Title: Darla has babies kicking
Kismet - December 23, 2005 06:35 AM (GMT)
I totally was not expecting this. She is due tommorow....
When I was trying to get her to have the stillborn kit, I had to put her in with Muscat every half hour so she would produce some natural oxytocin and kindle. She was being so rotten with him I didn't expect her to lift for him but she did. I figured it was a fluke and since she also hadn't had her "litter" yet, I didn't expect her to take...but I waited 2 weeks and palpated anyway. Felt nothing...put her in with Mus and she wanted nothing to do with him. At that point (Tara had missed too) I just figured whatever, I'm just not going to get far with 2 does and I'll try them again in a few months and maybe it'll go better.
Well I thought I felt something moving when I felt Darla a few days ago...I had lost track of dates completely, not expecting her to have anything. I put a nestbox in just in case...and felt her again just a few minutes ago and there is definitely kicking. Checked the date that I put her in with Mus to get her to have her kit and it was the 22nd...which makes her due tommorow. It couldn't have been the second time I bred her because she would need 2 more weeks and those are definitely "we're ready to be borrnnnnnn" kicks.
I really, really hope everything goes better this time. I could really use a lift right now and baby bunnies just might do it for me.

I don't even know why I bother anymore....I should just call them pets and forget it.

I'm so sorry for you - but I want to encourage you to keep trying. I had a doe that lost her first litter she had for another breeder. She lost her second litter here (we were having food problems and for a one week time period we had a 50% loss rate on babies - so were other breeders who used the same food I later found out). I gave her one more try. This time - she built a beautiful nest and had six lovely babies. One died on the second day...but the others are all healthy.
I don't know what else to tell you - but sometimes you have to keep trying and some does may take a bit longer.
I know though how hard it is to lose babies. During that one week where we lost so many babies I cried so much I thought I'd never stop crying. Either kits would be stillborn or mamas couldn't nurse because their milk didn't come in or whatever. We lost 30 babies in that one week time period - but once we switched the feed, the problems stopped. (We feel fortunate as a breeder friend lost ten JUNIORS in the same time period - and he's several states away....at least ours were newborn and we hadn't had time to get attached yet). I almost gave up breeding when that happened....till other breeders who knew me talked me out of it.
Now? My nestboxes are full of happy and healthy babies. My success rate is high again (over 95%) as it should be.
So I guess I rambled all of this to say KEEP TRYING! It can go better!!! Don't give up.
