Title: Surprise New Arrivals

Lanna - March 20, 2006 06:20 AM (GMT)
I cant tell you how surprised I was this morning to find two little squirming, squeaking wrigglies in Olivia's nest box.

Yes, I bred her and knew she was pregnant. She was due the 16th and today is the 20th. I know that's not that unusual...until you hear the rest.

I went out the 15th to check on her and give more hay...if needed...for her nest. When I got out there she'd delivered two babies. They were dead on the wire. She hadnt pulled fur and it didnt look like she'd tried to clean the babies up at all.

It really looked like one had gotten stuck. :( The other looked like a peanut.

I took her out to check her...and yes there were more babies in there. I couldnt feel movement at all. I've never had a doe have kits days apart and any of them survive. I did think these were dead and I was taking her to the vet tomorrow if she hadnt passed them.

I'm so glad theyre alive!!

:D

Thanks everyone.

Bo.... :P ...They look tort. I was hoping for a chestnut...but tort's great as long as theyre healthy! They were born with a bit of fur...I guess from being late.

Both look very healthy. They squeak a lot...and are very active. I brought them in and only take them out to feed since there's only two of them and it's cold here right now. In a few days I'll leave them with mom (Olivia) since they'll have a bit of fur..and she pulled TONS of fur. Poor girl is nakie now...maybe I should have brought her in too.

At feeding time this afternoon Olivia pulled even more fur. I guess she wants to be positive her babies are warm. Hubby says she knows there's only two so she thinks they need extra. I hope she remembers that she needs a little herself.

I dont have any names. I was so bummed thinking that I'd lost them all that I havent even thought about names. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum? Just kidding!

I'll try to get some pics in a few days. I would say tomorrow but I'm taking hubby back to the Dr so it'll be another long day. It'll be a few weeks before we know if either of them are fuzzy. B)

I'm so glad she had some more, sorry about the first two. :( My Fuzzies always pull themselves nakie too, they look like little poodles! They're good mommies, most of the time!

Can't wait to see if there is a Fuzzy in our midst... :innocent:

I would bring them all in just because it's like so special! I hope everything goes perfectly with these babies and Olivia, bless her little heart! She must have been hurting for those days waiting for the other two to be born :(

Lanna,

on March 15th I bred my Castor doe to a broken black buck. My buck is only 7 months old and my Doe was already a Sr. My question is this: Do you think that he was doing it right? LOL.. I kept an eye on him while they were breeding but I think he was uh, "aiming" too high. Now BunnyLover and I are waiting with baited breathes! Gosh, I'm so worried that when it comes time to put a nest box I won't ever find anything! I kept breeding those two for about two days. Ya think?? LOL.. Well, I know there's not a whole lot you can tell me since you were not here but maybe some words of encouragement?? I am planning on palpating my doe on the 30th and hope I can figure out what I'm doing! Congrats on your two kits. I am happy for you.

thanks,
Amy

Jsut to let you know fiver but a 7 month old buck is a senior. Your a senior if you passed 6 months on a mini rex.

Amy...

If ya bred her to him for two days chances are that he got it right at least once and once is all it takes. If this was his first breeding he may have aimed too high a time or two but I think he probably figured it out. I'd say the odds are good but you'll have to wait and see. Ive bred does to bucks and known they got it right but no babies. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
