Title: Nesting!!
slrabbits - January 4, 2006 01:35 AM (GMT)
Anemone got her nestbox last night and has started making her nest like a good little mommy. I am so excitied.. kits at last!!! :D I will keep y'all updated.. she is due Saturday, though she tends to go the night before, so we will see. I palpated her yesterday to make sure she was pregnant, and felt at least two kits.. I don't think she is going have a big litter like last time though. Maybe 3, 4 tops (watch her have like 9 now, LMAO).

 Yaye!! Keep us posted on how it goes!
jojo - January 4, 2006 02:41 AM (GMT)
yay more kits!!!! gotta love those babies :D
slrabbits - January 4, 2006 04:51 PM (GMT)
What a little brat! I think I just jinxed myself by posting.. she destroyed her nest last night. :???: Not too worried though.. I have had girls do it before, still plenty of time left.

Nope, she isn't due until Saturday so I won't start watching till Friday night. Unfortunantly it is supposed to be cold Friday so I am hoping she goes Saturday when it is supposed to warm up a good deal.
But some happy, random news.. I got my two BEW does mixed up, so I palpated the wrong girl. Stacey sent me an e-mail telling me I had them mixed up so I went ahead and palpated the other girl (Waterfall), and there are babies in there! She is due the 13th. :D
Lanna - January 5, 2006 03:09 AM (GMT)
  I'm so happy for you! It's about time you had some good news.
slrabbits - January 5, 2006 03:14 AM (GMT)

-Nova (Blue) x Clinton (Broken Chinchilla)- Due 02/03/06- First home bred doe that I have bred! Hoping for some Squirrels. :narf:

It's possible.. just depends on how lucky I get in the gene toss, LOL.
Bo B Bunny - January 5, 2006 04:04 AM (GMT)
She needed to practice for the big day! ;)
GO NOVA! We gotta have some really good babies with you and Clinton since your daddy is mixed up and all....

