Title: The world has a new Pope.

I was at work when the smoke turned to white, the bells rang and I had only just turned the television off just before the time the smoke rose.
I'm not sure how I feel about Benedict XVI, it's hard to accept someone new after John Paul II.
He's pretty tough. We'll see.

Bo i agree with you he has some big shoes to fill and as much as everyone is glad that there is a new pope .....i think everyone is still a worried that he will not fullfill there needs like John Paul did ...

Since I said this in another thread... how do they 'elect' or decide on the new pope? I wasn't born when John Paul II took over, so I don't know the whole process... do all the Cardinals decide amongst themselves?

I'm curious about this too!

I touched on it in the other thread as well lol.
When a Pope needs to be elected, the Conclave of Cardinals must first grieve. They cannot meet until I think 15 days after the death of the Pope (I'm not sure we've ever had a Pope not die to leave office.)
At that time they will have services and will have some ideas of who they want to be pope (actually who God is guiding them to be Pope really)... and they go into meetings in a secured room. They then discuss the things I assume and take a vote. If they meet 2/3rds vote that is the elected Pope and they will send up a white smoke. If the vote fails to make a decision, they send up black smoke. Then, they do the procedures over again. Usually it's 2 votes on the first day. Then 2 votes in the morning and 2 in the afternoon on following days.
After they have voted so many times if there is not a 2/3 vote the Cardinal in charge can officially make 1/2 plus 1 vote make the vote count. Then they vote again.

Thanks for that Bo, you learn something new every day! :) It's interesting to know how these rituals came about too... like who was the first to say "well, white smoke is yes, and black smoke is no..." When I have time, one day, I'll research it!

Yep, I need to do some of that research as well!
