Title: Looks like I spoke too soon too...
Delphinum - October 8, 2006 02:18 PM (GMT)
Well of the two rabbits we expected to go downhill in the next year or so, one of them just has. Dan went out to clean them this afternoon and Blossom's legs have collapsed in on themselves, meaning that both of them now splay out in a kind of W shape... It's absolutely heart wrenching to see her like this. She hasn't been able to clean herself and has been sitting in her own urine, so I'm worried about her getting flystrike, etc.
She is managing to get around by bouncing along precariously on her toes. She's still eating like a pig, which is good, but because of her fluffiness, it's difficult to see how much weight she's lost, if any. This must've happened during the night, as she wasn't like this yesterday. I fear she's had a stroke or has twisted her back, thus causing the hips to collapse in. :( :upset:
Anyways, we're taking her to the vet tomorrow to see if anything can be done to help her, but I'm thinking that it's highly unlikely. We'll just have to wait and see what happens. Here are some photos... :(

Update: Blossom's gone down hill rapidly and is now breathing very slowly and labouredly. She's refusing food now (but has been out on the grass all afternoon eating) and she's looking really miserable.
I can't see her making it until tomorrow. :(

I'm so sorry, Ang. I know it's so hard to see them be so ill. She's had a good life with you and Dan.
She really looks as if she's still happy even with the problem in her legs. I'm sorry she went further downhill since you posted first. :(
Clover's leg is like hers.... it looks bad, but he does very well with it - he even uses it to scratch. He just can't go to the vet or they'll take him and put him down..... I won't allow that unless he starts having pain.
Give the baby a kiss for me and tell her she's a good girl.

Thanks Pennie. I don't think it's been her leg that's caused this... like Clover, she does fine on it usually. I just think that something in her other hip has collapsed causing her other knee to turn in too. :(
I love Blossom to bits, she's such a sweetie, but I expected this to happen eventually... Same with HD...
Am feeling quite pathetically sorry for myself today as have had a really hard week. I just wish she wasn't ill. :(

I wish there was more I could do for you but the distance just doesn't allow much. I hope your week is better this time around!
Blossom must have had a problem for her legs to do this. I hate to hear it and it's so sad..... like you said it's expected...... and she's had extra time because of you and Dan - if it hadn't been for her rescue and home with you she might not have made it before.

Thanks! She's actually still alive and breathing better now. Her legs even look slightly better and not so caked in dirt. (we did bath her yesterday mind you) She has an appointment with the vet tonight, so we'll get her in and see what he says.
She still hasn't moved since last night though, so we're not holding out much hope, but it's good that she doesn't seem to be in pain.

That's great news! I'm glad she's not in pain either. That's what gets to me more than anything..... an animal in pain and no idea or ability to help them.
Ang, How old is Blossom supposed to be?
Keep us posted on the vet visit.