That's what makes him Opie!
slrabbits - January 5, 2006 10:55 PM (GMT)
Well she decided to build another nest today.. what an odd one she is.
Bo B Bunny - January 6, 2006 05:51 AM (GMT)
Practice Makes Perfect. :D
slrabbits - January 7, 2006 02:17 PM (GMT)
OMG, what a pain in the butt! She ruined her nest AGAIN last night.
No babies yet.. she is due today. I was rather glad she didn't go last night though.. it got down in the 20's. It's supposed to be high 60's today though. :D She is cleaning herself alot "down there", so maybe early afternoon we will have some!
Bo B Bunny - January 7, 2006 04:06 PM (GMT)
She's going to build that nest again - right before she has them LOL!
slrabbits - January 7, 2006 04:16 PM (GMT)
Oh I am sure she will. My rabbits like to drive me insane. :P I am a bit worried though, she seems really distressed. I was just sitting and watching her, and it looks like she is having contractions.. I am worried because she has not even pulled fur yet. I hope everything goes smoothly. :( I have someone coming to my rabbitry today, and now I wish I hadn't.. I don't really want people out there if she hasn't had them.
Lanna - January 7, 2006 04:30 PM (GMT)
Can you call that person and ask them to come another day? Or, if theyre coming to pick up a rabbit have it ready for them away from the rabbitry.
It may not bother her but I know a lot of breeders dont allow visitors when they have a doe due.
slrabbits - January 7, 2006 04:35 PM (GMT)
She already left early this morning to come. She is bringing her kids but I told her last night if she hadn't delivered that the kids could not come in. I know she wanted to look at what does I had for sale, but maybe I will just bring them up in carriers so she can look at them.
Bo B Bunny - January 7, 2006 08:26 PM (GMT)
I definitely wouldn't allow the kids in. I think I would make that even if she does have them! She might freak or something since she would have just had them - most likely it will be late tonight.
Don't worry - I remember hearing that they can pull the fur, build the nest and have the babies in a couple of hours time.
slrabbits - January 7, 2006 11:29 PM (GMT)
Well.. still no babies. I really don't like palpating this late in pregnancy, but I did anyway just to be sure. She is most definantly pregnant, as I felt at least one fully developed fetus in there. That leads me to believe I might have written the wrong date down. :brow: But I am pretty sure she will have them by tomorrow night. Fingers are crossed! And I am glad she waited because it will not be very cold tonight.
TinysMom - January 7, 2006 11:49 PM (GMT)
I always hate waiting for new babies 'cause it seems like my does decide to cross their legs and make me wait a day or so longer just to remind me I'm not the boss...
Anyway - I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she has those babies SOON!
slrabbits - January 8, 2006 02:42 AM (GMT)
Thank you! I have actually never had a doe go over her due date, so I suppose I am a tad impatient, LOL. Come on girl!! She is just sitting on top of the nestbox looking at me like I am insane, LOL. Hopefully I will get up to a nestbox full of babies tomorrow...
jojo - January 8, 2006 03:24 AM (GMT)
My fingers are crossed for your new babies to come tonight with no problems XXXXXX :D
Bo B Bunny - January 8, 2006 05:48 AM (GMT)
Umm ..... Nichole? It's tomorrow now. :poke:
slrabbits - January 8, 2006 01:37 PM (GMT)
GRR.. still no babies. And she couldn't have picked a better night to have them than last night.. it was 52*F!! I swear to god there is at least one kit in there.. I could distinctly make out the head and body. She just has to be a pain in the butt because the other two litters from her were right on time. <_<
Lanna - January 8, 2006 03:48 PM (GMT)
 I know it's not funny Nichole. I think it's like someone else said...they make you wait just to remind you who's boss.
Crossing fingers for babies soon.
Kismet - January 8, 2006 04:10 PM (GMT)
Is the kit moving around when you feel it, Nichole? It could be a fetal giant if theres only one, if it is it might be gone already.... :(
slrabbits - January 8, 2006 05:32 PM (GMT)
I really wasn't wanting to stress her out, so once I found one I didn't probe for more. I definantly hope it isn't a fetal giant though. :(
slrabbits - January 8, 2006 06:29 PM (GMT)
Update: Still no babies. I took her out to palpate again, and it took me forever to find a baby.. however the one I did fine was moving, and did not like me touching it, LOL. They are still up high in the abdomen, not down in the birth canal area yet. I flipped her over to try and see if she was lactating yet, but ended up getting kicked in the face. <_< Ouch. But she has to be somewhat close because the fur on her stomach will come out easily if you pull it. Sooo... come on girl!!!
Lanna - January 8, 2006 09:33 PM (GMT)
Maybe tonight then.
*crosses fingers*
Bo B Bunny - January 9, 2006 12:28 AM (GMT)
Their hair loosens for them? Omg I can't wait! come on babies!

Yepp. Near the end of gestation they release a hormone that makes the hair loosen. Thank goodness...if you've ver seen a doe pulling fur...it'd be very painful otherwise!!
slrabbits - January 9, 2006 02:14 AM (GMT)
*sigh* Still nothing... what a pain in the behind!!

slrabbits - January 9, 2006 05:16 PM (GMT)
Nope, nothing. So what should I do now?
1) I am afraid that the babies are going to get too large for her to deliver them easily, increasing chances of a stuck kit and trouble for mom. She is one of the smallest does I have, so now I fear for her.
2) Try breeding to induce natural oxytocin (sp?) and take the change of her getting pregnant again and having a bunch of abandoned 31 day old kits down the road.
3) Try to find an area vet to give her a oxytocin injection. However there are no knowledable rabbit vets around, and I wouldn't even know how much they should be given.
This is frustrating.. are there any foods I can give her that help increase oxytocin at all?
Bo B Bunny - January 9, 2006 06:21 PM (GMT)
What day is this Nichole? Is it 28 to 32 days?
Personally, I would give it til tonight and then breed her again. (if it's day 32)

I used to always think that their milk would dry up if they were bred back to back, but it's actually not true. There was a big mess with fostering Aspen's babies over to Tara (who lost her litter and was going crazy) and Aspen was rebred to Bambi, but Tara's milk dried up a couple days later so Aspen's babies had to go back to her. I freaked out and posted on rabbitweb about it, and someone told me that their milk won't dry up, it'll just continue through both pregnancies and the babies will wean about a week before the new litter comes.
I was worried about it, but the babies were just fine - all lived and have grown up to be nice healthy bunnies. It's not life threatening, but it wears the doe out quick, so give her a nice long break after this if she does end up getting pregnant again.
