Title: Now I know what it feels like..
StarLight - March 17, 2006 11:11 PM (GMT)
to be spurred. I've been spurred many times, but never in the face.
Today I went to feed Mr. Attitude, who is a big rooster whos spurs are very long. I bent down to put the food in the bowl, I always keep him in front and watch him because he didn't get his name for a reason, but today I guess I didn't watch enough and he spurred me right in the face just missing my eye. It hurt so bad! It is still throbbing. Now I'll probably end up with a bruise under my eye. Heres a picture of him..You can see the size of his spurs, thats on both feet. Good thing I I trim them.Im still mad at him.

Random post but im bored lol.

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't know anything about chickens....so what does it mean when you say you got spurred? He kicked you in the face? :(

The spurs are the long claw or nail on the back of the foot I believe! Though I dont know anything about chickens either!! LOL

See that big white thing off the one foot there sort of to the back? That's a spur. It's not soft it's HARD and I can't imagine the pain!!!
I know someone who fed roosters and had their jeans torn by those things!
I hope you're ok Starlight!

I'm ok. Mom was fussing at me because he did come extremally close to hitting my eye and that would not have be good. I just have a cut on the side of my face, i bit the inside of my cheek, whatever its called lol and have a big red mark beside my eye which will probably turn into a bruise.

Starlight, do you have any other chickens besides this big bully of a Rooster? I have had many chickens and the reason why they attack the "hand that feeds them" is of course because they are territorial. Anyway, you can have those spurs trimmed but if I were you, I would do a little internet research and find out the who (does it) and the where (can it be done at?) GET THOSE SPURRS TRIMMED BEFORE YOU DO LOSE AN EYE! gosh! None of my roosters ever did that to me and I had plenty of chickens, as a matter of fact I even had incubators and such. (I miss my ducks the most, had them too!) Good luck!

I've been breediong chickens for around 10-11 years.Just the bantams, other than 1 natural hatch of standards, we ordered them. I have around 60. I do trim his spurs every so often to keep them dull and from ramming into his own legs. He is my only aggresive standard that is aggresive towards humans. I trim his spurs myself. I don't trim much off. About half an inch each time and I use a scrapper like thing to dull them so there not short. Good thing to because it would have been worse if they were sharp!
Oh and that picture is old, he looks the same, but that picture was before he had a trimming done.

My aunt used to have this nasty rooster who would TOTALLY protect his hens and property. We were all given strict orders to not make 'suprise' visits and to call to make sure my aunt or uncle were home. If this rooster didn't know you, he'd chase you back to your car by pecking at your ankles/chins till they were black and blue! Luckily that little guy is no longer on the farm!
