Title: Genetic Engineering
Description: Your Opinion?

WormAct - December 30, 2005 07:37 AM (GMT)
As a researcher and scientist it interests me to know the various public views on these many subjects, since the public's opinion is what either fuels or stifles these areas of development and research.

And also for any staunch religious folk opposed solely based on religion here is an actual Catholic document that opened my eyes very much (and I am not a staunch Catholic) and I hope it does the same for you http://www.lifeissues.net/writers/doc/doc_...ransplant1.html

So what are you views on things such as (and I will provide brief descriptions):

Pharming - harvesting human proteins through secreted animal milk that can treat people with deadly blood disorders that do not allow them to clot properly and several other illnesses.

Organ harvesting (Also known as Xenotransplantation) - The process of growing organs in minature pigs to supply the demand for the many organ recipients on lists that are miles long. (This particular technology will not be available for a minumum of 10 years)

GMO Crops - Modify plants to have some sort of benefit, such as increased nutritional benefit, or natural resistance to pests.

Cloning of Animals - This can benefit in the case of finding a superior quality of animal and then cloning it. Instead of generations of selective breeding and having to use hormone therapies and such things to get your desired affect. (I apologize for no links, I only have personal access to the articles, but you can subscribe to various Journals such as Cell or Nature to read them)

Stem Cell Research - Which no longer have to come from a human source. Human stem cells can be cultured from a simple skin flake. They provide the basis of all potential cures for current and undiscovered illness. (Again I apologize for the lack of articles.)

I could go on for hours listing other topics, but these are pretty much the heavy hitters as of current.

I'm apathetic about all of those except for stem cell research which I'm definitely FOR. The others I haven't researched enough to care. Or maybe it's that I don't care enough to research.

I don't know enough about the others to have an opinion, but I am totally against cloning animals or humans. Humans should not have that power. It is playing God.
