Title: Sore Hocks

MyBabyBunnies - September 11, 2006 01:00 AM (GMT)
Today I was feeling Spice over and I felt an odd sort of thing on his foot, so I managed to fight him on to his back only to find out he has sore hocks. They aren't really bad, just feel like callouses. I feel horrible since I've never noticed them before but in my defence, Spice has never allowed me to touch his feet so it's always been a chore. Instead I rely on looking at his feet when he stretches out but apparently I was decieved. I thought I'd see the sore hocks clearly through his fur, I was wrong. I have to dig through his fur to find them which is not what I've seen/read online. I still feel bad about it though.

To make matters worse, Mocha also has at least one sore hock. After I found Spice's, I checked the others and it took an hour to look at one of Mocha's feet. He has a small one on one of his feet but I couldn't clearly get a good look at his other, I only got a quick feel and I didn't feel anything. I'm really confused, I keep their cages clean so I'm wondering if perhaps they are too heavy for a wire bottom being 7.5 lbs? How could I have been so careless as to miss it on not only one, but 2 rabbits?

Anyways, I'm not taking them to the vet yet, I've cleaned the cages thoroughly and covered nearly all the wire and drilled a few holes to allow pee to drain through the wood. I also wont be allowing them on mud or wet grass in case that's the reason. So I'll monitor them and if it doesn't improve, then off to the vet.

So I'm off to baby my bunnies and apologize for being such a careless bunny mom. :(

huh.. didnt know you have to check them. although Cinn wont let anyone touch her. And with me not being able to breath when i handle her. Doesnt really work out that way.

didn't knwo they need to see a vet about that also.

If their feet are bleed then you need to take them to a vet other wise its normal for the hocks to have big calouses and be a little red.

Bo has some little hard calluses I believe. He had a lot off fur off one at a time but it's pretty well surrounded now.

Be careful about wood and pee. If they are on wood all the time it will get all wet and gross and dirty.

I found that giving them a resting mat really made a world of difference from the wire. Bo has wire, mats and grass mats. Clover can't have the grass ones cause he pees on them - so he has a blankie instead. It can be washed. <_<

Don't worry, you aren't a bad mommy.
