Title: Sable Squirrel?
slrabbits - December 1, 2005 11:47 PM (GMT)
Just curious.. is it possible to get a Sable Squirrel at all? Or will the dilute gene act differently when the Sable and Chinchilla gene are present?

I've never heard of them before but I think its possible then again I'm no genetics wiz lol

It would be a smoke pearl chin...because sable is not dilute, and squirrel is - so it would be impossible to have the tips of the fur non-dilute and the rest of it dilute. It's a really pretty color, kinda looks like an opal but with shading and white chin markings...I'll have to see if I can find a pic of it for you.

Interesting. I would love to see a picture if you are able to find one. :D
I don't know if I like this Sable Gene or not, LOL. My two Sable Chins look nothing like each other.. but if one isn't a Sable Chin I have no idea what it is.

Okay got one...it's a Britt but it'll do
http://bluemoonrabbitry.bravehost.com/guide.htmlKinda reminds me of a shaded squirrel.
I agree with you though - the sable gene in chins would give me HEADACHES! LOL
They all look so similar! And it's hard to breed out, too.... <_<

Ohh.. that is pretty!!
When asking what to breed the Sable Chins to, I was told go Shaded and stick to shaded only, or go agouti and stick to agouti only. Since I am not breeding Sable into my Chins, I am going the shaded route. Hopefully I can eventually cull the shaded chins out completley.
These two are driving me insane though!! They look nothing like each other.. Devante looks Chocolate, and Pheonix looks like some kind of dilute. It's crazy!

Thanks for the link Lanna.
I just don't know what these guys are anymore. Devante just got done molting.. he is now a very dark chocolate color, and no longer looks to have shading (the dark head and ears, lighter body). The Chocolate Chinchillas I have seen pictures of though are not as dark as he is. Clinton has a Chocolate Chin grandparent, but Anemone does not have any Chocolate in her pedigree (though there is a REW).
Devante looks to be a dilute. I know Clinton carries dilute, but I am not sure if Anemone does.. again she has that REW in there, and I have no idea what that introduced.. but both parents have the potential of carrying dilute. Devante looked like a Black Chin until he got older, then he started turning a rusty color around 5 months and is now the chocolate color that he is. Pheonix has always been light, but now is looking almost blue-ish. He still has the shading effect to him though.. dark head/ears, lighter body.
From what I know right now from just pedigrees and offspring, these are the genotypes of the parents. I haven't test breeded for any genes, this is just what came out of the pairs:
Anemone: aaB_CcchlD_Ee
Clinton: AaB_cchdDdEe
That still doesn't really help though. I don't know if either one carries chocolate, or if Anemone carries dilute. Sable Chins are still a definante possiblity, so there is no way to genetically rule them out at this point. All I have to go on is phenotype.
I don't know.. I don't like this gene anymore, LOL.
EDIT: Breeded.. hah! New word.

I contacted the owner of the REW, she was aaBBccDdEe.. so chocolate is not a possiblity. She also said Anemone was 100% PW breeding.. anyone know what that means? LOL.
EDIT: PW = Pointed White??
