Title: Not Again!
Description: Dogs are back
rabbitrae - December 17, 2005 03:23 PM (GMT)
Those of you who remeber that dogs were attacking my rabbits. Well this morning my little sis when outside and guess what see saw? Two black dogs walking around the rabbit pen. We lucky she had my Labrador with her and he scared them off. No rabbits were killed I guess she got to them in time. Once again my dog saved my rabbits lives and maybe kept the dogs from bitting my sister.
I don't know what I'd do with out him. :)
My sister described them and the sounded like coyote mixed with a black dog.
People often drop off their dogs by my house b/c I live infront of 100 acres of woods. I followed there tracks a ways. There tracks look like coyotes. I hope they won't be back. I'm so worried. :( I've been hearing many other dog attacks on other forums where the dogs like break the door down.

Maybe you should call Animal Control
Lanna - December 17, 2005 06:13 PM (GMT)
I'm sorry Rae. I hope you can figure out how to keep them at bay.
As Cinn said...you could try animal control...they might be able to help you.
Are you in city limits? If so, you could check city ordinances. If you have a leash law...and your city actually enforces it...they might get the dogs rounded up for you.

Oh dear Rae...I wouldn't be able to sleep at night! What kind of precautions can you take? If they do try to break down the door would someone be able to hear it?
:rifle: :rifle: :rifle:
I think you better send Max to me for safe keeping :)
Kismet - December 17, 2005 07:54 PM (GMT)
I would try the cattle electric fence from TSC, just in front of your shed door or around your outside cages. Seems to be the only thing that really keeps them out.
Wooligans - December 17, 2005 08:14 PM (GMT)
There sure have been a lot of dog attacks lately. :( Ditto the electric fence thing. Or can you set traps or poison out (wouldn't want your dog to get into it, though!). Ya know, I like to think my rabbits are safe, but it seems like it's hard to stop a determined pack of dogs.
rabbitrae - December 17, 2005 11:39 PM (GMT)
The animal control around here doesn't do anything. The last dog we caught we shot it. We can't shoot these ones because they run off to fast. The dog we caught was trapped inside our shed.

lol Sometimes it is hard to sleep at night. We wouldn't be able to hear them break down the door the shed is quite a ways away from our house.
lol I just might send max to ya! ;)

It sure does seem that way. The dogs that attacked the rabbitry just did it for fun too. Just cruched them to death and when in the the next kill. Why are they so into killing? It really scares me!
slrabbits - December 18, 2005 05:40 PM (GMT)
Rae, how is your pen set up? Do you have a fence around it? If not, it may be a good time to invest in one before they come back.. you may not be so lucky next time.
If you do have a fence set up, it might be time to invest in a shotgun instead. I don't know about anyone else, but I would not hesitate to shoot any animal trying to get at my rabbits. They are dogs, and their instincts will not tell them to stop trying to get at them. More than likley they will keep coming back until they can get at the rabbits.
rabbitrae - December 18, 2005 06:38 PM (GMT)
THe pen is the rabbit's play pen made of chicken wire. My father has tons of guns he's a hunter so there's no lack of guns here lol We've been talking about putting a picked fence around the rabbits and making the shed doors half doors so we can close the bottom and leave the top open for air. We need to save up the money becuase a fence would be expensive <_<
slrabbits - December 19, 2005 12:17 AM (GMT)
If you go to Home Depot, you can buy a 50ft roll of 1x2 wire for like.. $35. Chicken wire will not keep ANY animal out. You are going to have to put some kind of fencing up to keep the dogs out, or I can almost guarentee you that you will lose more rabbits with those dogs hanging around. You need to make procautions against it while you still can. Dog are my biggest fear.. when you have rabbits you have paid $100+ for (not even including the fact that I would be heartbroken to lose any of my rabbits) you don't want to take any chances.

I agree....it seems like alot of money for just a "precaution" but imagine the heart break you will go through if you lose some or all of your rabbits again, not to mention it's a small expense compared to what you paid for the rabbits. (I think the heartbreak would be worse though :(
rabbitrae - December 19, 2005 01:49 AM (GMT)
I doubt the dogs can break through my hutches. I'm closing the shed doors until I can find something. Heartbreak is the worst. :(

Do the hutches have wire bottoms though? Dogs will tear that right off...(not trying to scare you, just something to look into)
slrabbits - December 19, 2005 03:04 PM (GMT)
If they broke in the first time what makes you think they can not do it again? If dogs are determined enough, they will get through a cage.. be it wood or wire.
rabbitrae - December 19, 2005 09:39 PM (GMT)
Last time they couldn't break into the hutches just the metal cages inside. All they did was pop the doors open

Yes they do but the hutches have boards in them to help prevent sore hocks and they also have hideouts with no wire.

IN this pic look at the locks
the dogs just pushed them open

I now have clip things
Delphinum - December 19, 2005 10:35 PM (GMT)
Aww I hope they don't come back! :( It'd be horrific for the same thing to happen again!
Can you hook up a 9V battery to some wire and put it around the chicken wire? Or is that too cruel do you think? It'd just give them a little shock, but might scare them off.
rabbitrae - December 19, 2005 10:37 PM (GMT)
Too Cruel? HA! :rifle: Not when it invovles my babies!
slrabbits - December 20, 2005 06:07 PM (GMT)
I don't know what to tell you then Rae. You don't seem to be willing to take the procautions needed, so I fear for your rabbits lives. I just hope to god those dogs stay away, and your rabbits stay safe.

