how pathetic. i bet they didnt know it wasnt people you shoot until sony told them, and they should be glad of the free publicity, its not like its easy to get people to go to a chruch, but i actually want to go see it and see what kind of job they did on it in the game.
its hardly going to make people want to go in and shoot guns "because theyre allowed"
fucking stupid bastards.

Oh my fucking god. These are the people I hate the most.

It's a fucking game. A FUCKING GAME. You act out a fictional war between humans and alien invaders in an alternate timeline, about 50 years ago. Fucking fuck get a fucking life and go after something else. Fuck your mom or some crap.

Am I the only one a little flustered that the church doesn't understand the fact this game takes place during ww2?

This isn't even taking place in modern day, besides, it's not like your charactrer is the one destroying the church or anything.

its cos they just want someone or somthing to blame. games are an easy target. i dont understand why they dont think the same thing with films it seems a little unfair. it probably stems from them never having played any games.

First off Sony just can't win.

Really they should of just made a fake church. Putting a real church in and not asking permission is just plain stupid and just asking for a backlash.

This just gives something else for anti-videogame movements to bitch about.

Mothers against Violence. Stupidest fucking orginisation I have ever heard of.

That name alone... eurgh.

they insist they sought and were granted permission. the church is hardly a central part of the city like they make it out to be, its just there.

i think sony might win, they have the funding, it will probably mean that they end up giving money to the church.

lets not hope any child with an imagination walks in that place. Heaven forbid they think of fantasy while in those walls.

And Ethan's post concerning this. I agree with him.

QUOTE (Ethan from Ctrl+Alt+Del)
Ok, so if you haven't heard about this Church of England vs Sony thing, here's the basic gist: In the PS3 game Resistance: Fall of Man, the Manchester Cathedral is used as an environment, and you as the player fight some aliens there. With guns, because what else are you going to fight aliens with. The Church of England has now decided they're not too happy with this, and has demanded an apology from Sony, and that the game be removed from store shelves or there may be a lawsuit. Sony claims they believed they had all the necessary permissions to use the cathedral in the game.

Alright, so I'm not going to pretend like I know enough about the laws over in England concerning the duplication of buildings within a digital environment, and what copyright issues are attached to that whole mess. The Church of England may very well have a valid argument. You can't expect a religious body to be happy about a shootout on church grounds, fictional as it may be, and maybe there is some legal clause preventing the imitation of real-world places without permission.

I do think it's a little silly to get upset about events in a video game. I mean, the game is rated M for mature, so what next? Now we're going to start nitpicking what content adults can see? Anyway, I'm sure that if the church made a game about, I don't know, prayer service twenty-four hours a day seven days a week and used my house as a game location, I wouldn't be too thrilled about it. But what's the big deal?

Here's my question, though. Resistance has been out for over six months. The game hasn't changed, it's not like the cathedral was patched in last week. What the hell took them so long? Why bitch about it now? Maybe they only just found out about it? (Update: as someone reminded me, the PS3 was out her in the US before it was out in Europe. So I guess the game has only been out for four months or so over there)

And there's the other thing. How did they find out? I mean, I'm sure they don't have a team of clergy sitting around playing video games all day, sniffing out religious references. So then I imagine it was just some religious player, but then where's the logic there? He's sitting, playing along "Doo-dee-doo, I have no problems with all the guns and blood and violence in this game, and war is great, and -- whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?! They used a real church?! BLASPHEMY!"

The whole thing just seems a bit blown out of proportion to me. I'm sure Sony will apologize, because that's proper PR. But I doubt a lawsuit will occur. This is just a big media show. And Sony certainly won't pull the game from shelves. That would leave the PS3 with what, one other game? ZING! Hehe, I kid, I kid.

Worthwhile read.

EDIT:

And Kotaku's article on the issue, here's on Tony Blair and on the dean of the church.

QUOTE (Kotaku @ Tony Blair article)
The Church of England versus Sony Computer Entertainment battle continues to rage—shame that it can't be resolved with a bit of friendly deathmatch—with British Prime Minister Tony Blair finally weighing in on the important matter.

When asked by Member of Parliament for Manchester Central Tony Lloyd if he agreed Resistance: Fall of Man's choice of location was "not only in bad taste but also very, very insulting to not simply the Church of England, but people across the land who think it's inappropriate that big corporations behave in this way" Blair was inclined to agree. According to a report on the matter from Games Industry, Blair noted:

I've no doubt this debate will go on for a significant period of time, but I do agree. I think it is important that people understand there is a wider social responsibility as well as an interior responsibility for profits.

Oh, snap! Those Brits are ruthless. You can read more of Tony's ice cold opinions on the matter at GI. Let's hope this can all be resolved without calls for smiting.

QUOTE (Kotaku @ church appealing to Japan article)
In an effort to rally around the steeple, the Church of England is asking the people of Japan to protest PS3 exclusive Resistance. The dean of Manchester Cathedral, the Very Rev. Rogers Govender says:

Today I want to appeal directly to the people of Japan to help us put pressure on Sony to respond. So I speak directly to those citizens who share our concerns.

Sure, Sony's headquarters is in Tokyo, but Sony's a mulit-national corporation, and the game was made in America by Americans. What do Japanese people, who aren't typically Christian, have to do with this? Heck, many young non-Christian Japanese couples get married in faux churches by fake priests and wear crucifixes merely because they like the look. Think they honestly care?

The Anglican Church is upset that Manchester Cathedral was used as an shoot out with aliens and giant bugs. Let's forget for a moment, that your in-game goal is to protect Manchester and thus Britain and thus the world with your gunplay. Save humanity? What better place to do that than in a church.
