Many of you have not heard about this story but it's very sad in general but for me it's also because a friend of mine was on the team of doctors who treated him. :(

KABUL, Afghanistan -- The death Friday of an Afghan boy who underwent heart surgery in Indianapolis last month has stunned Indiana National Guard medics who had helped care for him.

Sixteen-month-old Qudratullah Wardak died at home in a refugee village outside the capital, the military said. He had been treated at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis after Indiana National Guard troops in Afghanistan and the Rotary Club learned of his condition and his family's inability to find care.

Qudrat Wardak died Friday, just two days after returning to Afghanistan.

Capt. Michael Roscoe, an Army medic who examined the boy's body, said that the cause of death was unknown. Afghan culture does not allow for autopsies.

Roscoe said that the boy, known as Qudrat, may have suffered arrhythmia -- abnormal beating of the heart. Also, rigors of the boy's recent travels -- he had just left Indianapolis on Monday and returned to Afghanistan on Wednesday -- may have taken a toll.

Roscoe, who diagnosed heart trouble in Qudrat last year, leading to his March surgery in Indianapolis, said he had checked on Qudrat on Thursday.

He told RTV6's Stacia Matthews that the boy on Thursday "looked better than he has ever looked." Qudrat's death came as a shock to Roscoe and other Guard medics.

This is such heart breaking news. To be brought into this world with such complications and with the technology we have today could not even save this child. The heartbreak for this family has to be overwhelming to them and also to the team of surgens who became part of their lives over such a short period of time. My heart goes out to them and its a sad sad day.

11 years ago Alissa my daughter was in the same situtation and she luckily survived open heart surgery and recovered from a stroke. A parent should never never lose a child.

I know Deb. It breaks my heart and it's been horrible for all of the members of the Natl Guard who found him.

He was such a sweet little boy! His dad was so nice.... it's just really really tragic! It seems the travel and excitement was just too much for him. :(
