Title: bald spots?

Cinnabun - August 23, 2006 08:55 PM (GMT)
So i'm takign care of my neighbors rabbits for a week. and she asked me to take a look at them, they have a few bald spots. the REW/Caddy has a bald spot on the top of her head. i looked at it, and theres no open wounds it's just red. i thought maybe Gimpy just ripped it off when she was mounting Caddy by mistake. and Gimpy has a few on her ears. but she also has a few on the back of her. but they are also shedding BIG time. i thought maybe that they are Moulting since it's Aug and fall is coming up soon.

What do you think?

Delphinum - August 23, 2006 09:21 PM (GMT)
It could be the humping, or it could be mites. Is there any white dandruff type stuff and is the hair pulling out easily?

Bo B Bunny - August 23, 2006 09:50 PM (GMT)
Bo has bald spots, but it's molting. He doesn't have redness..... it's nice and white.

Could be ringworm also.

Lanna - August 23, 2006 10:04 PM (GMT)
My first thought was ring worm cause she said it was red. Are they balding behind their ears on the nape of their neck? White flakes? If not I'd say ring worms. If you find white flakes then it's probably mites.

Did you see any fur around the cage? If they were fighting and pulling each other bald then you'd find some fur somewhere....you'd think.

Cinnabun - August 23, 2006 10:13 PM (GMT)
Eek i hope its not ringworm! I'll bring the dig over tomorrow, and try to get some pictures.

I didn't notice any flakes at all.

Gimpy has a tiny bald spot on her ears to the front where they bend down.

other than that Caddy has it worse. its right on top of her head.

Lanna - August 24, 2006 05:48 AM (GMT)
I doubt it's mites if it's on top of her/his head. That's not to say it cant be...I just doubt it. It could just be moulting. Sweet Pea looks horrible right now, and she also has a bald-ish looking spot on top of her head. Since it's red tho, in the absence of flakes, I'd say ringworm/fighting.

Cinnabun - August 24, 2006 06:38 AM (GMT)
i hope it was just them fighting. They do fight over their food bowl when its time to eat. Their bowl is way to small for two rabbits to be sharing.

I don't want to scare you, and I'd really like to see pictures so I could give you more info, but it sounds like it could be scabies (sarcoptes). Scabies usually likes to start around the head and ears. (When we get scabies cases at work I can almost always identify it before doc does the skin scraping).

Are you or any other people in the house itching and scratching? That's another sign because scabies are communicable to humans. Just to be safe, always wash your hands after handling them.

Here are some links about mange and fur loss:

when i take care of them, i don't notice them Itching. They are my Neighbors Rabbits. She doesn't take good care of them the reason why she's getting rid of them. But they are also in feces that are like CAKED onto the bottom. but they ar ein a new cage now, Vent. from both sides, front, and bottom. so hopefully that will be better for them but its' not for long.

I couldn't get pictures today because it's been raining and hailing. so maybe tomorrow

Cinnabun - August 25, 2006 06:08 PM (GMT)
So i just took care of them, and the white one lost more hair. Now it's getting closer to the eye. My mom thinks it's Ringworm. because it's all red, and i think i saw liek something white on there. but i dunno if that was the fur growing in or what. so she's going ot come with me, to check it out tomorrow.. or tonight.

Cinnabun - August 27, 2006 05:40 PM (GMT)
So my mom went and looked at it, adn she said it's not Ring worm. it's something eles

now Gimpy has it on her Dewlap, and she's not eating now. and for these rabbits that's not normal! I'm pretty worried myself right now.

Bo B Bunny - August 27, 2006 10:24 PM (GMT)
After reading this I got all worked up because Bo has a big bald spot on his side and a little one near his ear. Clover has places on both sides of his neck and on the top of his head. I feared Mites, Ringworm and all sorts of things -

It's molting. Both boys have hair growing in from the front to the back of the bald spot(s)

For some reason, Bo is molting so heavy right there. They were exposed to hotter temps when our A/C was out and he leaned against a frozen water bottle, but not on that side..... that's what I think happened.

Clover, he's losing his jr. coat. All of his hair that's coming off is that baby soft stuff. I'm pretty certain he had little "extras" when I turned him over today. He's still at the "I can tuck and hide these" stage... <_<

Cinnabun - August 27, 2006 10:37 PM (GMT)
I don't think Caddy and Gimpy are Molting. well they are shedding right now. but these spots are having some effect on them. Gimpy isn't eating. they arent their hyper happy self. and they have one of those water bottles take them about 2 days to finish. well i filled it up yesterday, and this morning it was bone dry.

