Title: BUNNIES EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!

Bo B Bunny - July 15, 2006 03:08 AM (GMT)
For over a year now, I've heard about an old farmer who has a yard full of bunnies. He lives near my inlaws and the other day I was over and asked exactly where it was...... OMG! I've never seen so many bunnies!

It's not a great situation of course - they are all mixed and breed. I don't condone that but he is an old man from old ways.

They are all loose and stay on the farm. He's only had 2 get hurt on the road in 10 years!!!! He feeds them hay and they eat grass and it's not the best but he gives them day old bread. They are VERY healthy actually. I think he might give them pellets in the winter. He loves them and all the company he gets from them.

Several people have rehomed pets there and they all come back to visit. They also drop off bags of food for them (I think he uses it when bad weather comes)

Recently someone took a count and got 91 at least... that was way off from all the ones that hide and burrow.

When he calls them "HERE BUNNY BUNNY!" they come hopping! These photos aren't even the tip of the iceburg.

Here are some playing in the mud...... it was so funny to see them do this! A couple flopped on a nice damp spot that was cool - I wish we'd gotten a photo of that.

That's crazy!! How does he keep track of so many bunnies?! wow...

Some of those bunnies look a lil weird in those pics :P ;)

I'd love to visit that farm though... and "here bunny bunny!!!" that is the cutest thing ever!!!

Peppy doesn't listen to me much unless I have yogurt drops or say "TREAT!
<_<

Cinnabun - July 15, 2006 03:35 AM (GMT)
wow.. how does he keep them in his yard.. and would he like to add Cinnamen to the mix?? LOL  jk

 There was an elderly lady in Nevada who had a similar type situation and she ended up with 1000 rabbits in her yard. So I can just see the disaster is a couple years...

Where do they sleep? Does he have a barn, or do they just sleep outside?

I agree it's not the greatest situation, but at least he's taking care of them.

I have an aunt that does this but more on a closed scale!
She's got about 3 or 4 rabbits right now that run loose on her farm and they STAY on the farm. She never wanted 'white' rabbits as they stand out but well...she's had 'white rabbits' on her farm. They hang out in the indoor arena, under the barns, hang out with the chickens and share water with them etc. She's got a bale of hay in the barn they eat from and in the winter she feeds them pellets. Honestly, her rabbits look a lot healther then those in the photos. Her's have extremely healthy coats and appear very healthy overall. You can't touch her rabbits tho because she's made them afraid of humans for the purpose of predators. I can occasionaly get near the ones I've let loose on her farm.

I supply her rabbits through culls etc and only allow certain rabbits out on the farm. For example, I've got a doe that can't have kits because the 2 times she's had a litter here, both times I just about lost her from fetal giants. So she's staying here unless I can find a pet home for her which is hard with an older rabbit. I've not got a rabbit blind in one eye but I won't take her out to the farm either because it's just not right to send a half blind rabbit to hide from pedators.

But 91....that's just WAY too many to have loose in my thoughts. At least my aunt is responsible in that aspect. ;) Honestly they are very happy running around on the farm and seem to enjoy themselves.

:P Yeah, some look like chickens huh? ;)

They have barns, sheds, woodpiles, all sorts of places to make home. I'm sure he's got about 120 or so really and I would say he'll die before he has 1000 but a friend was there who said they would take over probably when it's time.

I don't know how he keeps them on his property, but they don't leave.

Maybe Pebbles could spare some space. :P

WOW! Bo do you mind If I post those pictures on another forum? Thats is amazing!!

Bo B Bunny - July 15, 2006 11:38 PM (GMT)
Go ahead.

BTW, this guy has a really big farm....... we couldn't even see his big angus cows (seven of them) in the back cause of the trees and stuff.

In truth, those bunnies are living better than some house bunnies....

How do you get a lawn like that Pet?!
Ours has been ravaged by rabbits and dogs!

Some of those look like Sable rabbits in the first picture along with blue rexes... probably an incredible amount of crosses though... :???:

I just kept it simple and have lots of space. The neighbours trees are providing us shade so one less thing to do. :P
My wife wanted to grow roses, so we raised the flower bed. She doesn't have much of a green thumb, so we settled on something easier.
However it worked out O.K. because Pebbles doesn't jump up into the flowers.
This year I rebuilt the patio deck so Pebbles can't get under it, so now she can have the entire back yard as a free run. :)

This was our old backyard, it was winter though so the grass wasn't so green anymore. Maggie only went outside once there (not fenced, too many wild animals)

Our new house has a backyard with two levels, the first level is a patio, gardens, and some grass (She's standing on the stairs down to the second level)

In this one you can see the picnic table and tent thingie, there's a hole in the ground so we could have fires, but we ended up buying one of those big outdoor contained fire place thingies, so now thats in a different part of the yard on a patio with chairs. And where Maggie is standing is now a big waterfall with frogs.

You can kind of see the rest of the yard in this picture, there's a lot missing though.

wow, bunny heaven! and sas heaven!! I never thought being outside was all that bad, but this IS how the 1000-bunnies problem started in nevada. and here in a vancouver suburb, there's 5000 wreaking havoc. they're talking about shooting them all. :(

it may be a slow process at first, but you go from 100 to 1000 in lightening speed. 50 girls, 5 kits each, at least 5 times a year, those kits having kits... yikes! somebody should at least make an effort to separate the girls from the boys.

michelle, you're moving to vancouver or somewhere close by? nice!

you may want to sign up at sarsbc (small animal rescue society), they mostly have rabbits, hamsters, hedgehogs, rats, etc, but also occasionally dogs that are already bunny friendly. you don't want to take any chances.

they also have lots of bunny parties, etc.

here's the site: http://smallanimalrescue.org/
here's their forum: http://sarsbc.proboards32.com/

I know what you mean, PIPP. I worry that they are going to multiply and end up over populated. :(

On a great note: It's fair week!!!!! Lots of bunnies and guess what doe had a litter of 6 cute babies 2 days ago????? Oh yeah, a mini-rex!

I played with a big rex last night that looked like Henry..... he was happy that I was rubbing his head...... he didn't care who he looked like! :P
