Title: Red Bumps on Bunny Ears
Description: Harmless, but what are they?!

Hi all.
My bunny has these red bumps that slowly come and go. Stay for months and then go for months and they usually return in the same place. They were on her ears, but I found two small ones on her body, but now they are gone. Sometimes they get really large, and other times they just stay small. They look like blisters or hives.
I took her to a very well-known rabbit savvy vet, and even she was stumped. They did tests and a biopsy, and found it was just some strange kind of irritation. After removing one large one, only for it to return, they gave me some medicated lotions to see if that would help, then we went into herbal recommendations. Nothing worked.
I figured it was some sort of allergic reaction, but I've really gone through different things to try and figure it out. I have another bunny who is just fine, and they've lived together for three years, so I know it's not contagious.
She doesn't seem to notice them, and they are usually hidden underneath the fur, so unless they begin to bother her, or cause her problems we have just decided to let them be.
Has anyone else had this problem with their bunny?

Wow, ear mites. I would have never guessed that. I mean I know what ear mites usually do, but you are saying that these red hive like bumps were also on your bunny and they were diagnosed as a result of mites? Was it some sort of allergic reaction to them or ???
My bunny even had one of the bumps removed, only for it to return in the same place - you'd think the vet would have figured out ear mites if that were the case.
Can you describe what the bumps looked like on your bunny? Were they red, swollen?
So strange.

I never took her to the vets for it, I just thought when she would itch her ears that happend. (i've had her since '97 and she died in '04 of cancer that we believe she had a lump on the back of her leg, when i found it was to late to take her to the vet.) But after i Got the rabbit now i'm mor educated to what to look for and what they could get. so yeah, I've read abotu the ear mites. I'm not sure that they would come back.
THey were small, and red, and bumpy. i would feel them all them time. Never understood what it was till after she passed away.
Maybe someone eles will read this now and give you their input on it also. becasue that's strange.

Can rabbits get heat rash? Anyone know?
My husband gets small red blister type bumps on his feet when its really hot out...
Do the bumps come/go during a certain season or temperatures?
To pinpoint something as vague as this you need to keep careful tabs on everything your bun is exposed to. Different types of hay? Pellets? Greens? Litter/bedding? Cleaning chemicals (a lot of animals have skin allergies to household chemicals)? Air fresheners?
I haven't had any experience with ear mites yet *knock on wood* so I can't tell you if that's a symptom or not from first hand experience.
I can however looks for links :)

Ok I found some links for you ;)
I also forgot to ask if you could get any or have any pictures of the bumps? That would help to figure out what it is.

picture of ear mitesPsoroptes cuniculi (Ear Mite) in a Rabbit Sarcocystis "There are some morphological differences between the Sarcocystis cysts of different animals. The sarcocysts found in sheep, rabbits, mice and ducks are macroscopic in size, whereas other mammalian forms (deer, moose and elk) are microscopic. In ducks the cysts are whitish streaks which resemble grains of rice, while the cysts in rabbits are thinner and more elongate."Sebaceous Adenitis in Four Domestic Rabbits "Four domestic rabbits were presented with a history of nonpruritic scale. Multiple skin biopsies revealed findings compatible with sebaceous adenitis as reported in other species: inflammation directed at the sebaceous gland, and/or an absence of sebaceous glands...."Vetcutis (skin tests and photos of parasites, fungi, bacteria)

skin problemsLumps and bumps"There are lots of causes of lumps including abscesses, cysts, tumours, and old scars. Vaccination reactions sometimes leave small lumps beneath the skin of the scruff.
Sometimes the identity of a lump can be guessed at by what they feel like: for example, fluid filled lumps are usually cysts. But lumps can be better differentiated by inserting a large gauge needle into the lump ("aspiration cytology") to obtain a sample of the contents."I hope that helps you out. Keep us updated :)
