Title: Chronicles of Asgard project
lusvell - February 9, 2007 08:23 PM (GMT)
This is my 3 month-long project for my Illustration III class. I literally made a game. This is the big step for OTTS, this was one of the main reasons this place was made, to showcase creativity.
In my creation, an action/adventure game, you control Sigurd, a Viking warrior who must battle through the vast lands of Asgard and Midgard .Later in the story, the character’s name changes to Siegfried. The story is based off Scandinavian mythology, though some changes were made, it mostly stays true to the legends. Siegfried fought and slew the evil dragon Fafnir. Not only did he win countless treasure hordes by the dragon, he also bathed himself in the blood of the beast, making his body invulnerable, giving him the reputation of "the Invincible Warrior." However, a falling leaf landed on the back of his heart during this, leaving one spot of his flesh still vulnerable. He becomes a fearsome Viking pirate, who comes to Asgard to steal to Eye of Odin. At this point, the player takes control of the character, and the story goes on.
As far as concept art goes, it’ll probably take around 40, roughly 45 illustrations to perfectly portray what I want the player to see. My process is broken down in four sections: Protagonists, Environments, Antagonists and allies, and Inanimate objects.
I'll posting in this thread concept art every week for the next 3 months. Besides concept art, some elements of the story, and how the game would be played, if it was ever made (It's mostly 360 and PC-controller based)
Hope you guys get interested with it.

Maybe if it's good enough the idea will get taken....
To me it seems very good. I don't think there are much Viking Legend action/adventure games out there(not including Asterix & Obelix), while the vikings are fucking badass...
I'm looking forward ot seeing your game progress
retrohelix - February 11, 2007 02:50 AM (GMT)
oh joy! it's such a good story, i guess it took the superior mind of a god to make that up :P
lusvell - February 11, 2007 05:18 AM (GMT)
haha, yea. Retrohelix thought of the basic storyline. I just took that and made it a bit more complex, added more characters, bosses and stuff.
But Retro deserves writing credits.

ZL-X - February 11, 2007 06:54 AM (GMT)
Go retro's writing credits.
I'm interested in knowing: Is it a side scroller?
lusvell - February 11, 2007 08:12 AM (GMT)
nah. Full 3d action/adventure game. Think Zelda, with Marvel Ultimate Alliance controls, and some button-sequence actions, ala PoP 3, and God of War.
I'll try to convince Pun to make me some 3d renders.

oh jeez! SO, thats why your so wierd about 40 illistrations by May. Wow, didn't realize its a full 3D render. how cool!
BadPixel - February 16, 2007 08:14 PM (GMT)
oooh i love vikings. eer that came out wrong. but yeah it sounds soild, im into all taht norse mythology stuff anyway so a game featuring it would be great. i do want to see your illustrations though if theyre as good as the one i posted a comment to then im thinking they'll be cool. did anyone play rune btw? that was vikingy and based on the ut engine. its a bit old so moves are limited but it was a quality hack and slash at the time. getting a viking broadsword and decapitating warriors was fun. shit ive rambled again.
lusvell - February 17, 2007 06:27 AM (GMT)
^Ah, Rune. Thanks bud, I got a few inspirational things out of that, after searching for it.
Very First official artwork. (or sketch...whatever)
This is Sigurd, the main character. Though, the sword he has right now isnt the one he uses at the beggining, so thats a goof on my behalf. I'll make a final version within the next week or so.
dray - February 17, 2007 02:29 PM (GMT)
Looks a lot like Lusvell.

BadPixel - February 17, 2007 03:50 PM (GMT)

That's what I thought when I saw it!
lusvell - February 17, 2007 06:32 PM (GMT)
haha, I wish XD
Yea, for Feb. 19th, I need to have all the protagonists sketches done. by the 26th, I need to have weapons, armors, and all inanimate shit all sketched. So that sword would most likely be replace by something fancier.

Not like you, as in Leon.
Like you, as in your white-devil self-depiction.
lusvell - February 18, 2007 08:57 AM (GMT)
Anyway, new characters. Thor and Odin. Remember, these are just sketches, the final character illustrations of these and a remaining one will come within two weeks.

Thor shows up throughout most of the storyline, either as your enemy, ally, or just an spectator. Odin is a different story. Reason I didnt do more Odin designs, is because he only really shows up once in full body, the other times, you only really see his head, or just hear his voice.
Thus Spoke Tim - February 18, 2007 02:47 PM (GMT)
Gambitmo - February 18, 2007 06:36 PM (GMT)
Odin is a fucking badass.
Have him eat one of those birds 8D

Looking good man, very good. Oh, hey, If you need voice overs for the game, don't hesitate to ask. :D

last one for the protagonists. I didnt do the other views, cause..i ran out of time. This is Brunhild, a native of Asgard, a soldier, and Siegfried’s love interest. I'm not completly happy with it, so I'll return to it and re-work it a bit for the final.
BadPixel - February 19, 2007 01:31 PM (GMT)
those are all awesome.
my favourite mythological god was loki the trickster, he was a sneaky bastard, he was an advanced shapeshifter, enableing him to be a father and also in one instance a mother.
also tricked hoor blind brother of balder into killing balder. balders wife had made every thin in the worl swera never to har balder, but the only thing that didnt was mistletoe, so when baler was showing his invulnerability he made an arrow of mistletoe and put it in hurs bow, thus making hur kill balder. by shifting shape to a giantess and being the only creature that refused to weep for balder, he made it so that balder could not return from the realm of hel.