I do want to take the procautions needed! I'm simply a youth breeder and I can't affored anything expensive! And my parents arn't into rabbits and don't understand how much I love them!! :(
Cinnabun - December 21, 2005 12:03 AM (GMT)
i remember when this dog tried to get at my Missey girl.. i wasnt home at the time, thank god.. if i were i would have ran out there and beat that dog.. i guess my dad took the BB gun pumped it enough time to go far and hit the dog.. but not break skin. so now that dog knows not to come into my yard again! that was the only time we had a problem with dogs trying to get to Missey, (we have fencing all around. the yard) we just had problems with the darn cats.. but ever since we got britt (we trained her to HATE cats.. like you say "Wheres the kitty cat?!" she'll go NUTS!) we trained her because of the cat issue we have here. Britt one day actually got a cat in her mouth! it was in my backyard, so the cat had it coming to it.. but yeah ever since britt came here, and barked and growled and attack the cats (dont worry i wouldnt let her hurt them badly.. if she did my mom and i would've brought it to the vet) or cased them.. havent seen them around at all.
rabbitrae - December 21, 2005 12:31 AM (GMT)
I do get a few cats here and there but they never bother my pets. My dog likes to chase them but I don't think he would know what to do with one if he caught it. The cats usually spot him comming before he spots them. He's not the brightest but he's saved my rabbits lives so ya gotta give em credit!

You need to get some metal clips like on dog callars and such and put them on the latches and wire. The dogs would not be able to push them open.

If the dog is big/strong enough the dogs will rip right through the wire. I have the pictures of my hutch...outside run...after the dog attacked and killed Precious. The dog ripped the wire out of the bottom of the hutcha nd rolled it back like an upside down sardine can.

they didn't rip the wire but they bent it a little
ILoveNepo - January 2, 2006 08:48 PM (GMT)
Maybe you could put a balnket or somethin over the cages so that the dogs don't see the bunnies in there, or maybe a wood? But if it gets hot that wouldn't be good for the bunnies :???:
Cinnabun - January 2, 2006 11:03 PM (GMT)
There sense of smell is greater than their eyesight. they'd still be able to find the rabbits by the sense of smell
rabbitrae - January 3, 2006 01:37 AM (GMT)
I did that last winter after the first attack I put tarps over them but I can't leave them in the dark with no fresh air again :(
dixonsrabbitry - January 17, 2006 12:21 AM (GMT)
I know how you feel. I lost twenty of my best rabbits to dogs since thanksgiving morning. Thanks giving was the fist attack. We had a wild dog pack move into the area. They took shelter in my garage, and made dinner out of my rabbits. totally demolished everything that was in the building they could get to. I had bedding, poop and cages all over the place. So we took care of the dead ones, and fixed up the front of it to keep them out. Three weeks later they attacked again. Them suckers went right through a barracaded door. They ruined my staw bedding, and this time pulled some toes off the surviving rabbits. Totally ransacked everything again, after I had gotten it all cleaned up from the first attack. So we fixed the door again. They came back two nights later. I heard them. When I looked out the window at my garage I heared the one dog barking from iside it, and the other two were circling it trying to get in. The first dog had trapped itself in there. So I called 911. And the police dept came down and shot and killed it instead of taking it to animal control. They picked up a second dog that was running wirt them a couple nights later. The third one is still at large. Its been hit by my electric fence a couple of times.
But anyhow heres what I did, and what you need to do. Measure out the area that you need to put a fence up around. Go to tsc tractor supply and get yourself some hog panels, electric fence posts, insulators, an eight foot ground pole(with attachment), fence wire(both insulated and regular)a post driver, and a charger. They have two mile chargers for $20.00. All together its gonna cost about $150. but its well worth it and will protect your rabbits. cause if yu just got the electric fence, that wont do it alone. Those dogs could go right throught it.
What you need to do is take those hog panels and fence posts, and build a pen all the way around your rabbits. Then you run one strand of electric fence wire a good six inches or so around the outside of the fence. And run another six inches off the top of it. Take that ground pole, and drive about five feet into the ground with the driver at least two feet, but no more then twenty feet away from the building. The closer to the building, the stronger the charge will be. That pole will give it a stronger charge, and help prevent the charger from burning the building down.
Run an insulated ground wire from that to the charger. run another insulated wire from that charger to the regular fence wire. And make sure both strands of fence wire are interconnected to each other. Then turn that sucker on. Also youll want to make sure you get some hooking fence wire insulators, and hook them into your fence somewhere. That way you can get in and out of there without getting shocked.
That works on keeping dogs out of your rabbitry. They can't go through the electric fence. And they cant climb the hog panels either because of the eletric fence.
Ive got that setup across the front of my garage. It works wonders.

BTW they will be back again. Once they've killed they always come back...
