Title: TRACTOR SUPPLY DUMPS WOODYPET!!!!

Bo B Bunny - October 26, 2006 12:36 AM (GMT)
Today, I went to get my bag of :woody: for the boys and guess what? TSC isn't going to carry it now. I was in shock! They said they thought it was in all the stores so I contacted :woody: and sure enough they confirmed what was said.

They tried to sell me Equine Fresh, but I don't know if it's safe for the bunnies.

Some types of pine stall products -- the ones that smell strongly of pine -- aren't really a good idea, although that said, I still use a little (somewhat reluctantly) around here because my bunnies aren't caged, they don't spend a lot of time in close proximity to their litter boxes, and the boxes are in very well ventilated areas. I also really try and wet them down then dry them out before using them to keep the fumes down.

In the meantime, I'm on a hunt for a good cheap wood stove pellet. They've been treated differently and don't have the problems as the pine stall pellets.

Woody Pet is a Canadian Product, and their prices have been rising. Add on transportation costs, it must be cheaper for TSC to switch to a local product.
My first choice is Woody Pet. It is a softer pellet and breaks down easier making it more absorbdent and controls odur the best. Lucky for me, I still have stock in my basement.

Here is a list of Wood Products that JimD and I came up with as a replacement for Woody Pet.

ABM (Advanced Bedding Management)
Agway (their own brand)
Dragon Mountain
Dry Den
Dry Stall
Equi-Litter
EquineFresh
Feline Pine
Gentle Touch Products
Guardian Horse Bedding
J.P. McCrumb Woodshavings
Kaytee
Kentucky Komfort
Lone Star Bedding
Magnum Horse Products
Norstar Pellet Bedding
Pine Stall Horse Bedding
Pinnacle Pine Horse Bedding
Southern States Premium Pellet Bedding
Woody Pet

I have tried other products on the list.

Dragon Mountain smell so strong of Pine that it gave me headaches. I put it away to "air" out, and it eventually did smell less. It must of been a fresh batch to smell that strong.
Note: Fire Master Wood pellets is the same company that makes Pinestall wood pellets. So there maybe other companies that package the same product under different Brand Names.

I'm using the Pine Stall (at least for Radar and Darry), it smells very strong as well. Interesting that they're the same company. I thought the wood stove pellets were 'pre-cooked' or some such thing. I wrote to the company about the Pine Stall pellets, btw, they never responded, so I'd like to ditch them regardless.

I've actually found that for us slobs (unlike the pristine PetBunny and his perfect little alien-enhanced bunny Pebbles :P ), using plain old hay and newspaper works the best, at least for Dill and Sherry. They love it and eat a lot more of it. They eat it, play in it and poop in it.

The bigger, wetter rabbits need a little more absorbsion, though. And for Pipp I have a litter box with a thin layer of mashed pine pellets topped with hay, but she still won't eat it. (She loves rearranging it though).

I've currently got a 90 lb bale of timothy 1st cut, two 60 lb bales of timothy 2nd cut and a 9lb bag of oat hay stored in the spare bathtub.

With your proximity to horses and sheep, surely you have access to a lot of nice, fresh, clean hay?

I'm in contact with the makers of Equine Fresh and they have told me that it is safe, however, I have asked (and waiting for reply) if the dangerous hydrocarbons are removed.

TSC Carries equine fresh. I also think there is a place about 1/2 hour from me I can get WoodyPet if it comes to that.

Equine Fresh is fine, I used it for my bunnies when they started going through woody pet too fast

That sucks that TSC isnt carrying it anymore though! Whats with that?!

Check out Rural King if you have one in your area. I get it there. Or you could take a side trip down to Evansville LOL

Man, that sucks. I never got to try Woody Pet. :( I can't find the horse stall pellets around here ANYWHERE. I guess we had a huge pine pellet shortage last winter and people came and bought all the horse stall pellets for their wood stoves and the stock STILL hasn't been replenished. So I've been buying pine pellet cat litter for my buns with litter boxes. Which sucks because it's way more expensive. :thud:

HappyBunny - November 1, 2006 08:04 PM (GMT)
u know u could use shreded newspaper. it would be a lot easier and the buns can eat it too. the buns wouls think it is yummy. :yum: :happybun:

Shredded paper doesn't work real well - it would get all yucky and smelly. I might try the equine fresh - I'm not sure I like Oxbow's grass pellet litter - Bo does tho - So does clover since he never leaves his box.