lusvell - February 20, 2007 09:16 AM (GMT)
eh...before I move onto weapons and shit, I made a few adjustments to Thor, and possibly will change Brunhild's concept a bit (bigger boobs 8D )
lusvell - February 22, 2007 04:31 AM (GMT)
Alright, quick mini-update. I wasnt really happy with the last few sketches, so I did some quickies today.
ZL-X - February 22, 2007 04:35 AM (GMT)
I see.............CLEAVAGE! ^v^
BlindTaleTeller - February 22, 2007 04:48 AM (GMT)
^_^ awesome Lussy! they look great!
Comparing the two between the original and the mini update.. I think Odin looks better without the birds on his shoulders too :D

Original Sigurd, new Brunhild (bewbs!), New Thor, Old Odin since he was bigger and looked better.
BlindTaleTeller - February 22, 2007 03:40 PM (GMT)
Was sorting out all my RP links in Firefox, came across the historical/mythologic section I use for character creation, inspiration and whatnot.. and thought of you and your project when I hit the Norse section Lussy. Some of the links I had were dead or just straight crap I've had them so long (almost 9 years in some cases lol) and I'm not sure how much you know or have access to when it comes to the Nordic Pantheon or the history.. so while I'm sorting waiting for the bank to open I decided to compile a list of
possibly helpful reference links from the list into wordpad. Hopefully they can be of some use to you bebs!

you should try www.wikipedia.org they have info on absolutley everything, and i know for certain it has a list of all norse gods, and a page for each. just search for any other stuff.
the new sketches look good, i like odin better now he looks mean with his folded arms. they all looks better in that group pic.
P.S AAAY i noticed my little thing has been changed to imperfect perfection. thanks.

Somebody suggested adding a helmet on Brunhild, so here ya go

Helmets, and Sigfried's armor

Weapons #1

Weapons #2

There should be a third weapon sheet, and some other non-weapon stuff coming up before the end of the week.
BlindTaleTeller - February 27, 2007 04:44 PM (GMT)
cool beans :D
she does look good in a helmet... not too sure about the horns on it though ~scratches head~ might be better plain or possibly with wing detail eventually along the brow instead??
the weapons look great ^_^
BadPixel - February 28, 2007 04:50 PM (GMT)
brunhild suits the helmet, it jsut looks a tad big.
also i read that viking weapons also were a status symbol, and they used to encrust them with gems and other stuff, maybe that couild be a feature of the main characters weapons?
i like the horns they make her looka a bit more brutal
BlindTaleTeller - March 1, 2007 04:34 AM (GMT)
yes, they were.. spears were the most common.. swords were usually owned by upperclassmen.. and the more ornate and or detailed, the higher his status of it's owner. further, when a viking/norseman died, his choice weapons were " killed " just before or during his funeral: which usually consisted of him being set into a boat with his prize possessions (including his weapons and, sometimes, his wife/wives and closest servants) and the whole thing set aflame.
" Killing " the weapon, usually consisted of heating the metal of the blade etc and bending it so that it could not be re-used by any other warrior if ever found before it was placed into the boat.. add that to the fire, and sent over a lake/ the sea, and that's why it's so rare to find the weapons in one peice, especially that of a high status norseman. Most sword blades found have been " killed " in a serpentine pattern or " s ".. I used to have a picture of one of the more preserved.. but I think it's somewhere in the folder of dooooom. (meaning it is currently lost among a billion other fricking pics)
I did a lot of personal mythology study from 7th to 12th grade, and I like to add a touch of reality to my RP.. so when I made a set of norse-based vampires.. I studied up. I do that a lot actually, so I'm privy to a lot of otherwise pointless facts and history lol. If you have any questions for reference, let me know. I'll be happy to help.
lusvell - March 30, 2007 06:51 AM (GMT)
Alright...so I've neglected to update this for a while. I admit, I got a bit lazy on it. From now till May, I'd be concentrating a lot on this project.
More weapons:

Quick sketch of one of the enviroments

Second enviroment sketch. In this scene, you get a boat, fight your way till you get here, climb up, grab the artifact, and then have a boss fight with a giant serpent :O

Dorbar, the main boss:

Dorbar, God Warrior Hagen (who's proportions need to be checked >_>) and another God Warrior.

The unnamed God Warrior. This one has some movement/pose issues.

Second unnamed God Warrior. His fighting abilities might reassemble that of a wolf:

they are good. i look forward to seeing the rest of the work, its shaping out well at the moment. i hope your getting good grades for these they deserve it. the guy on the right of the three looks a little like kratos.

I've been meaning to comment. Very nice job so far! I'm liking the whole feel and vibe of it. I sense that there's going to be a background story of political intrigue, am I close?
ALso, Dorbar..the main villain, reminds me of a badguy from Record of the Lodoss War anime(not the OVA). If you haven't watched it, you may want to give it a whirl.
