Title: The Nanny State

Delphinum - July 2, 2005 11:20 PM (GMT)
Well as I've noticed in alot of our debates, most people do not prejudice against others even though their views may differ. Alot say "it is not to my taste but the government should not decide on how people live" or words to that effect. That is an opinion I've seen often here.
So... do you believe we live in a 'nanny state'?

The UK government is now going on about compulsary ID cards, which will cost people money (£200-ish) (money they don't have, may I add)... our TV is monitored for swearing and scenes of adult nature(which is understandable up to a point, after the watershed, however, swearing is usually allowed, but not on the BBC :???: I'm sure if I'm up at 11.30pm watching TV I'm old enough to have heard a swear word or two)... Health and safety laws are verging on the ridiculous... even employer conduct is now making it impossible to get rid of staff without fear of repercussions (the NHS never sack someone if they can help it!)... We are not allowed to go 1mph over the speed limit... our every move is tracked on CCTV... and we have to pay our taxes to go to these pen-pushers who do nothing but make up new things to tell us not to do...
Don't drink, don't smoke, don't take drugs, don't speed even in an emergency - that means ambulances too, don't eat high carbs, don't eat low carbs, eat sugar free, don't eat sugar free, eat vegetarian, don't eat soya if you want to get pregnant, eat fish to aid health, don't eat fish more than once a week - it'll kill you....

Do you often just want to scream... "Leave me alone, I'll do what I want to do!!!!"
Nanny state anyone?

Yeah i know what you mean...although wow its not that bad here. people go at least 15 over the 70mph speed limit out of Detroit all the time...when its not a traffic jam <_<

Sure there are need to be some rules...but that's just too many i think.

The more rules, the more rebellious people are sometimes IMO.

hahahahaha...
it is horrible...and its only getting worse...
you just have to take everything you read everything with a grain of salt.
There are some people who are alive today at 110 year old who ate pork fat and lard and smoked like loons and they are still here to tell about it.. So eat what you want... Everything in moderation is my motto.. and that means everything in life. you can never be so sure of anything.
I know for living here in America having "big brother" watching you all the time does not help people. It just makes them more mad and want to rebel more... like a child when you tell them they cant do something they want to do it more.
Do you know that the cops here on Long Island where i live actually sit in their cars and HIDE alongside the bushes of the highway with their radar guns to catch someone speeding just to give them a ticket so they can make their quota?! makes me sick! they are supposed to be there to serve and protect.. not steal from me... oh but thats a whole other topic.....
As far as im concerned they are Theives and crooks with a license and gun to do so.