I'm wondering if Gimpy had it first, and then they were cuddling and Caddy cought it on her head.

I checked their old pen to see if i could see clumps of hair anywhere from a possiable fight, didn't see anything but a bunch of moths come flyign at my face.

and i looked at their poops, and they are big and round.. normal.

I'm really stumped. I tried hand feeding Gimpy but she wouldn't take the food.

theres no small white flacks coeming off of them.

I'm wondering. Can Rabbits catch Mange? i wonder if that is what they have...

Bo B Bunny - August 27, 2006 10:58 PM (GMT)
Yes, rabbits can get mange.

Cinnabun - August 28, 2006 01:02 AM (GMT)
I wonder if that is what they are getting.

Cinnabun - September 15, 2006 11:27 PM (GMT)
the white one is WAY worse now. it's the side of the face, and now the back end!

She hasnt taken them to the vets at all yet. and she probably wont. it's makingme so angry! Because when i take Taya out i see the rabbits. and the condition they are in. and i want to do somethign for them. maybe my mom will email her grandma. and she'll talk her into going.

It's just aweful now. :( and if it's contigous towards other animals i dont want Britt or Taya catching it since they are right by the fence. and along with Lulu, Lulu goes by the cage.. UGH!

aloha420wsm - September 15, 2006 11:55 PM (GMT)
I HIGHLY recommend keeping your animals, and yourself if possible, away from them. I honestly think this is a scabies case, and scabies can be communicable to humans. She needs to get them to the vet asap.

I can never understand why people wait so long to bring in their animals when they have fur loss. Its not like its a normal everyday thing... "oh look, there goes another dog with bald patches" geez.

Cinnabun - September 16, 2006 01:04 AM (GMT)
I'm going to try to keep them away from there.

She makes me SO angry! so has NO time for her rabbits. and when you try to offer help for the rabbits like i did. i offered to bring them to the vets for her if shes to busy. she gets mad. and just says no.

Those poor rabbits, they eat from a bowl that is big enough for one. and they have to share that. and they are in a small cage... at least this one they arent in a inch or more of feces.

Cinnabun - September 22, 2006 10:29 PM (GMT)
She just took them to the vets, (well just got back).

The vet doesnt know what it could be. so they did scrappings to test for Fungus. wont know for a couple of days. and they are also being treated for mites.

aloha420wsm - September 26, 2006 08:58 AM (GMT)
Well at least she finally got them to the vet!

Today at work doctor actually let me talk to a client about rabbits (I'm not supposed to say anything because it could be a liability if the wrong info is given). This woman was asking about her neighboors rabbit that's itching and scratching behind its ears/nape of the neck. I told her to have them look for white dandruff-y flakes since it sounded more like the walking dandruff, I also said it would have to be taken to the vet for Ivermec injections. She said the neighboor doesn't want to take it to the vet or something like that.... sounds familiar....
I also let her know that rabbits can get scabies and 'regular' mange. Hopefully my info helped and the bun will get taken to a vet *wishful thinking*. She also mentioned that the rabbit is 'old' (idk what some people consider old for a bun, I know a 14yr old bun....) so I'm thinking the owners won't treat it :-/

I hope all goes well with your neighboors buns! I'm glad they're finally being treated and we'll get to the bottom of the fur loss. Keep us updated with what you know :)

Bo B Bunny - September 26, 2006 10:32 AM (GMT)
So, Cinn, any news?

aloha, that's great you were able to help this person. Your boss should accept your help/knowledge and find a way for you to state that "this is what I've heard/know but you really need to ask a skilled rabbit vet"..... Bunny people seem to know more about bunnies than a lot of the non-rabbit vets.

Cinnabun - September 26, 2006 03:24 PM (GMT)
I haven't heard anything, I'll have to email her grandma. Although I knew before her grandma that the rabbits had a vet appt. so I'm not sure her grandma would know. if she doesnt then I'll email her.

Cinnabun - September 27, 2006 01:51 AM (GMT)
I guess she said the hair is growing back now. So maybe it was because of the mites...?

Bo B Bunny - September 29, 2006 12:36 AM (GMT)
Well, Bo is having a TREMENDOUS molt! I have seen bunnies from outside molt out like Spice and Mocha - with their thick waves of loss and all..... but this is like that and he's inside!!! I have been plucking and brushing so he has a few naked areas..... :innocent: He seems to enjoy most of the attention and grooming. I end up furry by the end of it all.....
