Title: Demoscene symbolism
Description: Kefrens Desert Dream

I know we've all seen obscure things in various Amiga/PC demos in the past but I've just been having a sift thru some of my old demos (via UAE) and I came across the classic Kefrens Desert Dream.

I just wanted to know what the hell the melon part was all about when the alien craft fires at the pyramid?

Anyone know the significance here?

I did hear somewhere that it was a reference to or dig at "Melon Dezign" but not 100% sure if that is geniune.

It's to do with Melon Dezign, if you read the text after that part of the demo.

Not to sure on the context though. I'll have to read some more Melon intro texts.

I think the scroller read something along the lines of:

They wanted us to blame the Melon,
But now it's time to turn the hell on.

Didn't make the link to Melon Dezign myself but it would explain a few things.

Oh, and did anyone ever access the SECRET PART part of the demo?

I dunno if my scene memory is starting to fade, but I'm sure there are some former members of Kefrens (the old one with Promax, Metallion, Nightlight, etc) in Melon, and they weren't too keen on the new Kefrens.

Doesn't that sound familiar!!!!!

I *think* to get into the secret part you had to boot the second disk while holding down both mouse buttons. If not, it's something very similar to that!

It's just a checkerboard intro thing with some text in it though.

Don’t ask me where I’ve read it but as far as I recall, some of the Kefrens guys got pissed at Seen/Melon – Probable because of his huge ego/attitude (it’s a know fact). Anyway, Seen and Melon responded to the “Desert Dream” intro with the opening image in the intro “Bodil” (screenshot), showing a melon taking a leak on an ankh.

I don’t know how this “war” ended or if it ever did, but I do know that some of the Kefrens guys turned their anger on to each other. There’s an article in Upstream #10 by Balance (download here) where Laxity (now Polka Brothers) and RWO (now Balance) trash talks each other, quite amusing actually :)

As to reach the mysterious “second hidden part” of Desert Dream I can’t help you, but if you are up to the challenge, you might find RWO’s endscroller in “Galemands ’93 – The revenge of Kuglepølen” interesting. It reads…

Well, it seems like nobody have been able to find the second hidden part in Desert Dream, right?! For the interested phreaks I can reveal, that half of the part is located on DD disk 1, and the other half is located in the minidemo D.A.N.E.

Happy hunting! :)
