Jill Dando was a popular UK television presenter with a girl next door image. She was Famously the presenter of Crimewatch, a TV programme which showed unsolved crimes so the public could help by ringing in to give extra evidence to help ongoing police investigations.
This program had some sucess in solving unsolved crimes because it reached a large audience over a huge cross section of the British public.
She also Presented the Holiday programme for many years, which was a travel show. She started her BBC TV work as a news presenter.
At the time of her Murder she was one of the highest profile TV personalities, had been the BBC TV Personality of the year, and she was the covergirl on that week's Radio Times (the weekly UK BBC programme listings magazine for all TV and Radio)
On the 26th of April 1999 around 11.30am she was Executed by being shot in the head at close range on her doorstep.
This killing bore all the hallmarks of a contract killing, and of course crimewatch and the BBC did all it could to try and shed some light on the event by asking the British Public for help.
After six months, the murder investigation team had spoken to more than 2,500 people and taken more than 1,000 statements.
With little progress after a year the police framed a case around local Man Barry George, A man who had several mental problems plus he had epilepsy which some claim would prove that he was incapable of physically holding the muzzle of the pistol to her head and pulling the trigger.
At the time much was made of the lack of evidence, and the contaminated evidence which the police provided from his flat..
To this day, there is a great deal of sceptisism among the british public as to what really happend to Jill Dando.
