Title: Olivia.....
Lanna - January 18, 2006 04:51 AM (GMT)
Well, she's 5.5 months old now so it's down to the wire. In two weeks she'll be a senior and need to be bred...or sold.
I want to keep her....but I still dont have a buck for her...and wont be able to get one soon most likely.
I could hold off breeding her for another two months or so...but Ive read that there's higher incidence of kindling problems the older the doe gets...and to never breed a doe after a year old for the first time.
So...I'm asking for opinions here.
I'm *considering* breeding her to Jacob...and since she's technically a fuzzy holland...both her parents are hollands...it might not be a bad idea.
Jacob was Ollie's daddy...so there's a chance of more fuzzies there...but a chance of some normal furred hollands too.
The other option would be to put her up for sale.
What would you do?

P.S. I dont know if she has AFL in the lines...I dont know who the AFL lines out there so I thought I'd list her lines here too......
Saynora's
Cox's
THF
Woodmont's
LF
Camelot's
Ormond's
Warlow's

I would do it only if you don't plan on breeding the babies back into your herd.. because you could have rabbits for several generations hiding that gene, and then one day it will pop up in the nicest babies you will ever have born, LOL. I know Campo breeds fuzzies into their Hollands, which seems to be where the problem comes from. If you want to breed her just so she has been bred, then go ahead and go for it. The babies can be sold and used for AFL breeding still, and can be shown as AFLs as well. :)
I don't think she will have problems though not being bred, if you breed her by a year. I have bred one doe that was over a year and she did not have any problems, and I have bred a doe that had not been bred in 7 months before as well without problems. Amaya is almost a year old and she still hasn't been bred.

Well if you do decide to breed her soon and she ends up with normal haired Hollands that you don't want to have in your herd, you could sell them as pets. We already know that Jacob passes his amazing personality on to his babies and I'm sure any pet owner would be thrilled to have one of their babies!

Thanks Guys. Ya'lls opinions mean a lot.
I'm still deciding what to do. I really want to keep Olivia so I'm leaning towards breeding her to Jacob or George. Both throw awesome babies...and theyre full brother and both carry the fuzzy gene. I'll let ya'll know when I decide.
Nichole...I agree and that's why I'm hesitant to breed her into my hollands...but I do believe she could improve type on my babies...she has the fullest, nicest HQs in the whole herd. (That's including my best bucks) However..she does not have any Campo's in her lines...and both her parents were normal furred Hollands...so I'm assuming that Campo isnt the only one breeding fuzzy genes in.
Also...She isnt the only one with the fuzzy gene. Jacob, George, and Zoey definitely carry it also. So, I wont be breeding in something that's not already there. And I can work into breeding the fuzzy out of the hollands after this breeding.
If I decide to breed her I would, of course, not breed the fuzzy babies back into my hollands...and eventually I will get her a buck.

Hmm... I think you should go ahead and do it. What do you have to loose? Try them out and see how the babies turn out.
I've heard of Camelot's and Saynora's I think those are holland breeders they may breed fuzzies though I know they have awsome rabbits. The others are a question for Kismet

I would definitely give her a try with Jacob or George. Like you said, you won't be breeding anything in that isn't there already, and you could always use any Fuzzys that pop up in the future with the AFLs.
I wouldn't recommend waiting longer than 7 months if at all possible, I've had nothing but problems breeding first time does older than that, but that's just my experience.
I know Saynora and Campo's both breed Fuzzies into the Hollands and vice versa (so does Hobbs if any of you have her lines) I'm not sure about the other ones but I don't recognize any of the other lines as Fuzzy breeders. I'm guessing its probably all fuzzy Holland through her pedigree. Those make great foundation bunnies though.

Thanks Rae and Lauren.
Lauren...Olivia's dad is a Saynora buck...Saynora's Modest Mouse. Jacob and George are off a Campo buck, Campo's Lenny. (Who's listed a lynx but we all know he's fawn.) They both are 75% Campo bucks. I guess that explains where all the fuzzy comes from. George has always had cottony fur...it's just short. I doubt he would ever win anything if I showed him cause he's small, and his fur.
I've also experienced problems with breeding does after they hit a certain age. On any doe Ive waited past 6.5 months they were either VERY hard to get bred or had dead litters. I can handle the "not taking" but I dont want any dead litters.
