Title: Why...
Description: Human vs. other mammals

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a "debate," but I didn't know where else to put it.

Elly was sleeping next to me, and she often sleeps on her back, like this:

So I was thinking about how cute her bald little tummy was, and then I started asking myself...

Why is it that a lot of mammals have the least amount of hair where humans DO tend to have hair???

All our dogs have no hair "down there," if you know what I mean. They also have sparser fur on their chins, whereas men have hairy chins.

There must be a reason. What is it? :dunno:

That's a very good question and I dont have a clue.

I'm taking Baby for her spay soon. I think I'm going to ask the vet.

I was saying exactly the same thing to Delphinum the other day!

All of our pets are the same (well, apart from the fish)...

I have a theory:

- Humans have hair on all the bits that are especially important (i.e. on the head, "down there"). This helps to maintain body temperature and perhaps provides a modicum of protection for the "bit" in question.

- Mammals have hair everywhere else. This keeps their body temperature high, so they need to keep their important bits cool instead!

This may also explain why men go bald as they get older. Once they hit 30, they don't use their brain any more, so it doesn't need protecting... Or maybe that's just me! ;)
