Title: deformed blobs???
Description: How did that happen?

Rhapsody - February 7, 2006 11:42 PM (GMT)
Hey, if you've read any of my other posts, you've probally guessed that I have some bred lionheads. Well, about a week before I breed them I breed my holland lop. She wasn't due for another 10 days and I went out to feed today and she had given birth to some "deformed blobs". How the heck did this happen? She didn't pull any hair either...This would be her second litter, so it isn't the first time. Thanks for any replies.

I had a doe that on her 3 litter she delivered 4 healthy babies and one round "blob" I have no idea how it happens but I'm glad I'm not the only one to encounter this :)

Is this just like a large thing of skin? or is it like a bunny with no legs.... I don't mean to be graphic and please NO PICTURES!

I'm trying to get a better idea.

Its called a spontanius abortion. Something was wrong with the fetus, or the mother's body rejected them.

I agree with Ed. Sounds like she aborted them for whatever reason. You could try rebreeding her. It may never happen again.

jojo - February 8, 2006 02:37 PM (GMT)
My doe didn't abort, she caried hers full term (30 days). I just figured this one didn't develop properly.

BBB, I will try to describe what my does looked like. It was as if someone took pink playdough and rolled it into an unperfect ball. It was a mass of bone and tisue. I couldn't see the bone but when I took it out of the nest box(I put gloves on first) I could feel them. I hope that wasn't too graphic. :)

Lanna - February 8, 2006 04:14 PM (GMT)
Jodi...do you think it was just genetically wrong? From the desription it sounds underdeveloped. Could it have died earier in the pregnancy and then "passed" when the other kits were born? Or was it too developed for that?

Bo B Bunny - February 8, 2006 04:26 PM (GMT)
jojo that's exactly what I was picturing, but wanted to be sure. That's interesting to say the least.

Lanna, it was as big as the healthy babies only in a ball form. I figured it kept growing, somehow, just that it was so deformed that I could'nt see legs or ears etc. So yes I would say it was genetically wrong. It was the oddest thing I had ever seen. she has had 2 litters since and I haven't seen anything like it again. I should have taken a picture of it.

BBB, I thought it was interesting too. I now wish I had taken a picture of it but it didn't even cross my mind. I just stared at it for a long time in surprise trying to figure out what happened then I just threw it away.

TinysMom - February 8, 2006 07:40 PM (GMT)
Wow...I have never experienced such a thing and hope I never have to....I agree that it sounds like an abortion or something.

I'm so sorry you had to experience this - good luck with future litters!

OK, I guess I didnt check back in time to see wat was going on in this post. But yea, I guess it was an abortion kinda thing. Makes sense. Just hope I never have to see it again, it was pretty discusting...

Bo B Bunny - February 8, 2006 11:49 PM (GMT)
You know, if it doesn't happen again, I wonder if you might contact an exotics/rabbit vet and see if they would like it to study? You never know what might help in advancing someone's education.

You mean give them the deformed blobs? Well....they've kinda been...."disposed" of. I took care of that about 5 minutes after I found them...

bunnylover52691 - February 9, 2006 12:56 AM (GMT)
Im sorry, I bet you were looking forward to having fun little babies all over the place! :((

Rhapsody - February 9, 2006 11:34 PM (GMT)
Oh gosh yes. I have my 1st lionhead litter due in 2 weeks and I'm about to die. I was planning these babes could hold me throught till then since they were due a week b4 anything else. LOL. But I guess I'll just have to wait. It's so sad though...I wanted some lil lops... :(

bunnylover52691 - February 10, 2006 06:22 PM (GMT)
R U going to rebreed?

jojo - February 10, 2006 10:12 PM (GMT)
with my rabbit I did rebreed her(after the live babies were 8wks old) and she has had healthy babies and no blobs since.

Rhapsody - February 10, 2006 11:16 PM (GMT)
I am going to rebreed her eventually but not right now because I think that she lost some weight during the whole thing so i'm going to let her rest up for awhile first. ;)

bunnylover52691 - February 11, 2006 03:20 AM (GMT)
Well lets us know when you rebreed and bring lots of pics ;) We expecting :D

Kismet - February 19, 2006 04:44 PM (GMT)
I'm so sorry to hear that....

BunBuns - February 19, 2006 05:01 PM (GMT)
so sorry to hear that. do you think the "blobs" had anything to do with her death, they could have piosioned her slowly if they were dead in side of her. the same thing happened to my friends lil dog she gave birth to a bunch of "blobs" and about a month or two later she died the vet told them the "blobs" were in her to long and toxins started leaking from them inside her and her body absorbed the toxins.

Rhapsody - February 19, 2006 07:03 PM (GMT)
I have no clue what happened....she just slowly started to stop eating.... :boohoo:
