles also loves NutriCal with oats to stimulate her appetite.

Bo B Bunny - January 5, 2007 12:04 PM (GMT)
Clover can't get enough canned pumpkin! We give it to her once in awhile just for a treat. They also get oats at least a couple of times each week. Sometimes it's only a few bits, and other times I'll give them a tsp or so.

I like giving them variety because with Clover especially, she'd get all sorts of stuff outside in the wild. Of course, she'd have to find it first - she could smell her oatsies this morning when I gave them some while they played...... but she couldn't find them and she looked like a tracking dog until she did!

bunnee mom - January 5, 2007 10:29 PM (GMT)
I wish I had a camera right now, but it would be covered in pumpkin if I did!!

I had tried pumpkin with Ellie once before and it was not successful, but she did let me put it on her paws. THIS TIME was different...I put some on her paw and she hopped away, leaving a trail of pumpkin all over the floor :tsk:

I tried holding her and put some on the front of her face and she startled and shook her head sending the pumpkin flying all over me....nice.

I hope Ellie gets better soon! :(

bunnee mom - January 6, 2007 05:19 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure how things are going with Ellie, so I have a call into the vet.

There are no signs of any poops in her litter box since the first night we brought her home (I cleaned it the next day so I can monitor the output). We syringed some canned pumpkin into her mouth this morning and that worked well. She's eating romaine, but not much hay and no pellets. I've yet to see her drink any water, but the vet said if she's eating romaine that would give her some fluid.

I just don't understand this!! She seems fine, but nothing is coming out of her! :(

Emily - January 6, 2007 10:11 PM (GMT)
 and more prayers!

Bo B Bunny - January 9, 2007 02:42 AM (GMT)
Any news? I've been praying and thinking about both of you!

bunnee mom - January 9, 2007 05:26 AM (GMT)
We just had a HORRIBLE night with Ellie.

We were out tonight getting ready to watch the big football game (Ohio State vs. Florida Gators) when Katie called us screaming hysterically into the phone that Ellie was flipping around on the floor having a seizure. We went immediately home...it was pathetic. I feared the worst and figured we would have to put her down. I held her in my arms while my husband drove to the Emergency Animal Hospital which is 1/2 hr. away. Ellie actually started to calm down and her breathing settled down quite a bit.

To make a long story short (we were at the Hospital for 3 hrs with her) the dr. said she wasn't having a seizure at all....her ears were impacted with wax and the left one was so bad that it punctured her ear drum!! I told you all that I thought she was having a hearing problem!!! The poor thing can barely walk, her equilibrium is way off. Her head isn't tilting or anything like that though.

I have about 3 different meds to give her for the next couple weeks. We have to keep her in our 1/2 bath with blankets on the floor so she won't hurt herself if she does fall over. The poor thing can barely make it inside her litter box. She is one exhausted rabbit tonight...she fell asleep in my arms on the way home and is sound asleep in her basket in the bathroom right now.

I hope this is all it is. I'm kinda mad at my vet about this ear thing. I TOLD her I thought Ellie was having an ear problem, but she was all focused on her stomach and didn't even look at her ears! So far the vet bills are over $500. But that's OK...we love her with all our hearts.

I'll update again tomorrow. I hope Ellie does OK in the bathroom for now. The vet couldn't believe we let her have free roam in our family room....and was surprised to learn that she was litter box trained...sigh....I'm at the mercy of these vets right now and neither one is giving me much confidence. :(

Bo B Bunny - January 9, 2007 04:13 PM (GMT)
Oh my goodness :(

I can't believe they missed that! Ears can cause them not to eat as much also which can cause tummy issues..... poor baby!

Keep us posted - we're praying for her!!!!

Delphinum - January 9, 2007 05:50 PM (GMT)
:( That sounds awful! I really hope she's okay... please keep updating us, I've been thinking about you both.

bunnee mom - January 9, 2007 10:04 PM (GMT)
Ellie seems much improved since last night. She's been chowing down on hay and we had lots of poopies and cecals this morning!! :spice:

She seems a little unsteady on her feet, but she is able to make it in and out of her basket without difficulty. My husband had her in the family room this afternoon to get some exercise and she seemed happy to be out of her bathroom suite :)

I will put her back into the bathroom tonight for her own safety though. I promise to get pictures of her little temporary set up. We're going to build her a NIC Cube pen in our family room probably this weekend.

I just hope we caught this early enough and she continues to improve. I've read some horror stories on the internet about ear problems in rabbits. I'm so angry with my vet for not checking out her ears last week....this whole thing could have been avoided!

Bo B Bunny - January 10, 2007 01:13 AM (GMT)
YAY!!! I'm so happy to hear she's feeling a lot better!

I bet it hurt her to eat! Poor little girl! YAY for poopies!

I always insist that my animals' ears are checked when they go to the vet - usually it's not even a question - it's just done.

bunnee mom - January 10, 2007 11:26 PM (GMT)
Ellie seems to be doing wonderful!

She's eating hay like there is no tomorrow and we have LOTS of poopies! I don't think she had a blockage in her stomach at all. If my vet had just checked her ears this whole thing could have been avoided and probably saved us $400! Oh well, live and learn.

She's a little unsteady and wobbles at times, but her head is not tilting at all, which is what I was concerned would happen.

:) :) :)

Bo B Bunny - January 11, 2007 11:36 AM (GMT)
Keep an eye on her, she could still have issues.

I think you are right about not being blocked. I thought that when you told us about the ear - She wasn't eating cause it hurt her ear/she felt bad.

I'm so glad you took her to the other vet and she's doing well. I bet she's feeling like a new girl!

bunnee mom - January 15, 2007 10:24 PM (GMT)
Update on Ellie:

She took a slight turn for the worse since my last post. She wasn't eating much and definitely no poopies. I finally posted my situation on RO hoping someone with more experience might have suggestions. I started giving her .3 ml of pineapple juice 3 times a day and that seemed to help a little. I also decided to take her off all the meds (she was taking 3)...and that REALLY helped. She is back to her normal old self now. In fact, I was hand feeding her a few oats earlier and she nipped my hand when I started to take it away <_<

She has an appt with Vet #1 tomorrow night just to re-check her ears. After that, I'll prolly do some more research and see if I can find a new vet for her.

Bo B Bunny - January 17, 2007 10:52 PM (GMT)
I'm glad she's doing better. I've been off for a couple of days so I just found this. What did the vet say?

bunnee mom - January 18, 2007 11:13 PM (GMT)
Bo, at the risk of repeating myself see my post about the Vet under Rants.

Ellie is still doing great...running around the room and eating like a little piggy

HappyBunny - January 19, 2007 01:32 AM (GMT)
AWWW!!! I hope she'll be k.

Mabey u should let her run around in a room without carpet, watch her closely, or even make a pin with nit-cubes or somethin with a blankey underneath it so she will not chew or dig on the carpet.................we have a provlem with Bo and the carpet. We used to let himn run in the living room when he was a little younger, and now we can't because of carpet chewing <_< so we just let him play on the family room with wood flooring.

I'll keep Ellie in my thoughts and prayers. :angelbun:

Hope u feel btr Ellie. :nurse:

Kismet - January 19, 2007 05:10 AM (GMT)
Oh gosh...I haven't been here in a while, so sorry I'm late, but I'm so sorry to hear about the problems with Ellie! :( She is such a lucky bunny to have such caring, loving owners. Get well soon, Ellie!
