Title: Tough Situation
slrabbits - July 12, 2005 02:59 AM (GMT)
Ok.. so this is my last year in High School. Next year is college.. but the more I think about it and try to plan it out, the less I want to go. I hate school with a passion.. why would I want to go for another 2-4 years?
I want to open my own business.. which you do not need a college degree for. Most of the courses I would take in college I have already taken.. and I am a quick learner and am very good at teaching myself what I need to know when I need to know it. I already have pretty much every aspect of my business planned out except one- money. I don't know if the banks would even consider giving me a loan at 18.. and I know my mom wouldn't help me if I didn't go to college.
I honestly feel like even another 2 years of school would be a waste of my time when I already know most of what I need to know. Yes.. there are some things I need to learn, and I am more than willing to learn them. Heck.. I would be willing to do a couple online classes if it meant staying out of the classroom. But I would rather do it hands on in the real world than in a school classroom. I just feel like I would be putting my life on hold rather than going forward with what I want to. It's a waste of time and money in my opinion.
:( It just sucks..

Everyone hates high school at some point.
College is very different.
There is no guarantee that your business will fly. Cover your butt. Go to college. You'll regret it later if you don't. Two years is nothing when you think about the rest of your life.

im in the same situation as you Nicole.. i've been plotting good Payign jobs that you dont need to go to a real college, but a Tech College.. or no College at all.. but its hard to find one. i've been thinking of Modeling since you dont need to go to college for that. and i hate College.. i'll prob do online classes once i figure out what i wanna do.. lol..

Talking from experience....
Online classes aren't all that easy! I'm doing them right now through my community college and you REALLY have to pace yourself. You can study and stuff at your own pace however you still have deadlines. You can cheat and use your book but that just cheats yourself in the long run. I'm no longer doing online classes unless it's for a computer class. You REALLY have to read the text. So maybe rethink online classes because I sure am!

Took the words straight out of my mouth! You may think you hate school at this point, but up until now, your experience with school has only been up through high school. I say give college a try, at least. I despised high school myself, but I really enjoyed college.
You could always try majoring in business or something related to what you intend to focus your business on? Just a suggestion. College can be great -- not just because of the courses, but because you meet so many people along the way who can be great connections later on!

A business qualification would help you get investors or banks to loan you the money.
Personally, I hated college and uni... it was just like school for me and full of the same people I went to school with... but then I went to one close to home so that's why.
I was studying with the Open University, you do it all at home and submit essays every month. It's really hard going, which is why I had to give it up this year with all the other stuff going on just now (it was 32 hours per week studying time), and costs alot too. But I do intend on restarting this February.
Uni isn't for everyone... but you can always quit if you don't like it... :)

I hated High school. Thought it was the biggest waste of time. I didnt learn anything.. Just learned about how clicky and stupid other kids can be. But college is a whole other thing. you take what you want. everything is up to you.. So what you should do if you really want to try to pursue your own buisness is maybe take a few business classes.... online or at a local school.... or maybe find something else that you can do part time to fall back on. I think everyone should always have a few areas they can branch out from incase one doesnt work out for you. there are so many opportunities in the world. but a few classes cant hurt. whats good about college is you can take the things you are interested in and no one is FORCING you to do it to graduate..... ;)

I agree with everything Bo said, especially the last part.

Actually if I go to college it will be here in town.. it's just an off section of Arkansas State.. there isn't a ton of cool classes- just the basics. There are only I think 2,000 students here, or something like that. If I go to college I will have to work full time for those two years doing something I am sure I do not want to do.
Yeah.. things could go downhill and my business might not work out.. if that would happen the exact same thing as I said above would happen. I would get to go back to college and work full time at some job that isn't worth it while going there.
Luckily for me I live in a town that is projected to quadruple business in the next 4 years. That means lots of business oportunites. And not having a "real" pet store around here would give me a great edge. Which leads to another problem.. if I wait someone else will come along and take the opportunity I could have had. Someone will come along sooner rather than later and open one if there isn't another around.
In any case.. I don't think I really have a choice in the matter. If I don't go to college I will be disowned by my family.. plain and simple. It's stupid. :tsk:
floppy - July 13, 2005 06:39 PM (GMT)
what? disowned? come on now. thats just silly. you are getting to be a grown adult. How can they disown you for making a decision about yourown life?
Well who am i to say... sorry if that sound harsh. i dont know your family or anything but they really should respect your decision and back you no matter what.
Maybe just take some buisness classes and really research the pet store thing if you truly think it might be a good opportunity for you.... Just always make sure you have something to fall back on just incase..

My mom and step dad do not care about what I want.. only how they look. If all their kids don't go to college apparently it will give them some kind of bad rap. My step dad is already sprayed I moved to Arknasas. Now he gets to tell his business buddies he has a hill billy daughter. If I don't go to college my mom will stop paying my insurence and will not help with any bills.
See why I moved out? LOL. They are stuck up jerks.
Soo.. it sucks either way. I think I might just take a year off and go live in the woods, LOL. :P
rabbitrae - July 14, 2005 03:17 PM (GMT)

floppy - July 15, 2005 02:56 PM (GMT)

Ugh. That's sad. Although it seems to me that they should be more ashamed that they made their daughter feel like she had to move out, instead of being concerned that their daughter's a "hill billy" for moving out...
Delphinum - July 15, 2005 06:48 PM (GMT)
Well the thing is college is always going to be there too... There's nothing wrong with going when you're in your 20s, 30s or even your 50s and 60s! LOL
I'm glad I waited later to do my course as I now know what I want to do in life... and not just go and do classes that aren't going to help me in my life. I took International Business Studies with European languages when I started uni at 17... HA HA! What a joke that was?! Now I look back and wonder what on earth I was thinking!? I'd rather do anything but!
Do all your homework for setting up the business (business plan, accounts, that kind of thing) and all your homework for going to college, apply for both (business loans, etc) then take what you think is best... always keep an open mind is probably what I'd say... :)
I hope you'll be happy with whatever you pick as that's the most important thing! :)
floppy - July 15, 2005 06:51 PM (GMT)
exactly... why go to college and just waste time and money on something when you dont really know what you want to do. The school will always be there. Sometimes its nice to just take a year or so off and search yourself...and thats ok too.
