Title: New Job

MyBabyBunnies - July 28, 2006 03:56 AM (GMT)
Well as some of you know, I recently got a job at the local grocery store which was great and all... until I met my manager. On my first day I was thrown into it when I had no idea what I was doing -- no idea what meats were which, how to slice meats, or even how to work the scale. But I managed to get through it.

Well after helping a customer, I stood around not knowing what to do since all I had been trained to do was what I had been doing with the customers. I think I was standing around for maybe a minute before I got yelled at by my manager telling me to quit standing around and to do something. Well I almost lost it on her, I was tempted to tell her that maybe she should work on training me then so I wasn't standing around but I was polite about it and found myself a job wiping down the work area.

Today, I went to talk to her because I was booked in on a day that I can absolutely not work and she got mad at me and told me that she doesn't change the schedule after it's been made. Well, I didn't even know I was booked in to work and by that time I was already booked in on that day. Well I told her that whether I was booked to work or not, I would not be going, Well, she finally gave me the day off.

I really don't like her! I wanted to quit after my first day. It doesn't help I started work on the BUSIEST day all year.

Oh no :(

I don't understand how come some people seem to thrive on making others miserable. She sounds like just that type.

I'm glad you stood your ground. She needs to be a bit more helpful to new people.

Ok, well after having time to cool down and get a decent nights sleep, I feel better and realise it wasn't all that bad. But I was talking to one of the other employees and I guess every week they hire about 20 people. Of those 20 people, 10 quit their first week, another 5 quit in the first month and after a year, only 2 or 3 are left working there. So I can see how my manager is stressed and we are severely understaffed BUT I can also see why so many people quit so soon and I think if they had one person specifically designated to train the newbies in each area and nothing more, that things would be a lot better and they would be able to keep more people.

I'm not going to quit since I'll only be there until September seeing as how I wont be able to handle working to 1 or 2 in the morning when I have to get up at 5 just to get to school and they have already proven that they are not flexible in their hours. But still, it's pretty bad when I dread work and I've only been there for 3 days.

I guess that's life, but I wish I would have had a better manager for my first paying job. It really leaves a bad impression to have your first job turn out like this.

Welcome to the work world.

I know all about S*f*w*y.
Did I tell you they sell our Bean Sprouts?

Is it the Dept. Manager or the Store Manager that you have problems with?
Usually Dept. Managers get transfered from store to store, and they never stay in one place for long. I met some really nice ones and some not so nice. Must be the pressure they have from Head Office or the Store Manager.

For part timers, and summer students, managers just take advantage of them because they don't stay long. To be successful there, you have to work on your own and keep busy.

Did you have to sign up in the union?

I know, that's life but I'm not being paid enough to put up with it. When I finish school, I'll put up with it but I am in no mood to do it now.

But it is the department manager and she is not leaving anytime soon. She's been there for at least 1.5 years.

I am considered part time, but only 2 people are full time. And I never actually told them I would be returning to school in the fall. :innocent: So they think I'm working there until at least the fall of 2007.

Yeah I had to sign up and pay into the union which is pants! I pay something like $15 weekly because I work in Deli while regular clerks only pay $7.

How's your job holding up now?

MyBabyBunnies - August 6, 2006 04:10 AM (GMT)
Erm... I quit, LOL.

I know, it wasn't that bad but considering it was not in my ball park since I don't really eat meat, then add the fact that I hated management and the late hours I kept getting, and top it off with the fact that it pays no more than minimum wage with the Union Fees I had to pay, it just wasn't worth it.

If there would have been a compromise somewhere like I had liked the job or the management was nicer, I would have stuck around but all this job did was make me grouchy so last night was my last night.

I didn't know that. :(

Are you going to try something else?
